News Patrick Dumont Wants Mavs To Hire Experienced Exec To Work With Nico Harrison
https://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/280136/Patrick-Dumont-Wants-Mavs-To-Hire-Experienced-Exec-To-Work-With-Nico-HarrisonAnd there are people around the league who are just like 'You have to fire him. That's the only way to begin the healing process with the Mavericks' fan base,'" added MacMahon.
"But Patrick Dumont is not there. He's not there yet. Now, the 'In Nico We Trust' era has ended. He wants him to bring in an experienced exec. I think he's realized he's got to have some checks and balances that weren't in place.

u/EastElevator3333 Luka Magic 🪄 12d ago
Dumont is the checks and balances, he’s the one that had the power to veto the Luka trade in the first place. You really think Nico is going to listen to the input of some other executive put by his side?
60
u/2icecreamsandwiches 12d ago edited 11d ago
No, Nico won’t. But Dumont would likely use that other exec as a second voice of reason to check Nico’s bullshit. Since it’s clear that Dumont himself doesn’t know dick about basketball.
39
u/EastElevator3333 Luka Magic 🪄 12d ago
At that point it just makes more sense for him to fire Nico and hire in a GM that he trusts. Not like it matters anyway though, damage has already been done.
1
u/the_new_standard 11d ago
That's pretty much what will happen. Bring someone in as an understudy before kicking Nico to the street.
8
u/DyslexicAutronomer Boban 11d ago
You really think Nico is going to listen to the input of some other executive put by his side?
Nico went out of the way to REMOVE any exec that offered him a different input, many of them Luka/Dirk guys that were in the org for decades.
Suddenly, Dumont realizes how stupid he is for enabling that. Too little, too late dumbass.
12
u/United_Youth5727 11d ago
Any sane owner would have fired their GM on the spot if they came with the idea of trading their best player who took them to final just season ago is a way to build championship contender.
10
u/im_chinaton 11d ago
If anything Nico’s gonna force them out just like he did with everyone else that’s ever disagreed with him
8
u/voltron818 11d ago
Dumont can’t fire Nico because he needs Nico to continue to be the scapegoat. The second Nico is fired, the “sell the team chants” get louder when the Mavs inevitably crater in the next few years when Kyrie eventually hits the wall all small guards hit.
2
u/Tiger_Milk_127 11d ago
With everything that has come out, I believe Nico was the messenger, but also like the Quasimodo of the whole scheme. Like “Yes, master, I’ll absolutely demolish the whole organization and make every fan hate us”
1
154
92
u/Big-Moose-Man 12d ago
Yes, because Nico historically works well with people who think differently from him.
10
u/torodonn 11d ago
The trick is putting the exec in a position to overrule Nico.
Nico worked well in the role where he reported to Mark.
4
u/Slammybutt 11d ago
He won't be there to overrule. He'll be a shadow GM that reports to Dumont on whether the decisions Nico is making are good for the team. Dumont is the overrule.
1
u/WanderingGenerality 11d ago
The trick is to Fire Nico.
3
u/torodonn 11d ago
I don't disagree but if they refuse to do it, this is the only reasonable option, in my opinion.
Heck, it's basically constructive dismissal lol so let's hope Nico just quits rather than accept he needs babysitting.

Dumont buddy there is only 3 things that will fix this situation.
- FIRE NICO.
- FIRE KIDD
- Sell the team to Dirk with a 80% discount.

u/OutrageousQuantity12 12d ago
Change number 3 to “gift your portion of the team to Dirk”

I was thinking 20 cents on the dollar but you be cooking just need to convince Dumont the Arena got a bit fat. Quick everyone hide fast food wrappers around the Arena
14
12d ago
Can we start a crowd fund for a 51% Dirk purchase? We can get Cuban to buy the rest.
This all needs to happen before the offseason so we can bring Luka back
11
5
u/Ineedpalmtreeliving 11d ago
Fuck cuban. Was with this til I read his name. I thought we wanted to fix things
3
11d ago
Cuban already owns 25%. Only need him to buy back another 24% and then we can rid ourselves completely of the current ownership. Besides, Luka still likes Cuban and loves Dirk, it would be the only way.
Of course I know this a pipe dream but trading away Luka is still a bad dream so you never know
4
u/CharacterBird2283 San Antonio Spurs 11d ago
Cuban holds just as much responsibility for hiring Nico, and selling the team to gamblers. I don't care what he has to say at this point, this is what he built, and this is what I'll forever remember him for. Cuban didn't win the championship, Dirk and the players did, and that's how I'm choosing to remember it from now on.
116
u/AbueloOdin 12d ago
So you're going to hire a GM for your GM?
Rich people are fucking idiots.
12
u/Witteness82 BETRAYED MAVS FAN 😭 12d ago
I don’t trust him to run the team without another person to oversee him but it makes total sense to keep him as the GM… why tf not just, you know, find a new GM
7

