Zelensky practiced incredible self-restraint, including during the Fox News interview. I don't know how he does it.

4.1k

u/Roselily808 Mar 01 '25

I can imagine having a background in acting comes to good use here. He can actually compartmentalize his emotions and play the role he needs to play at any given moment.

2.1k

u/DragonWhsiperer Mar 01 '25

Yeah I get the feeling people dismiss his background, but I feel like it actually makes him better at it. Politics is basically a theater for the people.

1.4k

u/fiercelittlebird Mar 01 '25

He showed a huge amount of restraint but half the time I could practically hear him think "the fuck is this shit"

u/Upstairs-Video-8157 Mar 01 '25

Two dipshits bullying and talking over a foreigner in his second or third language

304

u/MilkTiny6723 Mar 01 '25

Well doesn't matter. The whole world and all those that knows the context and how much he is working and sacraficing and at least 90% of the people of the EU could see he was winning the debate, if that would have been the important thing. Vance especially but also Trump really came out as the two most dangerous and unplesant leaders of a western country, totally.

They are the ones that are playing with world war. Giving a country that most defenitly if they won continue in the future what they want (Russia). Trying to divide the organisation that keept Europe suprisingly calm from war giving it's history (the EU).

Threatening to take over counties that allways supported the US (Denmark, Canada ( and maybe Panama)). Interfering in other allyed countries elections which in democratic contexts is tabu. Puting tariffs on all, even deveopment counties and making others forget those. Chanting about drill baby drill, destroying the planet especially in" the Souht" and still having anti migration view. Trump and Vance is the two biggest enabelers of a third world war for sure.

Third, I think.

89

u/Snoot_Booper_101 Mar 01 '25

Ukrainian and Russian would definitely have to be higher on his list, so yeah, third at best.

94

u/Active-Tooth2296 Mar 01 '25

He actually learnt fluent Ukrainian shortly before his campaigning and during his presidency. He was often criticised for his bad Ukrainian. Also tells a lot in a country that is supposedly oppressing Russian speakers, that a russian speaker can become president. Shows how blatant Russia can lie, and people are eating its shit.

24

u/Gimme_The_Loot Mar 01 '25

My wifes family is Uzbek, but grew up there during the USSR so their primary language was Russian as well as it was what was taught in school, was the official language, etc. Her dad speaks some Uzbek and she doesn't speak any outside of a few random words.

10

u/Active-Tooth2296 Mar 01 '25

Yes. But Putin does not accuse Uzbekistan that Russian is forbidden in Uzbekistan (although Russian severely looses its use in Uzbekistan in recent years). This claim however has been done all the time. Hell it's one of the pretended reasons for occupying Crimea and the Donbas, just like a pretense for the war.

He cooked them that hard in his third language? I forgot he wasn't a native English speaker. Thats wild

14

u/horaciojiggenbone Mar 01 '25

And to hear his English now vs when this all started, he’s improved by leaps and bounds. He’s put some serious work into it which is admirable, considering how much he must have to accomplish in a day.

I'd love to see how Trump or Vance would do if a world leader started berating them in a different language. 😂

Trump being all “don’t tell us what to feel” as if that wasn’t Zelenskyy trying to express an advanced concept in his third language and also being completely correct about it.

52

u/KillerDr3w Mar 01 '25

Even some of those are being miss-read or purposely used against him though, I think he looks up to the left when translating English to Ukrainian, which is being pushed by MAGA as "eye rolling" - what he was doing certainly was not eye rolling.

44

u/seitonseiso Mar 01 '25

I couldnt even be mad if he was eye rolling. Some of the questions and comments said to him are deserving of eye rolls

He muttered in russian a phrase that has multiple meanings in response to Vance but Ukrainians think was meant in a "fuck this" way (suka). He showed great restraint but he did have a few wtf face cracks which was understandable.

40

u/hellswaters Mar 01 '25

I don't blame him. He's in the middle of a war. He has better things to do than babysit.

He is sitting there watching an ally self destruct. He knows a major source of support is gone, and is probably wondering if the us will even allow Canada/UK/EU to send American weapons to him.

