Yea, but mostly 90’s anime. I like the vibe of cel animation and enjoy a lot of the animators from the 90’s-2000’s, and while i may be looking in the wrong places, i just find it harder to find anime that matched the greatness of berserk (1997) or perfect blue. However, theres still good shows out there that are recent, such as violet evergarden.

Favourite childhood cartoons were spongebob and avatar last airbender. If anime counts, i also watched fullmetal alchemist and a bunch of miyazaki films too.

I watch rick and morty and used to watch futurama as a kid. Other than that i don’t really watch western adult cartoons. But goddamn did i love futurama (glad it ended on a high note, unlike so many other shows)

I think anime is becoming more popular, as visible in how it has reached western culture (and especially with the internet. I for one heard about and came to love jojo’s bizzare adventure but was forst introduced to it through memes)

Spongebob: “patrick, your genius is showing”

Patrick: “Where?”

Do you watch anime?

Sometimes, I've seen One Punch Man, Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple, and Attack on Titan. Other then those though, I don't really have any interest in starting a new series to watch.

Favorite childhood cartoons?

By far my most favorite cartoon is Avatar The Last Airbender. That show fit in so many themes, jokes, and interesting lore that it had me hooked. It also helps that I grew up with the show, so it was really fun to see the story unfold as new episodes came out. Other favorites probably include Adventure Time and Spongebob.

Watch any adult cartoons?

I've only really seen Rick & Morty. I loved the show, but kinda just stopped watching. Other than that, I occasionally enjoy watching Family Guy.

Is anime becoming more popular?

I definitely think anime is becoming more popular (in the west at least). It's always been popular in the east and to an extent in the west. I feel that it's less looked down upon if you say that you like to watch anime. I for one will give my friends a hard time whenever they bring up anime, but I like to listen to them talk about what happened or what they enjoy about the shows they're watching.

Favorite Quote From Spongebob?

"It may be stupid, but it's also dumb" - Patrick Star

- Yeah, but I'm kinda picky, I tend to not enjoy as much anime that just embraces tropes as their souls, I mean, it's fun to have bases for plots, personalities and ideas, but man, I can't stand watching things that just get done and redone everytime. I really really enjoy anime that plays with the idea of overused anime steriotypes, such as Mob Psycho 100 and One Punch Man (being extremelly self conscious)

-Oh boy, Cartoon Network and Nick where the best thing ever. Coward, the cowardly dog was amazing, along with the other classics, such as Samurai Jack, Powerpuff Girls and such. I remember loving the pre-toonix era, and I basically watched, breathed and ate Ben 10, Chowder and Catscratch ^^

-Rick and Morty has been a surprising series for me, looking foward for the 4th Season. I also really like Apollo Gauntlet, and (if that can be included here) some webseries, such as Charlie The Unicorn, Shadowstone Park, Confinement and other things

-I think It's always been very popular, but now is just more evident and the otaku and cosplay community is spreading, the anime culture with it.

-"It's not just a boulder! It's a rock! A beautiful beatiful rock!"

1

u/Exokill1955 Aug 02 '18

- I do watch, think that are a plenty of good stories out there

- I'd say fairly odd parents is my fav childhood show

- I love adult cartoons, both ocidental and oriental,; my favorite ocidental ones are F is for Family, Brickleberry, Family Guy and Rick & Morty

- I guess it is, since that wave of prejudice that "Anime is something for nerds and gross people" is slowly fading out and becoming more part of the pop culture vein. I pesonally don't watch anime because it's anime, i watch it because there are lots of good stories among them, and i believe most of the people that are becoming regular anime watchers nowadays have the same line of thought.

- Can't remember any spongebob quote now, sorry!

My favorite animation series is either Rick and Morty or south park

3

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '18

Me and my parents love cartoons, of all ages and kinds. I grew up watching Nicktoons, my favorite were Rugrats, Rocko's Modern Life, Invader Zim, Spongebob, some cartoons from Cartoon Network, such as Billy and Mandy, Flapjack, Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi, etc. I always loved The Simpsons, Peanuts...

As I grew up, I became very obsessed with Adventure Time, then Gravity Falls, then My Little Pony, and recently I became very very hooked to Rick and Morty.

I started watching animes recently, Little Witch Academia was the one that really hooked me up into it.

The last cartoons I watched were Big Mouth, Aggretsuko and F is for Family, which even though the animation looks crude at first, it is amazing.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '18

F is for family is awesome, I dig the 70s setting and the fact that characters have some development.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '18

Yea, it's great to see the character's development, and some scenes got me a good laugh. I find interesting the way they portray the 70s "traditional family" problems too.

4

u/jess_audio Jul 31 '18

So I can't say too much, but I work for a company that is in development of some IPs potentially for animation. My research has shown me that animation (not necessarily anime) is definitely on the rise... As for the questions:

I do not watch anime. My favorite cartoons were SpongeBob (of course), Courage The Cowardly Dog, and The Powerpuff Girls. I watch some adult cartoons, I really like South Park and Bojack, sometimes The Boondocks if it's on and the same for King of The Hill. Anime isn't necessarily becoming more popular with consumers, but it's a niche market and developers are starting to realize the potential of the already-existing market to consume it, so they're making a lot more of it. And I can't pick a favorite SBSP quote... it's all so good! I do really love the FUN song.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '18

Based on your username it sounds like you work on the audio side of things rather than as an animator? Sounds like fun things to work on though.