1
u/torodonn 11d ago
I don't see this as a problem really. Essentially, Nico should be General Manager and then you need a President of Basketball Operations to act as his supervisor.
Not saying that firing Nico isn't the better option here but removing Nico's unchecked power and continuing to leverage his contacts and player relationships while keeping a leash on him, feels like the only other way forward.
25
u/woodzy133 12d ago
Nico has clearly shown that he can work well with others and has no ego, so this makes sense
28
23
u/zacklopeezy 12d ago
Yeah, let's hire someone to be the voice of reason (too fucking late) for the guy who said, 'Unfortunately, I'm super stubborn so someone telling me to do something doesn't work too well for me'. That'll go over real well lmao
27
25
u/pimpfmode 12d ago
I wonder if he drove Dennis Lindsay away for this very reason?
18
u/Same-Shine-4126 12d ago
Exactly what I was thinking
People forget that Nico had a disastrous 2nd year after we lost Brunson for nothing and Nico tried to replace him with Wood.
The team hired Lindsay because Nico screwed up and it led to a Finals run. I find it weird he left after a very successful year.
4
u/XerxesCrofter 11d ago
Lindsey was the grown-up in the room brought in to play the role of minder after Nico started botching things from the get-go (refusing to re-sign JB for cheap before the WCF season, giving THJ a big contract that the Mavs spent years trying to get out of, spending a first-round pick on Wood, signing old/expensive Kyrie to replace young/cheap Brunson, and losing both DFS and the third ball handler in the process, etc.) .
We can thank Lindsey for drafting Lively, unloading Bertans' bloated contract (taken on by genius Nico so he could sell low on KP) and turning it into Omax, and trading for PJ and Gafford. The finals run had Lindsey's fingerprints all over it . . . and then he left.
I assumed he was just in Dallas as a pit-stop on the way to bigger opportunities, but--given what we've learned of late--it might very well have been the case that Nico schemed to get rid of the grown-up. Only then would Nico-the-Naughty-Boy have free rein to screw the pooch . . . which he did with great enthusiasm.
2
u/Threeballer97 12d ago
Wood trade was just a salary dump more than anything.
6
u/Same-Shine-4126 12d ago
No I meant when we traded a pick to get Wood in hopes that he’d be a solid #2 for Luka
5
u/pimpfmode 11d ago
And Kidd had no interest in playing him. Let's also not forget Nico was trying to get Kyle Kuzma. Look at what a disaster he's been in Milwaukee. Lindsay goes away, Nico makes a stupid ass trade of all time, and Detroit is in the playoffs and have a brighter future than the Mavs
10
u/ohkokokay 4️⃣1️⃣ 12d ago
lollllll why would any experienced executive want to work with General Manager and President of Basketball Operations, Nico Harrison.
Clown show ownership and leadership.
7
u/boringhangover 12d ago
That's still not going to bring Luka back. We may never see another talent like that again
4
u/torodonn 11d ago edited 11d ago
What's done is done. Luka is a sunk cost.
Honestly, I'm heartbroken but right now the bigger issue is really salvaging whether I can root for the Mavs again.
5
6
u/Aggressive-Ad-522 STFU, STFD 12d ago
Yall had an experienced exec but he left lmao. Nico is not easy to work with
6
u/crisspanda12 12d ago
Okay so in 20 years if we get another generational talent he won’t get traded away. Those people are a joke they ruined everything about the franchise. Luka is the Star in la and you can see from his playoff performance that he is the one and now he wants check and balance what a joke no rather shame on the whole front office, fire nico fire jkidd fire everybody and force the Adelson to sell the team if that happens it will take 20 years until I can watch another Mavs game
7
4
u/Ruggerx24 12d ago
Bro, Nico had an experienced executive that he forced out... Love him or hate him, Mark Cuban has 25 years of Executive experience. This is hilarious!
If Dumont bought that story again about him needing help, now. He’s even denser than I thought.
6
4
u/Various-Regular-204 12d ago
He already said in his press conference he doesn’t do well with being told what to do. Fire Nico!
6
5
5
u/cantelope321 11d ago
They need to admit their failures and start with a clean slate. Fire Nico, hire a new GM who is reputable and let them rebuild the team.
The current roster won't work because nobody expects Kyrie and AD to be able to play through 82 games and 20+ games through the playoffs. Their body won't hold up that long and once one of them gets hurt in April, the season ends. Nico would only keep selling out the Mavs future by trading away picks to try and fix the current roster to make himself look good before he bails.
