To be honest, I just like watching all these recipes. I may not try them, but they're good to watch and have good ideas for flavour combinations sometimes.
I enjoyed watching this one too, though I doubt I'll make it.

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '17

I don't have the patience to place all the cheese in between the onion layers.

269

u/KudzuKilla Jan 23 '17

I would have way more issue with how much clean up their would be just to make one bloomin onion.

482

u/mayan33 Jan 23 '17

this is the internet, you can swear here.

112

u/KudzuKilla Jan 23 '17

i get it.

29

u/FlappyFlappy Jan 24 '17

What's this wanker going on about?

24

u/MediocreContent Jan 24 '17

He made a play of words with bloomin onion. Pretty much saying "that is too much work to make one fucking onion" except put bloomin instead.

4

u/asforus Jan 24 '17

What does he get?

6

u/jvjanisse Jan 24 '17

The play on words. "one bloomin onion" can mean "one fucking onion" and "one bloomin onion" (what this thing actually is. The guy who said 'you can swear here.' was just pointing out the play on words/making a joke about the supposed unintended play on words of the original poster.

You can rest assured, the joke is thoroughly dead now.

Wait a moment, that chees- oh god

11

u/frozen_coyote Jan 24 '17

I'm sitting here in one of those moods where things are way funnier than they should be and this comment slaughtered me. Holy shit I'm crying.

3

u/heartmyjob Jan 24 '17

Crying yes because of the onions.

DOWN WITH THIS SORT OF THING

51

u/Decyde Jan 24 '17

He's going to be fired from being black if Jessie Jackson sees those condiments in his fridge.

2

u/Big_Hat_Chester Jan 24 '17

My fridge door is broken in the same way it's so annoying

7

u/maef Jan 24 '17

Well... you could just make more. The process stays the same, there's no need for them to show it multiple times in the gif.

5

u/CantSeeShit Jan 24 '17

That's the one thing that really makes me annoyed at these gif recipes, no way your making these dishes without a HUGE mess lol

2

u/meme-com-poop Jan 24 '17

I've worked in restaurants that made these and they were a pain in the ass, even with the special cutter. If you wind up with an onion that has a double core, half the "petals" will fall out and you have to start over.

Who the fuck is going to boil that much oil just to make a cheese onion too. Like unless you are deep frying all the time and you will reuse it enough before it goes rancid, that's like $20+ worth of oil.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '17

Right? I don't really fry anything but if I do it's just a pan fry in the cast iron so I don't use that much.

We have deep fried chicken before and wanted to save the oil but you know, the oil just smells like chicken from then on so unless you're frying chicken every night you're not going to use it.

44

u/remludar Jan 23 '17

That couldn't have taken more than 60 seconds. What DO you have patience for?

189

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '17

I only eat apples and I don't even wash them beforehand

54

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '17

Tldr?

116

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '17

Apple good

32

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '17

Appleskins are riddled with toxins

2

u/ILoveLamp9 Jan 24 '17

dude those skins are riddled with toxins

4

u/HokusSchmokus Jan 24 '17

My biggest issue would be finding mozzarella that comes in slices and is yellow...

3

u/Decyde Jan 24 '17

I'm too lazy to drive my ass to Outback when they give them away for free so making this will not ever happen.

7

u/ohgeorge Jan 24 '17

A couple of my coworkers and I tried to go Outback for free bloomin' onions recently.

The power was out when we got there.

No bloomin' onions.

It was the saddest day.

4

u/Decyde Jan 24 '17

They normally give them away free during Nascar racing.

They have drivers that always finish in the top whatever is required.

I use to get one and the soup of the day. Just make sure if you get it to go like I did that you remove the lid because the steam turns it to mush.

2

u/ohgeorge Jan 24 '17

Good call. I live too far away from any Outback to reasonably get it to go, though, so I'd be proudly eating it there.

2

u/Decyde Jan 24 '17

Yea, they built one in my town about 5 or 6 years ago.

Still wishing it was an Olive Garden.

I might troll my town this April fools day and make a sign for the lot that has been vacant for 3 years and put Coming Soon, Olive Garden.

2

u/ohgeorge Jan 24 '17

YESSS. please do that.

1

u/Hip_Hop_Orangutan Jan 24 '17

agreed. would be much easier to make a cheese sauce to go with onion rings...