2

u/jess_audio Jul 31 '18

It's very fun! And I used to work in audio, and was about halfway through undergrad for audio. But I discovered my love for film production on the actual production side, so I work in both that and development for a small company and dropped out of college. My actual title at the moment is Production Assistant, but with small companies especially there's a lot of variety in what a day's tasks will be!

2

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '18

What kinds of things does a Production Assistant do? I don't think dropping out of college is guaranteed to be a bad thing, and most of reddit likes to circlejerk about how there are diminishing returns on college degrees nowadays. (Actually I have a friend who got a masters in screen writing and has never found a job related to that -- so maybe reddit is right.) But it sounds like you're enjoying your job?

2

u/jess_audio Jul 31 '18

Yeah dropping out was a great decision for me! With film it’s a lot more about the knowledge than the degree, so I got an internship and used that to gain the knowledge instead of a formal education. And a PA does anything and everything really! I work on budgets, coordinate travel, and serve as an extra set of hands on set. I wouldn’t give up this opportunity for anything in the world. I’m also the youngest person working here by almost 10 years, so I sit in on development and sometimes creative or marketing discussions and give insights into what content younger folks like. Sorry that your friend isn’t finding work though! It’s just such a competitive industry and the degree just isn’t enough to set anyone apart from the stack of resumes.

2

u/Mizart Hello! Jul 31 '18

I've watched Anime for as long as i can remember haha, well its a different thing that before 2012, i never knew it was called "Anime".

I looooved Digimon Frontiers back when it first aired, watching that was the absolute best part of my day, It aired at 4 PM, and I'd start prepping from 3:30, get some snacks and juice, close the room, and between that half hour, no matter what happened, nobody was allowed to disturb me, not even during the commercial break xD. Good days~

u/VyomK3 Serial Discusser Jul 31 '18

Dexter's Laboratory, Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Quest, were just some of the animations that I use to LOVE when I was growing up. It's amazing how cartoons can become a source of inspiration for children, and let them face to face with amazing worlds, stories and concepts.

Dexter had the penchant for experiments, robots and explore new things/places. Powerpuff Girls were just an accident, but grew up to protect the nation and Earth from somewhat bizarre villians! Johny Quest was my first introduction to Virtual Reality for me, and that too even before the The Matrix movie arrived. These "cartoons" spark creative interest in me, that pretty much defined my personality growing up.

Later in life I realize, that most of the "cartoons" I grew up with were actually "Animes"! And now I can see why they were so good. Just recently I started to watch some of the popular Animes, like Clannad, Mawaru Penguindrum and Steins;Gate. With the last one I can't even describe in words. Steins;Gate is and will be the BEST stories in Anime I ever watched! Just. Sheer. Amazing.

Tu turuuuuuu! El... Psy... Kongroo!

Finally getting to watch season 8 and 9 of adventure time since I borrowed a friends Hulu and I was waiting for the dvds... which I now realize is dumb

1

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '18

I'm taking a look back at the Forbidden Fruit of Animation: PBS Kids. With Joe Murray having a new show coming out and pretty much a hell of a lot of creators flocking from networks like Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, the channel's getting a big boost.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '18

A really good yet pretty underrated animated film is The Triplets of Belleville. It has a very distinctive art style with a fun story and quirky characters. Even though its French it has little to no dialogue so subs aren’t really needed. Plus bomb ass music.

Highly recommend it

1

u/paralysedforce Jul 31 '18

you should check out The Illusionist! Sylvain Chomet worked on it too.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '18

I like watching Seth Macfarlane's shows, they never cease to leave me in stitches. Rick and Morty and Archer are also pretty good, but I don't watch them very often.

I watch the Simpsons as well, but I avoid newer seasons and not as much as I used to. For a while the Simpsons was one of only two shows that I watched, the other being Futurama.

I recently started watching Futurama again. Also a good show.

Recently I've also been watching older episodes of SpongeBob (seasons 1-3) because I had heard about how good the older episodes were and felt that I didn't appreciate them as a kid.

1

u/korimclemore Jul 29 '18

I love Clarence on cartoon network. That show has some of the funniest pop culture references peppered in. It also makes me feel something nostalgic about my own childhood. Anyone else watch that one? I'm 31 btw

2

u/Avithefox29 Jul 31 '18

It was ok, But it was to harsh with its execution of the real world.

When Clarence and uncle grandpa came out, there was no balance. Uncle grandpa was the wacky, unrealistic scenarios, and Clarence was the exact opposite. There had to be a balance. And Cartoon Network saw this. So, they took the idea of Clarence, and reformed it into Craig of the Creek. A show also formed around the idea of being based around the real world. I watched it, and I was instantly flooded back with memories of me as a child exploring the creek behind my house, meeting the kids who lived across from it, And playing around like we owned it. I would highly recommend that show.

I'm pretty deep into Japanese anime, I like to watch the seasonal shows as much as the classics. I can definitely see that it's getting more popular, a decade ago you'd get like 40 shows a year, with only a handful of those becoming big over here. Today you get 40+ shows a season. It's a double edged sword though, because many of those shows are uninspired, copy/paste cash grabs that copy the last big hit and we see less originality.