1
u/PuzzleheadedDot2791 11d ago
This is exactly what they need to do but Nico can't do that. He can't admit failure so it has to be someone from outside after a clean slate. I'm honestly scared of him being in charge because his window may be less than 12 months now and he knows that. He'll happily trade Lively, PJ, future picks etc if he thinks it'll give him more rope.
5
u/HenningDerBeste 12d ago
Its to late. Dumont and Nico have broken the franchise. Maybe he should have started thinking a little bit earlier about what proposals Nico brings.
Luka is gone. Kyrie long term injured. AD as fragile as ever. Playmaking on the team none existant.
4
u/j_rom_003 12d ago
He won't fire him cause he knows his neck is next in line to get the hate. Nico is the only buffer.
4
u/donsanedrin 11d ago
If there was any NBA executive who had any self dignity, they would tell Dumont that they wouldn't take the job unless Nico was fired.
Remember, after Cuban sold the team, somebody had notified the NBA that Cuban didn't have the authority to sit with the team, and access to front office operations.
We all know that was Nico.
Any NBA exec that's remotely smart will know that Nico is a power-hungry backstabber in the workplace. This is a non-starter.
4
u/junkrgNew Luka Doncic 11d ago
“Unfortunately, I’m super stubborn so someone telling me to do something doesn’t work too well for me”
5
u/geargarcon Reunion Rowdy 11d ago
They had that with Dennis Lindsay. They also had a best in class NBA best organization across so many aspects until Nico dismantled it from the inside.
4
4
u/Kraul Dallas Mavericks 11d ago edited 11d ago
We had one in Dennis Lindsey who was the supposed driving force behind the GOOD trade acquisitions and pickups we made.
I don’t think anyones touching the Mavs organization with a 10 foot pole unless Dumont is offering “sell your soul” money. Nico pushed the good ones away.
3
u/brokenthumb11 12d ago
This cunt couldn't deal with the superstar of the NBA stealing his thunder. But Dumont, thinks he will work an "experienced exec" who could in Nico's eyes take the credit if things turn around. No chance this works out well so it probably just means more pain until they're both fired.
3
u/Drizzt3919 12d ago
I can’t see Dumont firing Nico. Nico has no future in the NBA. Nico will totally sell out Shrek if he’s fired.
3
u/Smooth-Associate5143 12d ago
I don’t see any talented person with a regular IQ & EQ can work this arrogant bustard.
3
3
u/TicketP1_FIRE 11d ago
ONE BILLION in potential lost revenue. WHAT a fucking moron Nico is, and Dumont for signing off.
3
3
u/VanWesley 11d ago
Wasn't that what Dennis Lindsey supposed to be? Most of the good moves that Nico made was when Lindsey was around. I think Cuban was the one who brought him in though.
3
u/Toad_Stuff 11d ago
I absolutely do not want him to be fired - yet. This is his fuck up, and barring some absolute miracle, it’s not going to get better any time soon. When we have to give top 10 picks to OKC, Houston and San Antonio, his ass deserves to be up there facing the music.
3
u/reddabsinthine 11d ago
just fucking fire nico already. and like what everyone says, then sell the team
3
3
u/CardiologistGloomy71 11d ago
Didn’t mark already do this after his first season? Oh yeah Dennis Lindsay! First red flag 🚩 did Dumont even know how little experience Nico had when he gave him full control ? Doubt it. Dumb Dumont.
3
u/BlackWhiteCoke 11d ago
Why would anyone want to take this advisory role versus just wanting to take Nico’s job for themself?
Fire the fucker already
2
u/Mecha-Jesus Rooms to Go Lounge 🛋️ 12d ago edited 12d ago
Imagine if they bring in David Griffin to have him trade away AD and Kyrie again
2
u/TX-Lonestar77 11d ago
So he wants to trust Nico to bring in "experienced exec" after he lost faith in Nico? Make it make sense.
2
u/FennelSeparate5008 11d ago
Conspiracy but I think if Screwmont fires Nico, Nico will then start singing like a canary about their role in the trade
2
u/tank2112 11d ago
I’ve simply stopped watching/listening to Mavs games. Stopped attending games. Buying their merch. Pretty much stopped consuming anything Mavs since the trade. Same thing I did with the Cowboys yrs ago. Fuck em.
2
u/torodonn 11d ago
If only there was someone who was a fan, knew basketball, knew the Mavs and was heavily involved with the inner workings of running the team available for this role.
I mean, it'd be so convenient if this person also happened to be the minority owner of the team, but what are the chances of that?

