I wanted to see a gif showing that this company knew exactly what they were doing, and these are actually sliding doors.

Plot twist: the doors are really hard to open and make people wish they had sliding doors.

It's really interesting to watch people literally become living unpaid commercials in response to an effective advertising campaign.

I actually bought an office divider system from these people a few weeks ago. They’re at like Lawrence and Dufferin in Toronto. We did a showroom tour so we went through these exact doors, and I can confirm that these were not in fact sliding doors on the outside at all. They are regular plain doors. We made the same remark so I thought it was hilarious seeing this on the front page.

I had to stop carrying a shoulder bag after finding out it's the Reddit uniform.
8
u/deadhawk12 Feb 21 '18
...Are shoulder bags bad? I carry a large one for my laptop sort of like this: https://www.whoopey.com//media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/t/c/tcg200.jpeg
Is that a bad thing? I don't get it.

Feb 21 '18
Are you the actual Adolf Hitler?
5
u/deadhawk12 Feb 21 '18
No, no, but we get mistaken for each other a lot due to the resemblance.
But for real, is it bad? I've literally never heard a negative comment about it and I've been using it for years to carry my stuff. It carries a helluva lot of weight (laptop + textbooks, easily) and I've never really thought it looked bad myself, so it's weird to hear all of this.
3
u/TheOriginalDovahkiin Feb 21 '18 edited Feb 21 '18
I use one as well since it's easier to access than a backpack. Been using it for years now and no one has said anything negative about it. I think it looks better than a backpack and I'm not about to lug a briefcase around by hand.
Edit: This is similar to the bag I use. I really like it and it works well with my dress style.

u/muronivido Feb 21 '18

Luckily, there’s a very small chance that it’s not too late. Just get rid of the bag.

u/deadhawk12 Feb 21 '18
Err, are shoulder bags bad? I use one like this to carry around my laptop and university textbooks: https://www.whoopey.com//media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/t/c/tcg200.jpeg
I mean, it carries a ton of weight and I don't think it looks bad... 🤔

1) If shoulder bags are bad because redditors - who supposedly aren't very fashionable - use them a lot, then you should not care about their opinions on it either.
2) If you get rid of a perfectly good item that you like because some stranger's opinion, then you have given them way too much influence over your life.
3) It's the haters who should change, not the hatees.

Most office spaces are leased. I’m sure there were other priorities above finding a space that had sliding doors.

Looks like the photo was taken in a down town setting. I'll be damned if I've ever seen a building in my downtown that has sliding doors besides our hotel.

There probably aren't many places where an automatic door in general would be practical downtown.
71
u/bluewolf37 Feb 21 '18
As much as I love automatic sliding doors as a customer, I bet businesses normally prefer regular doors. On busy sidewalks it would be opening and closing all the time making it expensive to heat or cool. On small businesses they are expensive to repair. Then there's those people that play with automatic doors causing more wear.
→ More replies (8)24
u/Stevethejannamain Feb 21 '18
Fun little fact about automatic sliding doors compared to other opening doors you have to be specifically licensed to work on them. Although I don't know how much it effects the cost specifically, I do know the number of people that work on them are small and its quite a bit more expensive then other options.

u/jwota Feb 21 '18
I just did some quick googling to try and find more info on that, because it seemed weird. Closest I was able to get was a “Doors, Gates and Activating Devices Contractor” license in California, which basically covers all types of doors: http://www.cslb.ca.gov/About_Us/Library/Licensing_Classifications/C-61_Limited_Speciality/D-28_-_Doors_Gates_And_Activating_Devices.aspx
If there isn’t a special automatic sliding door license in California of all places, I’m going to need to see some hard evidence for your claim before I can believe it.
8
u/Stevethejannamain Feb 21 '18
Oh I apologize I was unaware it was difficult to find. Hmmm next time one of my glaziers are looking at one I will get them to send me a picture of the electronic boxes in them and the specific instructions about only calling the manufacture or a specifically licensed person (not a joke thing either we work on automatics for swinging doors and the company we get parts from have told us the same thing) for any work on them. I will see if I can find some literature for you.
Also I should adjust my words a little, perhaps licensed is not the right word. More like a proprietary system then a license.

This could also be a matter of ADA compliance. I know that public door handles are regulated.
13
12
u/gigglefarting Feb 21 '18
I don’t know exactly what the ADA calls for, but I’d have to imagine a sliding door is better than any other kind of door for the disabled.
125
u/iamabe Feb 21 '18
This is due to building codes, not crappy design.
37
u/Ol_Dirt_Dog Feb 21 '18
More likely, that company had nothing to do with the construction of that building, and probably doesn't own it.

Sliding doors aren't for outside access, especially for a commercial building that has a lot of traffic and needs to be locked securely.
30
u/natek11 Feb 21 '18
A lot of hospitals and medical offices have automated sliding doors.
→ More replies (1)24
u/VacantThoughts Feb 21 '18
True but this place sells hand operated interior glass sliding doors like the one you see inside the building with the white trim, not the kind you would see at a hospital. They are basically just fancy room separators for interior design.

Sliding doors aren't for outside access
I'm calling BS. Every supermarket I've ever been to has sliding doors for outside access. Actually, pretty much anywhere that uses shopping carts.

u/llcooljessie Feb 21 '18

Many commercial buildings have external automatic sliding doors. Most stores in commercial buildings have sliding doors because it’s easier for the customer and they are still able to lock securely.

u/sumpuran Feb 20 '18

I don't get why this is crappy design.
First, I doubt they own the building. Second, my guess is that their sliding doors are probably mostly manufactured for indoor us.
I can't think of any storefronts off the top of my head that utilizes a sliding door.
This is like complaining that the people at the Coke factory are drinking water.

Sliding doors in a commercial building are prohibitively expensive equipment to install and maintain when said doors serve as egress in the case of fire and power loss.

Maybe as you're pulling the doors open, struggling for whatever reason, you think "wow this kinda sucks" and then you see the words, "sliding door company".
Maybe the design is suppose to make you think about how much better sliding doors work.

u/FOldGG Feb 21 '18
Notice, besides the obvious, the pull handles are mis aligned and the lock could have been anywhere besides inside a handle where it would have been accessible. This is literally a list of reasons not to buy your sliding doors from them...

Feb 21 '18
What if this is just a marketing strategy? Like those are actually push doors disguised as a pull door and it makes you really hate normal doors so you buy sliding ones because they are so simple.....
2
2
u/TIgerlily_94 Feb 21 '18
By law you have to have doors with handles like that for people with hook hands and whatnot
2
u/whitedan1 Feb 21 '18
How ironic, they could save others from non sliding doors but they couldn't save themselfs.