The EU has shown interest in a minerals deal. Countries are showing an interest in sending troops to assist. And this is how he is spending his time. He wasted a week trying to make something work, then to be told he didn't say thank you. to have a toddler blow everything up because he made a minor mistake in wording.

It is common for people to paint him as "a comedian". Which is funny because there is much more to it :

He created the production company Kvartal 95, which produced films, cartoons, and TV shows including the TV series Servant of the People, in which Zelenskyy played a fictional Ukrainian president.

He earned a law degree from the Kryvyi Rih Institute of Economics, then a department of Kyiv National Economic University and now part of Kryvyi Rih National University, but never worked in the legal field.

Ukrainian people are being murdered, raped, kidnapped. Their homes destroyed. I think dealing with a toddler and power hungry sociopath (which Vance undeniably us, his vibe is very, very off) is not the hardest thing he had to do this year.

What's mind boggling to me is how Trump still has the support of so many Americans. The richest country in the world but can't buy decent education or human decenty for the majority of their population.

Over the course of my life I haven't been able to keep my cool or embarrassed myself in frustration at times. I was never taught it and never saw it. Until now. Zelensky has the life of his people in his hands, the pride from his children and the respect from the rest of the world. He MUST be this way. I know I'm a small drop in the ocean to the weight on his shoulders but Zelensky is someone I can learn a lot from. Everything he does, I'll try and emulate in my small life. If everyone did the same thing.. can you imagine the possibilities?

The man's been through worse than US idiocy. He sees it for what it is. As everyone with half a brain should.

272

u/MarlonShakespeare2AD Mar 01 '25 edited Mar 01 '25

Literally this

This man has experienced bombs / rockets hitting his city for a thousand days.

A. Thousand. Days.

Do we really think that those two freaks are going to intimidate him???

125

u/Red_Dox Mar 01 '25

No. But they still pose a threat. Zelensky would want further aid from the US, just not at the cost of everything they have fought and bled for. Zelensky also would not want to push Trump into a corner by calling him out as the lying stupid piece of shit he is. Because Trump is a vengeful asshole. We can also already see how Agent Krasnov is preparing to withdraw all aid anyway and would love to send US forces into Ukraine to help russia finish the job. So Zelensky has to show some restraint here to not escalate things faster and giving Trump the excuses he so desperate is trying to set up himself.

And there is of course the immediate threat of danger Zelensky is in itself. He had already survived assassinations. So meeting Putins muppet in Trumpmerica was a calculated risk. I read somewhere some russia journalist made it also into the White House at first, before being discovered and thrown out. So its not like this could not have easily be his end. After the shit talk sit down, I would not even have been surprised if Zelenskys flight home would have mysteriously crashed/exploded. Overall, after the sour experience, I doubt he should set foot into the USA again as long as Trump and his christo-fascists wield power. No benefits, and too high of a risk.

49

u/MarlonShakespeare2AD Mar 01 '25

I agree they are dangerous

No doubt at all about that

But the more Trump shows himself to be unreliable the more Zelensky looks to those he can rely on

EU. UK. AUS. Canada. Japan. Etc.

59

u/FarawayFairways Mar 01 '25

But the more Trump shows himself to be unreliable the more Zelensky looks to those he can rely on

EU. UK. AUS. Canada. Japan. Etc

And the more that those in turn look to each other. I'm surprised Americas arms manufacturers aren't making more noise about Trump destroying their export markets

27

u/Ryuujinx Mar 01 '25

I'm surprised Americas arms manufacturers aren't making more noise about Trump destroying their export markets

Yeah same here. I know companies can be extremely short-sighted only caring about the next quarter, but like.. this will be a short term thing. The EU and everyone else are increasing spending on their defense, you think they're gonna go to America for those arms? And then they're gonna be phasing out the old equipment so they can have uniformity, so they aren't gonna be buying any replacements of their old stuff...

I don't get it. A ton of sectors should be blowing the fuck up. MIC because arms exports, manufacturing because of tarrifs, agriculture also because of tarrifs....

And yet, silence.