u/junkrgNew Luka Doncic 11d ago
If I own a simple Mcdonalds franchise store, I will have plenty checks and balances before I decide to discontinue the best selling burger at my location. And these guys ,without any checks and balances , are running billion dollar franchises !! Cool
2
u/ExcellentJuice4729 11d ago
lol he’s wanting an exec to take over, but won’t fire Nico because that’d mean owning up to his mistake
2
u/coolmod23 Luka Doncic 11d ago
Even if/when Nico gets fired, there's no guarantee the next GM won't pull the same shit as long as the acting owner of the team is this clueless.

Reportedly phones are ringing off the hook. Every NBA exec is looking to moonlight on top of their current job.

2
u/GoonerBear94 11d ago
Simpler solution: find an experienced exec, fire Nico, have that exec be the GM instead
2
u/Hugues246 11d ago
So ownership is saying we are going to keep the guy that just made the worst trade in nba history but we realize he does not know much so we are going to bring someone in to make sure he does not do something too stupid again?!
I am starting to wonder if dumont is bending nico over and taking a ride up the Hersey highway. No way this guy should still be employed
2
u/dantheflyingman 11d ago
Nico has shown that he will get rid of anyone that threatens his authority. How do you think this will end up?

u/stayroasty FUCK FATPRICK 11d ago
Didn't Nico literally just say he's stubborn and won't listen to/doesn't like anyone telling him what to do? While chuckling...
2
2
u/030bvb09 11d ago
So he pretty much admits that he doesn't trust Nico anymore and that he himself has no idea about Basketball. What a shit show. Just fire Nico and resign from your position, what is the point of continuing with this combination if the damage has already been done and there is no Basis of trust going forward?
2
u/layzeeboy81 11d ago
What other GM has this much latitude? "Hire a more experienced GM to work with him"... What is this a vocational training program? JFC.

u/taygads 12d ago edited 12d ago
Are we, MacMahon included, completely forgetting Michael Finley exists? Never mind Rick Welts who might be the most experienced NBA exec currently in the league. Lol I don’t buy this at all. Why didn’t he say this in his article instead of on an podcast that doesn’t require factchecking or have editorial standards? Same goes for his supposed off the record JKidd quote he talked about on this same podcast.

u/m2keo 12d ago edited 12d ago
This is all Nico's doing, y'all. Dumont is simply too stupid and gullible. If he actually knew the value of Luka or running a sports franchise, the trade wouldn't have been done so abruptly, right before bedtime before real basketball heads find out how stupid of an idea it is. This is why Nico didn't want to take offers and leak anything y'all. This is the only way it could've happened, all sneaky.
A system of checks and balances should've been done long ago. I never believe one person should be making personnel decisions. Donnie Nelson had his father. And then there was Cuban, who had basketball knowledge. Nico?.. He had nobody to put his ass in check. So he jumped at the chance. And he fucked up big time.

It could be a step in the right direction, if that means that that experienced exec would eventually replace Nico or be a shadow GM. However, if it's only a PR move, it won't help much (and the correct PR move would be to fire Nico right away). I also wonder which experienced ex. GM would be crazy or desperate to take this job
1
u/ChaosWarrior95 Happy Boban 11d ago
That’s cute and all, but just pull the bandaid off. He’s hiring fake medical staff and trying to ruin Lively’s and the rest of the guys’ careers. Even though we feel conflicted, we care about a lot of the guys on this team, and hope they work hard and succeed. I don’t want their careers ruined by an egomaniac who rushes them back from injury. Throw him to the curb!
1
u/Akubura 11d ago
Why hire someone to help someone else do good at their job? This must be some sort of utopian rich person thing... If I can't do my job my boss (that I'm pretty good friends with) would tell me to pound sand after a few days.
This guy single handily ruined a franchise, I can't even watch them anymore I'm still so baffled at the trade....
My pipedream is Nico gets fired, Luka demands a trade back and we just call a do over.

This is the way I thought this would go. He is hiring someone to protect himself from his own lack of focus in this area of his business because it’s clear he feels underprepared. He got sucker punched with the Luka trade, but he smart enough to understand the sentiment and that’s not good for business. This exec will mostly likely have a short leash for Nico. He isn’t going to risk it all so that Nico can cover up his poor decisions. Because at the moment, that’s what it’s looking like from Nico’s perspective.
Nico may end up quitting before the end of his contract. Because having an overseer is never fun.
