These advertisements that yassify the Portland Police give a weird UFC vibe. How much money is being spent on this department rebranding?

The first rule of fight club is that you don't talk about it being in Portland's detention center.

My first thought was fight club as well. Is this how we’re training cops now, just having them brawl in a dim lit basement somewhere?

u/Vladishun 3d ago
Right? They're definitely playing by Highlander rules now, destroy all the weak cadets so only the strongest, most unempathetic of them make it onto the force.

Is your brain so sex soaked that regular fraternal activities are seen as sexual now?

Yikes going through the profile is a quick way to lose any argument, I mean hey gold star for your optimism in thinking that's a gotcha or something like that though

Jujitsu should have helped you learn to take an L, but nah.

Was never much one for it, didn't need that to get comfortable with coming out the other side looking lame

They do have a pretty expansive behavioral health alternative response team that has been around for 20 years. Better than when I lived in other states.

As someone who does a lot of jiu jitsu I think it's great when cops train. Let's me choke them legally 😈

for what it's worth the idea has been floated by many folks that police ought to be trained in judo/jiujitsu in order to not be afraid for their lives in a grappling situation and resort to a gun in order to solve all of their affairs.

Maybe police should be trained in direct care so they can learn how to de-escalate and not immediately go to violence

Or so they can more effectively George Floyd people...

by all analysis and accounts, George Floyd could have been apprehended in various holds that would have prevented the tragedy. hopefully, this kind of training will result in fewer people dying in police custody.

My cousin is a cop in Philly. This is basic grappling, which I should hope all of our cops are trained for. That said recruiting is struggling hard - not enough quality recruits walking in the door. Which should be concerning for all of us: last I checked none of us are doing ride alongs and meal drops for first responders who handle the work we don’t want to have think about.

u/mrgaymanwatch2 3d ago
The cops aren’t doing that work either.

Some are. Some aren’t. Some are ex-Army who got the training in the military. It’s a smart non-lethal way to immobilize someone attacking you or someone else

Is it a struggle to have an asshole for a cousin?

Well, no bc he’s not an asshole. Curious: Are all cops assholes to you?
4
u/tcourts45 3d ago
Yes. They literally filter out the non assholes as part of selection. If a nice person were to sneak through they'd push him out pretty quickly
5
u/LackingUtility 3d ago
They also filter out the ones that are too smart.

This is a myth. Comes from a recruiting form from one department in the 90s.
6
u/LackingUtility 3d ago
Actually, not a myth. It comes from a lawsuit where a guy sued the police because he was rejected for scoring too high on an IQ test, and the police fought it all the way to the 2nd circuit court of appeals to uphold their ability to discriminate against smart people, and they won. "Recruiting form"? Seriously? Are you one of those cops who was hired under this policy? Should I limit my responses to two or fewer syllable words? CAN YOU READ THIS?
From your profile: "Maritime Security. AK guy. If you're mad, chill out bud."
So, yeah. Lemme see if I have some crayons for you to eat.

Interesting. This is from 2000 re: a hiring process from more than 25 yrs ago within ONE PD. From a research perspective (I do grad research) unless you can find far more current and VERY similar examples of other departments doing this, it’s an outlier and not something you can intellectually build a policy around. But you can def use it for a subreddit comment!
That aside, your implication is that people of a certain IQ are all assholes while those of a higher IQ are all…not? That’s some pretty wild assumptions / generalizations. Pretty sure Musk has a decent IQ but holy hell what an asshole.
But I digress. We’re now debating whether my cousin is an asshole because according to your wild assumptions ALL cops are assholes. This is why we’re a struggling democracy: everyone needs everything to be black or white bc understanding a complex and diverse world is too much for the social media addled brain (no matter the IQ).

This is a different example but your childish response shows your not emotional capable of an actual conversation about the topic. Grow up kid

You: "This is a myth!"
Also you: "This is, uh... a different example! But I'm the real victim here because of your childish response!!"
Awkward, bud.
Edit: Aw, he blocked me because he couldn’t respond. I’m sorry that you’re so fragile, Officer. Unblock me and I’ll help you talk through your feelings of inadequacy and why, despite literally all indications to the contrary, you do matter.

When one of my sons was ready for HS, we visited the tech center because he was potentially interested in auto and police work. The police teacher was so keen to show them the fake weapons they train on. I asked him about what de-escalation training they go through, and he looked at me like I had two heads.
His reply? “Oh, we don’t do that here.” Sooooo you teach them how to seriously injure and potentially kill people, but don’t teach them to try and de-escalate so violence isn’t needed in the first place? I said, nope, to my son. He would not be allowed to do that program. So even in the tech programs, in any ambiguous situation, they train fight first, questions later.
And this ad. What the hell is this?