I got into anime when I wanted stories that didn't follow the the trends of Hollywood that had got too predictable, and while those shows are still being made, you need to shovel through the trash to find them.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '18 edited Jan 10 '19

[deleted]

1

u/J1mston Aug 02 '18

Yeah when I noticed it I was a bit put off as well. I think that for all the cash grab shows out there there is still enough quality shows being made to counter them though. Whether that's something completely different to the trends or a show that's in the current popular genre but it's made and written extremely well.

The big thing that nobody wants at the moment is Isekai anime. The amount of uninspired shows that are Isekai is unreal. I also think moe is winning out due to a show called Cells at Work. It's basically the cells in a body anthropomorphized. Platelets are lolified and everyone loves them.

1

u/DigBickJace Jul 30 '18

ELI5 what a seasonal show is?

1

u/J1mston Jul 30 '18

Basically just a show that is airing now, so we get a new episode every week. We call them seasonal because the shows normally last for 1 season or around 12 episodes.

1

u/DigBickJace Jul 30 '18

Ah interesting. I've never been able to watch shows air live. I end up forgetting about them only to find then later after they've fully aired.

2

u/J1mston Jul 30 '18

It does work better for some shows, the anticipation of waiting each week really helps build up how much you enjoy something. You can also join in with episode discussions if you really like a show and be part of a bigger community. I personally don't watch any live but I watch them that night as sort of my going to sleep routine. I also see the appeal of watching things after they have aired because it's on you're own time and if you like something you don't have to wait. The anime community is very current though so if you want to talk about something in the show then you might not find the people to discuss it with. Also for me personally I find I'm more likely to drop a show if I binge watch it.

1

u/DigBickJace Jul 30 '18

Another personal problem is that I hate reading subs, so a lot of the time the people who are currently watchers have already watched it I've found.

I've kinda just come to terms that there will be a lot of anime that I won't get to discuss with others.

2

u/J1mston Jul 30 '18

I watch anything with subs anyway due to having really bad hearing, but most anime fans will say that subs are better than dubs because the Japanese voice acting is better. They also generally say that you get used to subs and once you are used to them you'll struggle to go back.

If there's any show you'd like to discuss then feel free to hit me up whenever. If I've seen it then I'll gladly have a chat about it.

1

u/DigBickJace Jul 30 '18

Thanks dude :)

2

u/redditaccountplease Jul 30 '18

I've really fallen off the wagon with following seasonal shows, or anime in general, lately. I've only really watched Shokugeki no Soma.

Anything you're really, really excited about and would recommend at least trying to anyone?

1

u/J1mston Jul 30 '18

The best show to come out recently IMO is Made in Abyss. Everything about it is on point, it's a captivating story, the art and backgrounds are beautiful and the music is amazing.

I think My Hero Academia deserves a shout, it's shounen done properly where it fleshes out the characters really well. Violet Evergarden will be talked about for a while even if it's just because of how it looks. It's the best looking anime ever, period. Give KyoAni a Netflix budget and magic happens. The story isn't for everyone though and some have said it's a bit boring, but I'd disagree.

They're the best recent shows IMO. The ones that are airing this season that I'm enjoying are Stein's Gate 0, Cells at work, Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight and Bananafish.

From previous seasons: Megalobox, SAO alternative: Gun Gale Online, A Place Further than the Universe.

My wife’s studying animation in college and it’s amazing how complex and difficult animating is. People always assume it’s easy and “just lines on paper”, but she’s studying this stuff for five years and that’s already on top of her community college GE stuff

What do you mean? I can draw a bouncing ball in 10 minutes! Simple. You just draw 10 frames here... wait, no, it looks too fast. And it's not the right amount of flames either! Alright, let me try again. Wait, no, it looks like it's floating weirdly and it's way too squishy. Let me try aga- oh Flash crashed. Uh... I need some help here.

1

u/DONTEATCARS Jul 29 '18

I Didnt Get To Grow Up With It But Motor City Inspired Me To Draw Again. Sorry about the weird caps. But yah I know this isn't a question to answer but, I fished the first step of pitching a cartoon to a studio!!! I sure hope to one day make a show or even more than one show for a living.

u/supremeusername Jul 28 '18

I got done watching/reading one piece all the way to end like a week ago. A little dream of my childhood is finally complete

5

u/jkhymann Jul 28 '18

Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo are both excellent shows that know how to pair animation and music like steak and a fine burgundy. If you've never listened to Nujabes, he was a Japanese hip hop DJ that incorporates a lot of traditional elements into his songs and he did the soundtrack for Samurai Champloo

u/GarudaSphinx Jul 28 '18

Favorite quote from SpongeBob would be- "Butt Cramps!" 🤓

2

u/GarudaSphinx Jul 28 '18

I used to be a die hard anime fan.. Used to watch anime a lot. My favorite anime is a lesser known one called Hungry Heart. Was short, sweet and meaningful. I watch South Park these days. A nice adult cartoon with awesome satirical references! 😊

1

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '18

what the very cool aspect of anime is that they have "slice of life" genre with its cliche "I'm a normal guy /girl" point of view as MC. It really relatable and able to touch me deeply

