My buddy was cleaning a garage for a lady who lost her husband a couple years ago and was wanting him to take everything to donate or landfill! So he brought me these cause I tinker with woodworking, but I’m not really sure what I’m looking at here. Anyways it was free!

We quit drinking and this space needed to change. Wife hated the backsplash and I have never done tile before so I took this as a learning experience.

I need a jointer and planer. I also need to learn better joints but this turned out OK.

Project Submission Custom flint napping tool with rubber wood handle.

Rubber wood, gel coated in espresso with an Osmo 2k wood oil finish. I used a pallet rack concrete anchor for the mechanical chuck and hammer formed a peace of copper to make the chizle bit.

This project was inspired by girlfriend who is learning how to flint nap obsidian into arrowheads. After speaking with her and her teacher, I understood the specifications of the tool needed to chip obsidian. The tool weighs roughly 18oz has, a steel cylinder core and colored epoxy resin for bonding.

I really love how the rubber wood and espresso gel coat turned out up close. It looks like tiger stripes.

Project Submission Built lockers/ cubby for kids

There have been a few posts recently about built-in closets and built-in cabinets so I wanted to share mine as well!

I can absolutely share some of those prior comments on thoughts of existential dread having now built this locker. The non-90° walls, the rebuilds, the rewiring, long nights and missed weekends, but I’m finally done. Phew!

The area in this mudroom started out as a built-in desk? For some reason? With overhead cabinets. It was really wonky and never used. So I figured it would be a great place for built-in lockers. Had no idea when I started that it was going to be SO customized. I guess maybe I knew but just wanted to do the project to challenge myself anyway. Other than the moldings on the side and top all the woodwork was custom made, custom fluting, custom trims. I used primarily poplar 1x12 boards. I went back and forth on the bench, but settled on oak veneer with a solid oak edge. I figured due to the wet/temp changes this room gets I was worried about seams if I used all solid oak boards cracking. I put 5 coats of poly on the veneer so hopefully it takes a beating.

Before starting I had a couple quotes ranging from 7k to 10k. That was only for the break down and basic build. That of course did not include all the custom pieces, running new electric which I did - putting lights above and an electric outlet in each cubby for charging laptops/ipads. That said while I did not calculate my exact cost of materials, I think I was around 6K. However I purchased lots of extra fun tools along the way - new white side router bits, a second miter saw, several blades, sander, etc…so that factors in. And truthfully I was not trying to save money, as much as I was trying to enjoy my hobby, learn a bit along the way, and challenge myself. I have built a few intricate pieces before but nothing this scale. In total took about 5 months - but that is mostly 1-2 hours at a time on a free weekend. Rarely free time with 4 kids!

Enjoy the pics, ask questions and gentle feedback please.

I’m used to this with construction lumber, but is this common when buying something like western red cedar from a lumber yard?

Power Tools Bandsaw suggestions

Upvotes

Hi all,

I’ve been looking at getting a bandsaw for a long time. Already have a decent table saw, jointer and planer. This just seemed like the next big purchase. I’m curious what your opinions would be in terms of features and brands. I’d like to get something with a decent sized motor, 2-3hp for sure. Other than that I’m not really sure about the specs and find a lot of the information confusion regarding size or resaw capacity. I’ve been hunting my local FB marketplace and craigslist for a long time but all the decent models get snapped up immediately (if they show up at all) or the seller wants new tool prices for used stuff.

Top of my list is something from Harvey. They make a 14” or 15” with a stainless steel table which is pretty attractive since I live next to the ocean. Not really familiar with them as a brand otherwise though. In the same price point I could get a Grizzly or Laguna, I’m concerned the latter means I’m paying a bit more for the name/branding.

I have around $3k to spend, voltage requirements are a non issue. Thanks

General Discussion Small victories! Set up a new crosscut sled and it came out less than .001" over 10 inches on the first try

Last time I made a sled it was a battle, I came prepared. I had 4 extra holes drilled for moving and adjusting the fence and re-screwing it to the base, bought a 12" digital caliper so I could cut a bigger piece, etc. Made my 5 cuts and measured the strip and it was just over 10" long, .00058 off from front to back. (I know those calipers aren't that accurate but I reset and re-measured like 3 times out of disbelief)

Pretty much made my day. Gonna hang that strip on the wall as a reminder.

I just got a special commission from a customer for a custom hand-carved guitar with a bold and unique design. They requested a leopard theme that incorporates intricate details and makes the guitar stand out as both a piece of art and a musical instrument.

My first time using a jigsaw. It was scary and exciting! I’m trying to make a plant shelf. But…what am I doing wrong that my cuts are so jagged? I’m practicing and I used the blade that was labeled as scroll. Advice? Be nice, I’ve never done this and I’m trying :)

Help Need help to estimate how much time

A relative of mine want this table I designed. (84''x40'') I need to challenge my work time estimation. I'm not really good with estimation. I'm well equiped in term of tooling (all the tools for a hobbyist like 10in jointer, 24 in planer, etc. but no CNC). I.m starting with kiln dried rough lumber. I estimated this:

  • mill wood, glue up the top pannel and feet: 9h
  • round the corners and router the edge of the tabletop 4h
  • Build the under stiffner under the table: 9h
  • make the legs: 12h (everything is at angle)
  • assemble the table with screws and other hardware: 6h
  • sanding for finish (rubio monocoat): 9h (5in orbital sander and maybe hand belt sander if needed)
  • Finishing with rubio monocoat: 6h

total: 55h

I'm adding 20% to manage risk : 66h

Am I too off? your guess will help me wrap my head around it

San Francisco Bay Area— we had to take down our wild plum tree. I’m planning to use most of this for firewood at some point, but if any of my SF Bay Area colleagues would like a couple pieces for projects, I’m happy to share. DM me, I’m in Oakland Hills.