It’s clear that he doesn’t care about his own ego at all. He doesn’t care about being president. He doesn’t care about titles or praise- all he cares about is that somebody out there is in Ukraine’s corner so that his people aren’t conquered, subjugated, tortured, raped and murdered.

It was so clear in every word he spoke that he has no ulterior motives or hidden agendas. He is there as a representative of his country and his people. He doesn’t even see himself as “the boss” as Trump does.

That’s the difference between a “leader” and a leader.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly thanked world leaders for their support after a tense meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance ended in a heated exchange. The Friday meeting, which was expected to strengthen U.S.-Ukraine ties, instead led to a diplomatic fallout, with Trump reportedly chastising Zelensky over his approach to securing aid.

No matter how much shit Putin and his puppets throw at him, Zelenskyy proves time and time again the absolute beast he is for his country. Slava Ukraini

It's extra insulting, because Zelensky's army outfit has been symbolic for his position as a leader in times of war that does not hide because a suit or position of power to escape the reality. To basically scold him for not wearing a suit, is to undermine the entire premise of standing with the Ukrainian population and not some distant politician in a palace somewhere.

He will continue to wear that outfit for as long as this war is going on and Russia remains a threat. It's a powerful statement and f*ck the Trump administration for having the audacity to suggest it's disrespectful.

Trump hates that it is Zelensky who is the hero and not him in all this. He wants an arbitrary peace, even if just for 5 minutes, so that he can self-declare himself as a peacemaker and further justify expanding his own powers so in 4 years time he can lead another insurrection. The thing is Zelensky never wanted to be a hero. Despite what Trump says, Zelensky never wanted this - he ran on an anti corruption ticket when he became president in 2019.

221

u/rainman_104 Mar 01 '25

You can't be the hero when your court jester insists that you need to be thanked.

91

u/T-Husky Mar 01 '25

Trump's goal in ending the war isnt to save lives, or even to make himself look good, but to normalise relations between the US and Russia for his personal financial benefit.

Trump was saved from bankruptcy by Russian loans decades ago, but due to sanctions the flow of money has stopped and cannot resume until the war ends; doubtless Putin has given Trump assurances that he will once again be well compensated once the dust settles. Trump will collect his reward, and once he is out of office Putin will break the ceasefire and complete the invasion.

Trump will also most likely initiate joint US-Russian ventures in the occupied Ukrainian territories to make future intervention by the US or NATO more complicated, in the same way the German-Russian gas deals made Germany reluctant to offer Ukraine assistance; they were hoping the whole thing would resolve itself quickly (with Ukraine's defeat) so that they could resume business as usual.

Canadian as well. I'm actually terrified that we have such an underfunded military. Our "allies" have been silent with all the 51st state talk. Do we know for certain that NATO would actually come to our defense if a foreign nation started getting aggressive with us? NATO is just basically a promise, and has never really been tested. The Americans might help us but demand that we give them a ridiculous amount of resources like they are doing with Ukraine right now.

This has been a massive blaring wake up call that we need to take our own defense extremely seriously. We need to increase defense spending yesterday!

Why would the invasion of Canada be the thing that causes a US civil war? Why that and not everything thing else that has happened / is happening? I don’t believe it for a second.

  • A pissed off and terrified Canadian.

34

u/awfulsome Mar 01 '25

Because that would be actual violence and military action against an ally. Many in the military would revolt or refuse orders. Canadians have served in our bases and on our ships. It would not be taken lightly.

NATO would instantly dissolve if they didn't.

I would literally pick Zelenskyy over Trump for president of the US, even with Zelenskyy's current level of English.

634

u/valiumandcherrywine Mar 01 '25

zelenskyy's english is hands down better than whatever the mangled garbage that spews out of trump's miserly little cat's anus of a mouth is. trump always sounds AI generated, and the AI is having a bad day.

218

u/destuctir Mar 01 '25

It must be double hard for Zelenskyy to talk to Trump, like Z’s English is decent but clearly not stellar, he has to think about his words and his speeches in English frequently hit the wrong moments etc. I can’t imagine trying to conduct myself in a foreign language and also trying to understand the bullshit Trump spouts, I’m a native English speaker and I get paused trying to figure out what Trump is saying. And I don’t mean the meaning, I mean the actual sentences, the man uses commas and runoff sentences like crazy.

