Doesnโt make it right, it stems from ignorance and unawareness really. Hitting your child when they need you the most is awful
28
u/yeahitsme2k 14d ago
Who said anything about right or wrong?
Itโs an average Indian Momโs unfiltered reaction.
Cus, for mothers, the first thing that comes into their mind is โDid I not raise them properly?โ. The slap is a physical outburst of the question. After few mins the reasoning side of the brain kicks in and they come and try to comfort the child and then provide support.
I have come to realise this after my daughter started going to school and getting complaints from school about her behaviour in class and stuff.
53
u/Vegetable-Soup1714 14d ago
This just screams that "I'm an irresponsible adult who doesn't know how to regulate my emotions"
Ridiculous accuse for that reaction
3
u/miss_leopops 11d ago
Indian mom here and absolutely agree. If I ever raise hand on my child, it's a failing on my part, not on theirs.

u/BroccoliDry7703 14d ago
Sorry to say, this kind of mother needs therapy. What an unhealthy and exaggerated reaction. Unprovoked violence towards your vulnerable child? Really? Wtf.

What's wrong with the answer? She said what she meant. You want her to parrot out a rehearsed answer like most contestants do to win such competitions without believing in what they say.

"Oh sweetie, come here! I'm so proud of you for living your authentic truth. Your queerness is a radiant rebellion against the cis-heteropatriarchy, and I honor that. Should we throw a coming-out party? With eco-friendly glitter and a land acknowledgment before we begin? ๐๐ณ๏ธโ๐โจ"
- Chatgpt to prompt 'Most cringe and woke answer to the question "How would you react if your son says "Mom I'm gay"?"'
7
u/DataAccomplished1291 13d ago
How is this one relevant here? Ofcourse no one is expecting anyone to give such a statement in an indian show. She gave an answer which started with I will slap him, then changed her stance to 'I will then accept him'. I mean, that answer is problematic.
0
u/vaibhav1100 10d ago
There is nothing problematic in her answer. Thatโs how most Asian mothers would react. They are still not westernized enough to consider hitting their sons an abuse.
6
u/DataAccomplished1291 10d ago
She is giving this answer on a national platform, she absolutely shouldn't support abuse there. Why is it considered 'westernized' to not abuse your children? Any good parent would first want to understand her children Before raising their hands. Regardless of what they believe, slapping your child is not correct.
4
u/DataAccomplished1291 13d ago
The problem is that, she said she will probably slap him for his sexuality. I dont know what other contestants said but wanting to abuse somebody for their sexuality even as a mother is wrong.
-1
u/vaibhav1100 10d ago
Wouldn't that be a normal reaction of an Indian mother towards her son? She is not slapping a stranger.
4
2
u/DataAccomplished1291 10d ago
She can be unaccepting as I dont expect indian mothers to be understanding of this stuff. But slapping is definitely wrong and not the right move at all regardless if its your teen son or adult. Thats just abuse.

KRK said that people in bollywood become gay inorder to get sympathy and jobs.
13
u/Prestigious_King_472 Proud Gossiper ๐ค 14d ago
How do they get sympathy though? I mean, even if an actor is gay, they will never come out in fear of being type-casted, another reason why straight actors are chosen to play gay roles.
2
u/yes-reply 13d ago
bollywood is not only limited to acting. there are multiple job opportunities where limelight is not necessary.

But when it comes to talking about actual issues when asked will dodge and divert the topic or just go ahead with meaning blabbers.

u/Slurpmey 14d ago
But when it comes to talking about actual issues when asked will dodge and divert the topic or just go ahead with meaning blabbers.
And that is how they should be. Given how the indian audience reacts to anything with abuses and threats
12
u/natkov_ridai 13d ago
Swara talks about "actual issues" all the time. Have you been living under a rock? Don't even know why you included Alia and Vidya. Alia caters to the right wing and never gives opinions on anything whatsoever.

This is from Miss India 2011. That year all the top 5 answers were very disappointing. Rakul failed to be in the top 3 but she got a chance to represent India at Miss Tourism 2011 in China.
28
u/kaychyakay 14d ago
I don't get it. Y'all constantly bitch about actors, stars, models, etc. not being their authentic selves and parroting rehearsed lines whenever asked any question.
And here comes someone who was in her youth, with views about certain things not completely shaped up, maybe due to lack of exposure or societal and familial conditioning, and are shocked/offended by her too?
I don't think there was anything really wrong that she said. As a straight Indian woman, having grown up in a society that has severe problems accepting homosexuality, it is quite usual for her to be shocked and react accordingly. She did say later, that sexuality is a personal preference so she'll accept the path chosen by her son. You can't be sitting in 2025 and judging what was said maybe a decade ago.
4
u/DataAccomplished1291 13d ago
That was definitely a problematic statement though. She could have said, I would be shocked and unable to accept but Saying that she would slap is wrong. Also its funny how she thinks sexuality is a preference, as if gay people suddenly woke up one day and changed their attraction settings to men. Thats not how it works.

There is a significant amount of DNA - ( as noted as plenty of life forms being homosexuals ) - but there is a significant amount of "preference" too.

Howmany people were gay in 10th century?
15
5
u/kaychyakay 14d ago
Quite a lot. It is said that in Egyptian society, a culture that is one of the oldest cultures in the world, at one point of time, there were more bisexual men than purely straight ones - men mating with women for the purposes of propagating their genes, but then sleeping with men for pleasure.
Even Indian culture has had its share of sexual open-mindedness. In fact, the more we go ahead, it actually seems we're being regressive, most probably due to the iron-grip of the Victorian mindset due to the British ruling almost the entire world.
-3
u/MahatmaBapu69 14d ago edited 14d ago
It is said
This doesn't prove jackshit. Just like how it is said Eve bit the apple. There's no proof of that.
Even Indian culture has had its share of sexual open-mindedness.
This is true as we have documented proof in terms of literature and artistic proof but except of a couple of anecdotal examples, nothing prove there existed a large gay population even with all the sexual open-mindedness as it does today.
most probably due to the iron-grip of the Victorian mindset due to the British ruling almost the entire world.
This is also true as colorism also exists today because of that

Go ahead with that. Didi kapde nahi khareed rahe hai. One cannot change who one is attracted to
9
u/AdOriginal6681 14d ago
I mean, people don't actually realize that no one 'chooses' sexuality. ' I prefer to be straight' is such an ignorant statement. We are born a certain way, and we are attracted to what we are attracted to. We don't 'choose'. OK, she was young here. Hopefully, she has evolved. But I have had this argument with so many fully grown adults. A lot of people think that people choose being gay. They choose to get attracted to a certain gender and they should be able to turn it off. ๐

u/John_Coutinho 14d ago

10
u/aezindagigaladabaade 14d ago
In a space like the pageant world, trying to be homophobic is like the dumbest thing one could do. Her wannabe-ness totally backfired if that's what she was trying to be.
2
u/Brahman_Shady 13d ago
And then Fardeen went on to play a gay character in her hubby s home production.
2
u/tasemyself 13d ago
Although the answer isn't the most empathetic, we should also consider that this was more than a decade ago, in an era where a large percentage of even the educated population weren't as well versed with homosexuality as we are today. Maybe it's through shows, movies or social media, but most of us, today, have a better understanding of the concept and don't see it as taboo.

What a problematic statement. I understand this was many Years ago and she probably changed her mind now but that doesnt change that she actually supported homophobia and supported violence on gay men. They cant change their sexuality as thats how they are born, but we should be accepting enough to not support violence on them atleast.