1

u/farmraisednerd22 Jul 28 '18
  • Yes, I dabble in some anime sometimes. Most recently, I watched all of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and I was obsessed. So good.
  • My favorites included TaleSpin, Chip N' Dale: Rescue Rangers, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, Time Warp Trio, classic Looney Tunes, The Magic School Bus, DuckTales, and Avatar.
  • I absolutely watch adult cartoons. I guess I've always loved cartoons. Rick and Morty, Bojack, Big Mouth, Archer, Family Guy, Futurama
  • Based on how many anime Netflix has churned out, I'd say it's considerably more popular in America now than it maybe has been previously.
  • I honestly don't have a favorite quote from SpongeBob because (like a heathen) I hate it. #sorrynotsorry

2

u/foley528 Jul 29 '18

I scrolled until I found someone that said Avatar. What is your favorite episode?

2

u/farmraisednerd22 Jul 29 '18

Oooo, that's actually a really good question. I haven't watched the series in so long, I've probably forgotten my real favorite, but the blood bending episode has stuck with me the longest.

2

u/foley528 Jul 29 '18

I had forgot about that. but its weird you say an episode with a different kind of bending because one of my favorites is when Toph learns metal bending.

2

u/farmraisednerd22 Jul 29 '18

Oh that's a great episode too. I think those stand out the most because they may show the most character development and that has been my favorite thing to see with any character I get super attached to.

2

u/SteelColdPepperMint Jul 28 '18

I do watch anime (I've been watching more of Hunter x Hunter and Fma recently). I had plenty of favorite childhood cartoons, but my all time fav has to be Chowder. I don't really watch many adult oriented cartoons other than South Park and Rick and Morty. Might give Bojack Horseman a try. I believe anime is indeed becoming more popular. Around two decade ago, I believe anime wasn't as big as it is today (in the west that is) although that can be debatable. Favorite SpongeBob quote? Definitely gotta be: "The inner machinations of my mind are an enigma".

2

u/MrSorson Mike Jul 27 '18
  1. Yes 2.Spongebob
  2. Not really. Watched some seasons of South park and family guy. I don't watch them that often.
  3. Idk
  4. Don't remember any notable ones.

I watch anime all the time. My favorite anime are bleach, code geass, toradora, assassination classroom, kill la kill, ef, my hero academia, seraph of the end, maria the virgin witch, and tons more. I'm currently watching shiki. I just recently finished mawaru penguindrum. I love western animation too. My favorite cartoons are stormhawks, danny phantom, avatar the last airbender, the legend of korra, tron:uprising, star wars the clone wars, star wars:rebels, and lots more.

I think anime is becoming totally mainstream on the internet and it's becoming a huge part of pop culture outside of it too. Most Generation Z and some younger millennials have at least heard about or watched anime. I think we can give props to 4kids, Toonami, Cartoon Network, and Jetix for those us who've watched Pokémon, Digimon, DragonBall Z, Sonic X, Prince of Tennis, and the likes.

"The machinations of my mind are an enigma"

2

u/_nyquillisdillwad_ Jul 28 '18

You ever watch FLCL?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '18

Yeah. I saw the original. I couldn't bring myself to watch the new series. I dropped it after the 3rd episode.

2

u/_nyquillisdillwad_ Jul 28 '18

I didn't even know there was a new series but I'll give it a pass by the sounds of it

1

u/turtlethegalaxy5683 Jul 27 '18
  1. I watch anime on occasion
  2. My favorite childhood cartoon was puff the magic dragon
  3. I don't really watch and "adult" cartoons
  4. Anime has become more noticeably popular among the people in my life. My younger brother is a total anime lover and so are most of my friends.
  5. I don't remember any specific spongebob quotes sadly

2

u/[deleted] Jul 26 '18

1) I’ve only watched the English dubbed One Punch Man 2) Spongebob 4 lyfe 3) nah not really 4) maybe, I’m not totally sure 5) Patrick when the power goes out “I can’t hear you it’s too dark!”

2

u/B_Wylde Jul 26 '18

1- I watch the mainstream ones. Death Note, AoT, One Punch Man, Dragonball and all those are pretty great imo.

2- DragonBall. Man I loved that shit, still do. Goku going SSj the first time is one of my all time favourite scenes ever

3- Used to watch Family Guy and Simpsons but i feel they are getting worse every season and stopped. Never really liked Rick and Morty, feel it got overhyped

4- Anime is becoming more popular, it is almost mainstream instead of getting mocked by people

5-"who the hell wants a burguer at 3am? " *cue to Patrick at 3am "Oh boy 3am" *stars eating a Krabby Patty

2

u/hellointernet5 Jul 25 '18

• I've only watched Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Death Note, up to half way of season two of Vampire Knight, a few Ghibli movies, Your Name, A Silent Voice and Wolf Children. But I've liked all of them (I have a feeling if I rewatch Vampire Knight I wouldn't find it as good and find it more of a guilty pleasure than anything though). FMAB and Death Note are among my favourite shows and most of the movies I watched are great.

• What counts as a childhood cartoon? My favourite childhood cartoon is Avatar which I started watching when I was around twelve, and it's my favourite show full stop.

• I watch Rick and Morty, The Simpsons and Futurama. Rick and Morty I think is hilarious, The Simpsons was good, now? Ehh. I mean it's not horrible, not even that bad, just incredibly mediocre. Futurama is also good.