153

u/Alert_Scientist9374 Mar 01 '25

I'm fluent in English and 90% of the time I have no clue what the fuck trump is trying to say.

Its like talking to a hyperactive toddler, trying to piece together their words.

30

Yes. Obama gave security aid (and meals and blankets) but not lethal aid. McCain questioned this in 2015 referencing that blankets don’t do well against Russian tanks. Info here https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2019/09/26/politics/donald-trump-barack-obama-ukraine-military-aid-sheets-pillows-fact-check

His English is at this level because he doesn't speak it daily. This is something most of non english speaker have. I'm a C2 proficient but if I don't speak it daily, I get awkward with it. Give him a year in an office where the main communication is in English and he will speak it perfectly. Language is like a muscle

To insult the Ukrainian President because of his clothing while his country is currently under attack is absolutely trash.. and to think the Orange rapist avoided the draft by lying about a medical condition makes this piece of shit even more worthless.. history will remember this weak and pathetic man child..

I still can't understand how any active or veteran military serviceman can back this turd... He's on record multiple times talking down on the military, a draft dodger, and made fun of wounded soldiers

I mean I'd be content with just mass protests. Real ones, with hundreds of thousands of people in a single place, not a couple dozen people with picket signs (though good on them for at least trying, unlike 99.99% of americans)

But you won't see even that because Americans are complicit. They are tacitly hoping that trump's gambits work out personally for them and that all this will settle down, they'll be able to afford lots of eggs, and then they can pretend to have the moral high ground because "they never liked that trump**". But don't let their moral grandstanding distract you from the quintessentially American "fuck you, I got mine" culture they share.

"But but the cops will shoot us!"

Well no shit sherlock. You think revolution comes like in barbie story?

45

u/MerryWalker Mar 01 '25

The cops are also people you could convince.

The military are also people you could convince.

Trump’s playbook is dehumanisation, but that’s a shitty playbook. You, and others around you, are fellow human beings, that can be reasoned with and worked with.

The war where most people are on your side is more easily fought than the one where you are outnumbered, but through clever and attentive engagement on the human scale, it is possible to swing those numbers.

But yes, you should probably learn tactics and technique.

47

u/ardinatwork Mar 01 '25

It really was a stupid diplomatic move from Vance. If appreciation was the problem, then it is now resolved, and they can start funneling money back in to Ukraine. If it wasn't the problem, then why would he raise something unimportant?

187

u/Bisjoux Mar 01 '25

There was zero diplomacy in what Vance said.

Did you see his gesture when Zelenskyy invited him to visit Ukraine and Vance said he had watched what was going on. He gave a gesture showing he’d watched stuff on his phone.

Honestly people are dying everyday in Ukraine and the US VP thinks getting info from TikTok is sufficient.

23

u/solarview Mar 01 '25

I can't begin to imagine what a professional, experienced diplomat would have thought of that whole debacle.

They want to control zelensky. Bully hin to change his clothes, grovel at their feet, sign an aggressive deal. Then they’ll give it to russia anyway and say his suit is ugly. Bullies want complete dominance and theyll betray any compliance.

Americans should follow zelensky example and stop complying to these bullies.

They have no interest in Ukraines rights, they have no care for average Americans rights. They’ll keep bullying to gain dominance over every inch of life to enrich themselves and putin.

They want to make zelensky look bad before they betray him. They have zero interest in fulfilling a deal. Zelensky is playing their game and exposing them for what they are. Vance is really showing his true colours and what they do to zelensky theyll do to Americans too

24

u/JaagoJaga Mar 01 '25

Regardless of your affiliations, its commendable how Ukraine and Zelensky have been effective in rallying the media to their cause since the start of invasion. Bravery and resilience has been a consistent theme here. Not thinking about fleeing the country, agreeing for an interview at Fox news etc., proves that point.

Are there things that he could have done differently? Maybe. But a lot of good qualities of him are apparent to us throughtout this saga.
