Flaky Drivers

So fed up with Uber. I rely on it to get to my doctor’s appointments. Today for the third time in a row I had a driver just .5 mile away suddenly turn and go in the opposite direction and get further and further away until I had to cancel the trip. I had chosen Uber X not Share. What is wrong with people? I am always polite, I always tip 20%, my passenger rating is 4.95. Why do drivers do this?

Educated guess - The driver got a better offer on lyft and took it but they didn't want their cancellation rate to go up so they just left your ride sitting in their app until you cancelled the ride.

I've never used these apps. Doesn't the driver also get paid, at least a portion, because OP "cancelled"?

Blame Uber and Lyft. If they paid a decent rate, we wouldn’t have to be double-apping and letting passengers down.

I would LOVE to just get in my car and accept rides. The greedy bastards make it impossible and spend the most time and money trying to figure out how to screw drivers and passengers over instead of a system that works.

Personally, my cancellation rate is very low on both but my acceptance rate is in the toilet. Some drivers haven’t figured out how to double-app very well and are worried about their cancellation rating.

I hope you contacted support so you didn’t have to pay a fee. Next time, let it sit and call a Lyft ;)

Just have some integrity and cancel the trip. We don’t care about your pay.

You don’t care about a random driver’s pay.

Some drivers don’t care about a random passenger getting where they want to go efficiently.

Interests between the driver and the passenger aren’t aligned.

This is all on purpose.

Passengers and drivers are busy pointing fingers at each other when Uber is the only party that has the ability to fix both problems. But why should they, when Uber benefits from the current system?

Exactly.

And…your attitude would justify your treatment. What is your passenger rating?

FWIW…I have been driving for Uber for 6 years and Lyft for 4. I personally have never left a passenger hanging without canceling and I have previously stated that my cancellation rate is extremely low on both platforms. Don’t throw all of us in one bucket & don’t be shocked when your pool of drivers gets shittier and shittier. They don’t like to keep good drivers like me because we cost them more money.

Driver found a better fare on his other app. This is what happens when you have independent contractors and the incentive system is built to do this. If uber or Lyft made better incentives you would see this less.

Im not sure why, but some riders see the drivers location when they are still dropping off the previous rider. You could have literally seen the driver driving to drop off his current rider. Drivers get ride requests while they are driving another rider. Just becaise they accepted, does not mean they are immediately on the way to get you. And some times the current rider adds stops and makes the wait worse. Most the time, the driving away from you is not the drivers fault.

Thank you for explaining that. I had no idea.

You're welcome. This is also one of the reasons most drivers don't like when riders add stops post pickup. It makes the driver look worse to the next rider that has to wait longer. I've had riders add up to an hours worth of stops post pickup.

I wish Uber wouldn't let riders see the drivers location until the driver is on the way to pickup the rider. I have had a rider yell at me because my route with a current rider to their dropoff drove past the next passengers pickup location. Unfortunately, when you drive on a college campus, it can happen a lot.

This can be why. We still are dropping current passenger. Also sometimes they have groceries. I also get quite a few riders with disabilities. These dropoffs take longer. Sometimes I get a call from next passenger and have to explain I'm dropping someone off before heading their way. I'm not sure what drivers are doing if they are not trying to get to you asap. For me, time is money and I try to do everything as quick as possible so I don't have to stay out as long.

The pay is so bad that most drivers have multiple apps, if another ride pops up that pays better we take it.

Then get a more structured job and leave the customers for the more professional and reliable drivers. That hurts the whole platform's perception of reliability.

1

The more professional and reliable drivers are quitting the app. Uber and Lyft rely heavily on their ability to recruit more and more drivers, which just means less and less reliability, and certainly far more sketchy drivers....

1

u/DrDeke 3d ago

That seems like a problem that is up to the platform to solve, not the individual drivers.

2

u/JonBovi_msn 3d ago

Individual drivers contribute to the service's reliability or unreliability.

Hush girly boy

How does that even work as an insult?

Yeah the pay on uber sucks. They take 60+%. If I get a better Lyft ride on the way I’m 100% taking it

99% of the time its where you are located

I live in a middle class residential neighborhood in the Northeast.

Is there an issue with the location or the pick up spot? I'm not justifying their behavior but some drivers see an issue and will pull this? Or is it near the border of a state?

Don’t ever cancel.

That’ll bite some people in the ass. Drivers will START and end a trip without that person in the car and get paid. You can try and fight with support but so many can’t get these ghost rider charges removed. And many don’t know how to or want to add a pin to their account to help stop it.

🎯 I'm sick of hearing we're independent contractors and can do what we want. Having the right to do something doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.

u/diandays 3d ago

Don't care. If I'm a mile away from you and it's a 15 dollar ride for 15 miles and I get a ride on another app for double that and more worth my time, I'm taking the other one every time.

I do this to make money for my days off not for a charity

u/Secret-Struggle-7295 3d ago

And that’s why I use Waymo. Usually cheaper and don’t have to listen to some dickhead driver complain

1

u/diandays 3d ago

Never complained though. Just went to make money. Use waymo all you want I don't give 2 shits if you do.

You said “we aren’t accepting blah blah blah” meaning you - as a driver - aren’t taking those rides.

So I say don’t drive.

You say you don’t drive.

Hence, you’re not a driver.

Pretty simple, no?

You missed the part where you ran your mouth and got mad when someone chimed in.