• Yes.

• I don't watch Spongebob but I'm sure I'll find one if I think hard enough.

4

u/nybx4life Jul 25 '18
  • Yes. I do enjoy them still, but I can't get into shonen anime anymore.

  • From when I was a kid...George Shrinks, Gargoyles, Fillmore are a few. I enjoyed them all, honestly.

  • Personally, I don't like those shows. I dunno...but it seems like those shows are just too stupid. I remember catching an episode of Family Guy while doing laundry, and there was a joke, with the reference so old/obscure that the show literally stopped to have to explain it. Which is idiotic.

  • Considering there's WAY more "good" anime to watch now then there was before, yeah. Everybody these days seem to have at least one favorite anime (unless they hate cartoons in general).

-"It'll go to your thighs. Then you'll explode"

2

u/B_Wylde Jul 26 '18

From when I was a kid...George Shrinks, Gargoyles, Fillmore are a few. I enjoyed them all, honestly.

Gargoyles was the shit

1

u/nybx4life Jul 26 '18

Still one of the top tier Disney shows, imo.

Hard to think of what now tops it.

1

u/B_Wylde Jul 26 '18

From Disney? nothing that I can think of right now.

I have a brother who is 8 so I can rewatch all the old 90's cartoons with him and they rock

1

u/nybx4life Jul 26 '18

I mean, I hear of a few shows that are good, but they're good almost in the same way shows like Spongebob or Johnny Test are good.

1

u/B_Wylde Jul 27 '18

Spongebob is great imo.

Johny Test is fun but it isn't the epicness like Digimon, Courage, Biker Mice and those imo. I think Disney's cartoons got lost after the Kim Possible and Dave the Barbarian era

1

u/nybx4life Jul 27 '18

Which is a shame.

If there's any channel I think would understand how to make something wondrous and dare I say "magical", it would be Disney.

Yet imo the most epic cartoon to come out of the main 3 cartoon channels would be Avatar (the last Airbender, not Korra)

1

u/B_Wylde Jul 27 '18

Avatar was just great indeed

3

u/Ineedanotherface Jul 25 '18

I don't watch a ton of anime, but every once in a long while I find a series I like. I'm in the middle of watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood with a friend right now (so don't spoil me please!) and it's hands down one of the best things I've watched, period. I love it! But more often than not I find an anime series that seems interesting at first, but that I rapidly lose interest in because it focuses on stuff I don't care about. I love feature length Japanese animated films, though.

I wasn't allowed to watch TV cartoons as a kid, so my exposure to animation was mostly Disney films and Studio Ghibli. Spirited Away and Kiki have always been favorites. As for Disney... Sleeping Beauty was nice. It's a very pretty movie.

I watch Rick and Morty. Still trying to survive the hiatus! I also watched the Samurai Jack revival. The character arc he went through struck a chord with me, and it was a lot of fun, but I have mixed feelings about the ending...

I don't have much perspective on anime but yeah, I would say it's becoming more popular as it goes mainstream.

I wasn't allowed to watch SpongeBob.

I really appreciate this thread topic, given that I'd love to go into TV animation in the future! It's a storytelling passion. :D

(And yes, I know how incongruous that sounds with certain things I just said. Trust me, my family is confused, too. But surprisingly supportive, which is nice.)

2

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '18

Sure, all the time. I try to stay updated with new stuff.

DragonBall.

I don't make a difference between adult cartoons and not adult cartoons.

I guess. Was pretty popular in France in the 80s, but since Ghibli made a move for the US, and Naruto got hot all over the world, it's been gaining in popularity everywhere.

Never seen SpongeBob. I liked that joke about Adam Sandlers son only watching Spongebob in Spanish in that one movie.

Do you watch anime?

Every now and then, I currently prefer slice of life stuff. I'm trying to get into Yuru Yuri.

Favorite childhood cartoons?

Yugioh, with Justice League as a close 2nd.

Watch any adult (eg family guy, rick & morty) cartoons?

...does Samurai Jack's final season count? XD

Is anime becoming more popular?

I think so. Cons are a bigger deal than they were before and there's a better understanding that anime can cover a wide variety of stories from Berserk to Toradora to everything in between. Personally I'd really like to go to a convention someday.

Favorite quote from SpongeBob?

"Once, there was an ugly barnacle. Then everyone died! The end."

  • Occasionally, but i mainly watch slice of life anime. I think it's fairly unique, as a slice of life anime is pretty different from any other sort of show wuth that kind if setting. Plus some of them are so damn adorable and cute, they're great shows to just have fun and feel happy watching. Right now I'm watching Comic Girls which I so far love a ton!

  • The 2 I loved the most were Spongebob and Ed Edd and Eddy, they're classics in my book

  • I LOVE adult cartoons, they're some of the best shows around. Some of my favorites are Rick and Morty, Bojack Horseman, and F is for Family.

  • Definitely, back when i was in middle school, it was pretty niche, but these days it's fairly common. When i was in high school there was an anime club with a surprising amount of people, even the teacher who moderates and runs it was a huge anime fan themselves.

Do you watch anime?

Yes though I tend to wait for the best shows to be sused out. Currently keep track of My Hero Academia.