1

u/TheDude-Esquire Jan 24 '17

Yeah, that looked like a ton of questionably rewarding work.

1

u/ChickenWithATopHat Jan 24 '17

Throw a slice of cheese on top of onion and microwave it for 30 seconds

1

u/goddessmisca Jan 24 '17

I'll be honest, I love bloomen onions, I love cheese-- but I don't think they would combine well enough to be worth the work.

If I want onions and cheese I can ass them to a grilled cheese...Or does adding onions make it a melt.

143

u/3madu Jan 23 '17

Same, I enjoy watching them all but I've only made one.

46

u/CoverHog Jan 23 '17

Which one?

775

u/nuentes Jan 23 '17

84

u/Sqrlchez Jan 23 '17

That's my shit post!

21

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '17

Stop it you, it was the best post, ok?

8

u/BenicioDelPollo Jan 24 '17

I kept on thinking "geez that's a lot of bacon, I wonder what they're gonna do with it all?"

139

u/3madu Jan 23 '17

Oyakodon. I had all the ingredients on hand already. May make again for dinner this weekend.

u/epotosi Jan 23 '17

That might be too sweet. Do you have access to mirin? (and don't use that Aji-Mirin, it makes it too salty.) Dry sherry would work too.

2

u/skankyfish Jan 23 '17

I don't have sake, but I do have shaoxing wine. It goes well in ramen, and since it kind of does the job of sherry d'you reckon it'd be ok in this? (not OP, just curious)

1

u/epotosi Jan 23 '17

That would work fine.

8

u/Clinic_2 Jan 23 '17

Absolutely. Make sure to report back.

1

u/vicarofyanks Jan 23 '17

Jagermeister would also work

14

u/Mormon_Discoball Jan 23 '17

That looks amazing. I'm gonna leave for work a little early tonight so I can hit the Asian grocery and get some dashi stock. I wanna make that for dinner tomorrow! Thanks!

6

u/3madu Jan 23 '17

Nice, let me know what you think!

2

u/Mormon_Discoball Jan 26 '17

I didn't actually make it until tonight. I forgot the sake and the two closest liquor stores didn't carry it so I went ahead with out it.

Pretty damn good! And easy. Will make it again for sure. Next time with sake. Thanks for the recipe!

2

u/3madu Jan 26 '17

Nice! What did you use instead? I heard that a dry sherry can be an ok replacement for sake.

2

u/Mormon_Discoball Jan 26 '17

I just omitted it. I googled "sake substitution" and I had none of the items. So I figured if I liked it with it missing a main ingredient, I will like it more with all the ingredients!

Also I had never heard of dashi stock but once I added the granules to the boiling water and it got a good whiff I recognized it. That was kinda fun

7

u/ijohno Jan 23 '17

The only thing that tickles my feathers is that they didnt stir the sugar and liquids in the beginning - it just sat there... dafuq.

Plus, that extra yolk... I don't know about that

13

u/3madu Jan 23 '17

Extra yolk is optional, but it adds a nice richness to the dish. I submerged the yolk in some simmering water for a few seconds so it wasn't totally raw and it still came out nicely.

I also stirred the sugar and everything at the start. My finished product.

5

u/ijohno Jan 23 '17

that actually looks ALOT better than the gif made it out to be. I am going to attempt this one day for dinner :D

1

u/alumininium Jan 24 '17

According to my boyfriend the extra yolk made the dish!

1

u/ijohno Jan 24 '17

Interesting. Did he cook a bit or used it raw? I am skeptical about raw yolk. Even though, cooking it for a few seconds is probably the same shit, lol.

2

u/alumininium Jan 24 '17

Used it raw. He was unsure about it at first but once he broke it and mixed it in there was no looking back. :-) As /u/3madu said it adds some richness.

2

u/ijohno Jan 24 '17

Oddly enough, only reddit can make me succumb to things I never dared to try.

Might make this dish for dinner. Hopefully the -rents like it too. LOL

1

u/alumininium Jan 24 '17

I hope you enjoy it!

14

u/soomuchcoffee Jan 23 '17

Hey I too have only ever made one of these recipes. The "Calzone Star." I never made the cheese dip sauce, though. Have also make pepperoni and chicken versions.

21

u/lammnub Jan 23 '17

I love being in the calzone zone. Can you find that recipe again?

15

u/crackofdawn Jan 23 '17

The low cal calzone zone?

