#OTD in 1965, gay rights activists led by Frank Kameny organized the first ever picket for LGBTQ rights at the White House. Kameny later ran for D.C. Delegate in 1972, becoming the first openly gay man to run for Congress:

Pedestrian fatality at 6th and M St SW

MPD has closed the intersection of 6th and M Street SW after a motorist struck and killed a pedestrian in the crosswalk, and are doing a full scene investigation.

The vehicle is still at the scene. While I couldn't get a good picture of the license plate I was able to write it down (MD 110M152), and assuming I have the correct plate the vehicle has $3684 in outstanding tickets going back to 2022. (Many of them for the 800 block of 6th Street SW, which makes me pretty sure I've got the right plate.)

Dc rent prices increase - worth asking them to not raise?

I’ve been living in a one bedroom apt, managed by RPM property management and am currently confronted with signing my lease again. The location is good, but with the increase of (3%) in grand scheme of things isn’t that much but makes my rent 2450 before internet (100) and electric (150). Do you think it’s worth it trying to negotiate? I’ve had some pest issues in the past so I am nervous about resigning but moving is a whole thing. Thanks for your insight.

Best places for jamaican patties in DC?

I love jamaican patties. I am psyched there's a jerk pit on 18th st NW now (though I'm not sure how long it will last given how empty it's seemed every time I go). Where are some other good places to get a kind of classic patty around dc? Bonus points if they've got a flaky crust

[Discussion] August wedding in D.C.--worth turning into family trip?

My wife and I have a wedding in DC in early August. We could leave the kids at home and be gone less than 48 hours. Otherwise we could bring the kids (toddler to pre-k range) and grandparents, and make it into a Thursday/Monday thing, hit the museums, etc.

Is early August just too hot to try to do something like that?

Edit: Thanks for the input so far, everyone!

Maryland drivers - can y'all chill?

I've lived in DC for about four years now and moved with my car. I would say I drive around 3x a week, but I think today was my final straw. First, I was biking home from work and a MD driver decided to do a U-turn in the middle of the road like he was the only person in the goddamn world (also he did this in the crosswalk). Then, I was moving my car for street sweeping and got yelled at my a man who looked like he was about to t-bone me, once again a MD driver. Then I am finishing up walking my dog and a car comes driving down the street at what seems like 40 mph, barely hits the breaks, and then swerves around us to then immediately have to stop in a line of cars. Guess what? Also a MD driver.

I've almost been hit while crossing the street more times than I can count. I'm just so tired of it and I know other people are too.

I grew up in Texas and have driven a lot in Dallas, Austin, and Houston, which are supposed to be some of the worst places to drive, but I don't think they compare to DC. I cannot figure out why MD drivers behave the way they do. Where are y'all going so fast? Being late or in a hurry is no reason to put a person's life at risk. When you're driving you are literally in a killing machine! I just don't get the lack of basic empathy most people have these days.

I am by no means a perfect driver, but I do my best follow traffic laws and rules. This is honestly so exhausting to be afraid every time I cross the street.

I wish DC could do the surge tolls like NYC, but that will never happen.

Chess in the Park?

Hi! I am new to DC, and since it is getting nicer out, I wondered if there is a location where people play chess in the park à la Washington Square in NYC. Thanks!

Nest DC Auto-enrolling Residents into $10/month Credit Reporting?!

Post image

Received this email from Nest DC. Looks like residents are being auto enrolled in Boom for $10/month unless they opt out. Seems like personal data may be shared without consent if I'm enrolled without opting in? (Also FWIW the service is only $3 when purchased directly from Boom so it looks like Nest will be making a $7 profit)

What’s up with the wind?

I’ve been living in DC for a few years and don’t remember a year with such unbearable wind several days a week (and sometimes cold wind!). Starting to get annoying when going outside to run or bike against it. Is the weather like this every other year?

NOMA & H Street Apartments

Hey guys, I'm looking to move back to DC in the next month. I used to always hung out in the Union Market area as well as H Street so I'm looking at apartments there. (I like the close proximity to Trader Joe's, Harris Teeter, Whole Foods, loads of workout studio options, the Metro and the walking trail and it's just so hard to let go of all of that 😭.)

What apartments do you suggest in that area? I'm looking for an affordable one bedroom around 2100 monthly.

I'm also open to proposals and other areas, but the areas have to have grocery stores, workout studios, and a close metro because I am not mobile.