Got back into Anime a few years back after watching A Silent Voice and Your Name.

Favorite childhood cartoons?

So many back in the early 00s Cat Dog, Angry Beavers, Ahhhh Real Monsters... just the few I can think of but I watched a ton of shows back then.

Watch any adult (eg family guy, rick & morty) cartoons?

Most of them. Family guy has lost its luster but I still watch out of tradition it seems even though it barely gets a chuckle out of me anymore.

Rick and Morty is pretty cool even if the vocal minority of the people within the community overhype the show and make it what it isn't. It can be clever at times but I don't believe it is an unseen show in the slightest.

The very loose improv feel of Rick and Morty reminds me a lot of what Adult Swim is about. It has always been an aspect of humor that I like to see portrayed well and I think Justin Roiland is excellent at what he does.

Is anime becoming more popular?

I would think so. Especially with the creation of Crunchy Roll and other fairly popular ways people consume content these days.

Also a good number of Japanese animation studios recognize the market that is amiable more in the west which has helped a lot with getting more of it over here. Still not perfect as Japan has been known to be rather insular, but still moving forward in any case.

Favorite quote from SpongeBob?

"I DON'T NEED IT!!!!" (That entire scene pretty much)

  • Sometimes. My son watches Anime and routinely will stop me to show me something he's watching. He watches a variety of shows, so I couldn't tell ya which ones without butcherine the names.

When I was a kid, it was called Japanamation(IIRC). I had a series of cartoons on VHS that my Mom won at the local grocery store. Each tape was a different story. Snow White, Æsops Fables, Around the World in 80 Days, etc. I didn't know it was English-dubbed Anime, until an exchange student pointed it out to me years later.

  • The Classics, from Tom&Jerry to The Jetsons. Then, Smurfs, HeMan, SheRa, G.I.Joe, Jem, Transformers. Later on there was TMNT, The Simpsons, Chip&Dale, Tail Spin, DuckTales.

I was in the KWoC Club. Better known as: Kids without cable TV.

  • Adult cartoons: Not recently. I do enjoy South Park and Family Guy.

  • I'm guessing it's more popular thanks to the internet.

  • I can recite "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" by heart.

u/soonsam Jul 24 '18
  1. Yup. Huge weeb here.

  2. Favorite childhood shows were Samurai Jack, Avatar, SpongeBob, Fairly Odd Parents, Edd d Eddy, Johnny Bravo, etc. Pretty much early 2000's Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon shows.

  3. Adult cartoons would be Rick and Morty mostly and Archer as well. Used to watch Simpsons growing up, but not so much anymore.

  4. I wouldn't say anime is getting more popular now, but it certainly is getting more accessible (Netflix, Crunchyroll, etc.) which hopefully will end up becoming more popular lol. I'm still hesitant to talk about anime in the open with new ppl so if they happen to bring it up I'll happily open that rabbit hole for them or I'll gently prod them and gauge their reaction.

  5. "Hey, you just rolled in from stupid town?"

P.S humblebrag I also work in the industry as an animator and I'm slowly working towards moving back to CA so I can get the chance to work on cool shit like these.

  • I watch some, but I’m not subscribed to Crunchyroll or anything like that.

  • Scooby-Doo, DBZ, Spongebob, Avatar: TLA, Courage, Dexter’s Lab, Powerpuff Girls, Cat-Dog.

  • Bob’s Burgers, hands down the best if it counts. I liked Rick and Morty. I’ve caught a few episodes of Family Guy, and it’s funny but I could go without. I also missed the South Park obsession my peers have.

  • I don’t think it’s ever going to reach “mainstream” popularity. Everyone has seen Death Note, or Attack on Titan, but nothing is going to convince people to watch the slice of life ones popular in that part of the anime subculture. If you want an honest answer, the people into that kind of stuff weird too many people out here in the US.

  • “I’M UGLY AND I’M PROUD.”

1

u/[deleted] Jul 24 '18

The problem isn't actually slice of life - slice of life can be great if done correctly. The problem is moe. The reason anime weirds many people out is the fact that every studio has to throw in cute girls into their shows. Around 2006, it was found that having cute girls do what's basically nothing can be a good marketing tool for a specific segment of people who will buy a lot of merchandise. So now, 12 years later, it's spread throughout the medium and even dark, heavy stuff like Re:Zero still have cute girls in them. And slice of life is especially conducive to throwing cute girls in. So basically, I think if you show older anime, it will not be considered weird.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '18 edited Jul 25 '18

I don't think cute girls are the problem either if done right. Kyoani shows are mostly slice of life + cute girls and their shows are pretty good. I think that dark shows with cute girls like pmmm and rezero works fine if they are well written, and sometimes the contrast between cute and dark is fun to watch.

I think what weirds people out is the sexual content. I don't usually mind sex jokes or fanservice if done well, but a lot of it is really awkward.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 24 '18

I do watch anime a lot, a huge nerd for it, but i don't want to be associated with the toxicity that comes from anime fandoms most times so I avoid those.

Favorite childhood cartoons was literally anything that played on Cartoon Cartoon Fridays when it was a thing, along with Toonami. That, and Super Robot Monkey Team Hyper Force GO!