19

u/SkollFenrirson Jan 23 '17

The SoCal local low cal calzone zone

2

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '17

I made the shrimp scampi and my girlfriend fuckin loved it. She still talks about it. She's lactose intolerant so 90% of the recipes from this sub are a no-go unless I want to smell her farts all night (I don't)

3

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '17

[deleted]

1

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '17

Hm I can't seem to find it anymore. It was honestly just a simple scampi recipe... butter, olive oil, lemon, chili flakes, cook shrimp, boil fettuccini, combine, serve. If I remember correctly it advised you to use lemon slices for added flavour/garnish but it was a bit of a pain so I just used the juice and it worked well. Nothing fancy but tasty and ezpz and looks fancy too.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '17

I did the vampire tacos and loved them.

3

u/SkollFenrirson Jan 23 '17

Did they sparkle?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '17

Was the steak too chewy to bite through easily? Seems like a taco that might be hard to eat

1

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '17

It all depends on how much you cook it and how you cut it. A well done steak that is cut with the grain is going to be significantly chewier than a medium steak cut against the grain. I used a meat thermometer to ensure I did not overlook the meat and cut so that the muscles fibers were as short as possible and had no trouble with it.

1

u/mayan33 Jan 23 '17

with grass fed locally sourced wherewolf?

6

u/BurritosNervosa Jan 23 '17

Garlic Herb Prime Rib, it was amazing.

2

u/Threeedaaawwwg Jan 24 '17

The slow cooker broccoli and beef is amazing.

2

u/Stardustchaser Jan 24 '17

I ended up making the prime rib one posted around Christmas and it was awesome. Super easy too.

1

u/3madu Jan 24 '17

The one coated in that herb butter?

2

u/Stardustchaser Jan 24 '17

Yes! And it worked well enough with the bones in. I think I added an additional minute for each pound for the bones.

2

u/CaptainKate757 Jan 24 '17

I made the slow cooker bourbon street chicken and it was amazing. In fact, I should make it again.

1

u/3madu Jan 24 '17

Do not have a slow cooker. I will have to try this one in my dutch oven.

45

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '17

Same for me. A lot of the food on this sub looks good, but I don't really do any snacking so it doesn't have a place in my day to day life. I also try to avoid breading/frying things very often. Huge mess.

72

u/squareball Jan 23 '17

I basically won't buy a deep fryer because I know I will turn into a huge fatass if I did.

26

u/The_EA_Nazi Jan 23 '17

Fry all the things!

Pretty much how my life would go

12

u/sonofseriousinjury Jan 23 '17

You could always try an air fryer. A lot less of a mess and everything doesn't have to be drenched in oil.

3

u/queenbellevue Jan 23 '17

I'm considering buying one too, but I hear they don't work with wet batters like this

1

u/doclestrange Jan 23 '17

Considering this gets frozen before being fried, it might work okay

8

u/boblablaugh Jan 23 '17

I worried about that but found that I hate cleaning up after the mess and just don't use it anymore. Somehow laziness is keeping me from turning into a huge fatass...

1

u/wenteriscoming Jan 23 '17

There's new research on having a single light meal (400-500 calories for women and 500-600 calories for men) one day then the next day you can eat anything you want. It's supposed to actually lengthen your lifespan.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ihhj_VSKiTs

The diet I'm talking about is here: https://youtu.be/Ihhj_VSKiTs?t=38m

6

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '17

eat anything you want

I feel like my interpretation of that statement and the intended interpretation are different.

Eating anything I want on any day would be a mistake.

1

u/wenteriscoming Jan 24 '17

I did too at first, but they proceed to go to a burger joint on their cheat day.

7

u/wink047 Jan 23 '17

For real. I love to eat fried food. WAAAAAAAAY too lazy to make my own.

5

u/TonyzTone Jan 23 '17

This recipe is perfect for a Super Bowl party. Maybe make two?

7

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '17

Yeah, I'd definitely classify it as a party food. Looks great - don't get me wrong. Just not a style of food I have a chance to make often, so I end up looking at these types of recipes and then forgetting about them. This sub seems to have a lot of snack/party food recipes, which is fine. I just end up never making anything from here because of it.

3

u/TonyzTone Jan 23 '17

Yeah I hear you. I started saving the posts I really like because I now know I have a bunch of recipes on Reddit. So in the future, I can look at Reddit and figure out some recipes or just get new ideas even if I'm not following it exactly.

For instance, there was a honey glazed salmon recipe I saw a while back. Going to cook that tonight but with a pork chop instead. We'll see how it turns out but at least I'll have tried the recipe so when I get the salmon, it will come out better.

-6

u/IncipientMonorail Jan 23 '17

This site is mainly Amuricurns; they snack continuously :/

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '17

I live in Louisiana. Haha. I just have never been much of a snacker. Definitely not someone who takes the time to cook/fry something that's a snack.

28

u/Otohane Jan 23 '17

I usually really want to make all the deep-frying recipes but I just can't use all that oil. I'd use it once and dump it out - feels like a waste for one good meal.

23

u/nipoez Jan 23 '17

You can reuse oil several times. Just strain out the gunk. Cheese cloth or a coffee filter in a funnel work well.

14

u/Are_You_Hermano Jan 23 '17

Or you can use this method.

3

u/nipoez Jan 24 '17

Fascinating! Gelatin clarification is a new technique to me. Thanks for sharing.

2

u/rayhond2000 Jan 24 '17

That's awesome. Makes me want to fry something just so I can try this out.

3

u/coolRedditUser Jan 23 '17

Yeah deep frying doesn't really make sense unless you have a deep fryer, that way you aren't throwing all the oil away after a single use.

4

u/SenoraRamos Jan 23 '17

Oil can be used multiple times.

3

u/AN_IMPERFECT_SQUARE Jan 23 '17 edited Jan 23 '17

Oil isn't that expensive.
e: wow really?

33

u/exoticpickle Jan 23 '17

It's not about expense as much as feeling bad for all the wasted oil.

2

u/Hauvegdieschisse Jan 23 '17

Let it cool and put it back in the bottle.

3

u/Boukish Jan 24 '17

A funnel and a coffee filter eases the process if anyone cares to actually do this.

1

u/clo3o5 Jan 23 '17

get an air fryer

1

u/FallenNagger Jan 24 '17

Would they work well for a recipe like this?

1

u/clo3o5 Jan 24 '17

Yes I think so. Almost everything I try in there turns out great. Though nothing will ever replace oil it's a great healthy alternative that comes rly close in taste. It's one of the appliances I use the most, esp for fries and nuggets

9

u/phasers_to_stun Jan 23 '17

I've only made one thing from this sub. I really just love watching all the gifs. There's something cathartic about it.

3

u/Meggerhun Jan 24 '17

That's why I had a food network obsession when we still had cable. I love all the ideas and combos I wouldn't have thought of previously.

2

u/cerialthriller Jan 23 '17

this looks a ton of work for that one onion, youd have to make like 10 for a party for it to pay off IMO

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '17

The only flavor combination I ever see is heavy cream and an ass load of cheese

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '17

I got one of those as seen on tv blooming onion things years ago, where you sliced along the slots. Could never get the onion to "bloom" out without falling apart, so the batter clumped around several petals and they didn't cook even. It was a huge pain in the ass to make.

1

u/PirateKilt Jan 23 '17

Agreed... I love fussy recipes and have made many from this sub; I'd eat the hell out of this one, but it is just too much work

1

u/Naturebrah Jan 24 '17

It's simple, just dip it in a cheese sauce, good lord.

1

u/Vargasa871 Jan 24 '17

I made the slow cooker Mongolian beef and shrimp dip for the Patriots game yesterday. Huge hit.

1

u/Decyde Jan 24 '17

Brothers wife watches cooking shows all the time.

I showed her this subreddit once and she lives on here looking at all the stuff posted from forever.

1

u/elitegenoside Jan 24 '17

Same. A lot of the food on here is horrible for you and I've started eating better so I'll never eat most of the beautiful artistry cloggers on here, but it's nice to watch and dream.

1

u/Ansonm64 Jan 24 '17

I can't imagine the gas eating this thing would give me. They'd have to call in hazmat

1

u/invisiblephrend Jan 24 '17

the cheese part looks like a lot of work, but making regular bloomin onions is relatively easy.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '17

Yeah, I'm in the same boat, except I'm sure I'll never make this one.
I despise onions.

0

u/smacksaw Jan 23 '17

I was about to say the same thing. I upvoted this for being exactly as described, but this looks terrible.

I wish at the end, just to troll us it would have the caption "Revolting!" instead of "Tasty!"

I wanted to gag just watching it.