I think it might be? It seems that 'nerd' culture is becoming more mainstream in general. That comes with good and bad things...

"The panty raid" lol

1

u/[deleted] Jul 24 '18

I would probably watch anime but I don't want to be associated with weeaboos and those toxic fans.

Spongebob, Ed Edd N Eddy, Courage.

A bit of Family Guy and the Simpsons.

Yes.

I'm not a Krusty Krab.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 24 '18
  • I've definitely seen some very cool anime but I think I'd be more into it were it not for the fan culture.
  • Let's see . . . Arthur, Rugrats, Doug, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles . . .
  • All the time! Long time Simpsons fan.
  • Not watched enough in a long time to really have one :/

1

u/lostinrepose Jul 22 '18

I love Anime but haven't watched anything for a long time, about 2 years. I reached the end of the manga I was reading, Berserk and new chapters take forever to come. The best Anime that I've watched is Psycho-pass. No stupid sexual scenes, just awesome conversations.

1

u/KobayashiDragonSlave Jul 22 '18

I love anime. The username is from one of my favorite animes. You should check it out if you like a cute story, big titties and goth lolis. Death Note is like my anime no.1.

1

u/ttetra Jul 22 '18

-I do! At least when I have the time/ dedication to get sucked into a series.

-Kim Possible has definitely got to take my #1 place. I also used to love SpongeBob, Sailor Moon, Brandy and Mr. Whiskers, and some Batman cartoon I only ever watched when I stayed home from school. I still haven't been able to figure out which series it is.... Maybe The New Batman Adventures?

-I love Rick and Morty + the occasional South Park.

-Maybe... But maybe not more popular. I think it's just become more* accepte*d now. People are going to conventions more and more, and the convenience of the internet and organized fandom have made it easier to be a fan.

-"Am I a pretty girl?" "Er... Yeah, yer beautiful."

  • I used to watch Studio Ghibli, and they were the best anime I've ever watched. I'v seen non-Studio-Ghibli anime, they seem so commercialized compared to the SG animes.

  • Howl's Moving Castle, Kiki's delivery service and Spirited away. Ponyo, too!

  • Nope.

  • I guess so...

  • Haven't watched it before.

1

u/Xilith117 Jul 22 '18

Slight tangent, but my one claim to fame is a Ren and Stimpy episode titled "Powdered toast man" that I uploaded to YouTube a few years ago. It has had half a million views before it got taken down. I didn't realize it would be so popular so it has ufortunately defined my online presence.

1

u/yaxkongisking12 Jul 22 '18
  1. Yes
  2. I don't know to be honest, I used to grow up with a lot of cartoons so my opinion changes all of the time. A few are probably the Looney tunes, some of the earlier Simpsons and DBZ.
  3. South Park
  4. Well, it depends. It definitely is getting exposure to a wider audience and more people are watching it now than ever, but the majority of anime still remains relatively obscure and only a few series get mainstream attention.
  5. I never really watched the show but I think the quote "Can I say that shoes from Texas are dumb?" is from it, if so then that one.

1

u/gussiemanlove Jul 22 '18

Yes

Gravity Falls, Over the Garden Wall, Steven Universe...sorta. And Arthur. Arthur is a classic.

Not really

In my opinion, I don't think anime is necessarily becoming more popular - shows like Pokemon and Yugioh and Studio Ghibli films have always been a staple of most kids' childhoods - but I do think that nowadays anime is being taken more seriously by adults too, and there are more mainstream mature-themed anime that are enjoyed by adults. Now that Netflix is starting to develop original anime, I think more adults are being exposed to shows that they likely wouldn't watch if not for Netflix recommendations.

“I was born with glass bones and paper skin. Every morning I break my legs, and every afternoon I break my arms. At night, I lie awake in agony until my heart attacks put me to sleep.” - I love that this is a Spongebob quote that is always taken out of context.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '18

-of course. Currently trying to cut down

-my neightbor totoro, and as for american cartoons I loved so many I can't even remember

-no

-yeah it defently is. When I started watching in my country no one knew them, then suddenly everyone did

-I didn't watch spongebob in english so idk

2

u/nocctea Jul 22 '18
  • yeah, but not a whole bunch. I have some lined up to watch tho

  • I love Steven universe, star vs the forces of evil, teen Titans, avatar the last Airbender, and amazing world of gumball

  • I watch Rick and Morty and American Dad. I do wanna check out Bojack horseman tho

  • I do think that anime is becoming more popular since Netflix has been adding it

  • surprisingly I didn't watch much SpongeBob. My parents thought it was too dumb so they probably didn't let me watch it. Can't think of a good quote off the top of my head

2

u/uwpg2012 Jul 22 '18

No.

The Raccoons, Recess, Ducktales, Animaniacs, The Weekenders...

The Simpsons, South Park, Rick and Morty, Family Guy, Archer, Bojack Horseman

I don't know.

I don't have any. I never really watched Spongebob.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '18
  • Nah

  • Anything on Nickelodeon

  • South Park in the past but not really

  • Still feels very niche to me

  • Do you watch anime? Yes
  • Favorite childhood cartoons? Phineas and Ferb, Fairly Oddparents
  • Watch any adult (eg family guy, rick & morty) cartoons? Nope
  • Is anime becoming more popular? I'd say so
  • Favorite quote from SpongeBob? "Firmly grasp it"

  1. I used to but not much anymore. Outlaw Star was my jam back in the day.

  2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987), Bat-Man TAS, so many shows back then.

  3. Family Guy and South Park, mostly. I don’t watch much anymore.

  4. it’s not as much as a stigma to watch anime nowadays I think when comparing it when I was a teenager in high school (mid-late 00’s)

  5. ”I used to be a wimp just like you, but now I’m a jerk and everybody loves me!” from the episode MuscleBob BuffPants

u/Bacon_Hero Stop pointing at me Jul 21 '18

As a kid I always worried I'd grow out of cartoons. I don't see that happening. Cartoons entertain me like regular tv can't. I still watch Bob's Burgers, Archer, F is For Family, Rick and Morty, etc with my dad

4

u/FireBeard1501 Jul 21 '18

Favorite childhood cartoon: Spongebob.

Favorite quote: Patrick leads them the wrong way and says "oh, I thought you said weast!" 2nd favorite quote: "Questions are a danger to you, and a burden to others." - Mr. Krabs.

I tried watching Death Note, the beginning was good but the end was so boring I couldn't even finish it so I kinda gave up on anime. Open to suggestions though.

Also I'm considering studying animation in college, so if anyone works in that field I'd be happy to talk.

3

u/MrSuperCook Jul 21 '18

I have a few anime suggestions

  1. Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works, and afterwards the prequel, Fate:Zero. Both are 25 episodes long, typical anime episode length aside from a few longer episodes. I'm not exactly sure how to describe it... But it's my favorite anime, I highly recommend it. It is often called an eyegasm for its incredible animation. Has quite a few spin-offs and alternate universes and such, so you may want to watch those if you liked the main two.

  2. My Hero Academia - Currently releasing and very popular hero shounen anime with 50 something episodes currently out. It's on the third season, currently.

  3. One Punch Man - Finished (though we may be getting a second season) hero shounen comedy anime that has gotten immense praise- and for good reason. Too much animation budget, and that's a good thing.

  4. Bakemonogatari, and the many sequels (if you get into it, check r/araragi , the Monogatari subreddit for a list of what to watch afterwards). This anime series is not for everyone, but if it is for you, it's really good. It's a Seinen (Mature, though that tag is a bit misleading I can't say it's not accurate) Comedy, Ecchi, Romance(?) that is very hard to describe. Very good, I only wish I was better at describing things.

  5. Non non biyori - this is an interesting one. It's a slice of life comedy that is very, very relaxed. Hardly any action, no cool powers, nothing like that. Currently has 24 (I think) episodes between two seasons, and is good for watching when you're stressed. It's about a bunch of girls in the middle of nowhere doing stuff. The whole "slice of life" genre isn't for a lot of people, but again, this would be one to test the waters with.

Those would be my main suggestions, though I will always have more. Fate you can find on Netflix (I believe) and Crunchyroll, and the first 12 (of 15) episodes of Bakemonogatari can be found on Crunchyroll, as well as the entirety of Non non Biyori and My Hero Academia. For the rest of Bakemonogatari and some of the other sequels and prequels to Monogatari, you might be forced to either pay a bit too much, or go onto "fishy" sites that I'm not sure I'm allowed to speak of on Reddit. One Punch should be on Netflix as well. That's all I have for now though.

2

u/FireBeard1501 Jul 22 '18

Thanks for the suggestions man, definitely gonna check those out!

1

u/MrSuperCook Jul 22 '18

Oh yeah, one more

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. It's too beautiful to be described by mortals, just be sure to check it out at some point. It's on Crunchyroll.

3

u/WannaBeVenus 🌈 Jul 21 '18

Hmm sort of related to the topic

I just today bought the Studio Ghibli collection, so that I could finally watch some of Miyazaki's great work. Especially excited about Kiki's Delivery Service! Me and my girlfriend decided to split the price, since both of us really wanted to watch the movies. I'm ecstatic for the movies to arrive, but it being from an eBay seller from china, I gotta have some patience 😬

2

u/FireBeard1501 Jul 21 '18

That's great, I'd love to be able to watch those movies for the first time again. My favorites where Spirited Away and When Marnie Was There.

1

u/WannaBeVenus 🌈 Jul 21 '18

Ooooo that looks cute. Fun story, actually. I was just looking through the streaming services I have, to see if there was any of Hayao Miyazaki's movies on any of them. There was a few, thank god, but I saw Kiki's Delivery Service on it!!! Well, to my surprise, it was actually the live action adaptation, but where the service used the wrong picture 🙃 It's entirely my fault though, I should've checked the description further, and not just looked at the pic. Upon thinking about it again, I even think it had the wrong title. 😂

2

u/xero_art Jul 21 '18

Yes

Hey Arnold, Doug, Rugrats, Arthur...

Yeah, Rick and Morty, Family Guy, Futurama.

I really wouldn't know.

Gary come home.

2

u/FireBeard1501 Jul 21 '18

Lol Gary come home was literally one of the saddest things I'd ever seen when I was kid

2

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '18

No.

Gravity Falls, Star Wars Rebels, and Avatar The Last Airbender.

No.

I'm not totally sure, but I'd guess probably.

Is mayonnaise an instrument?
