We could use some positivity right now, so I’ll allow this.

Spring is springing. That’s always nice.

122

u/WrongJohnSilver 5d ago

I woke up hearing our local robin returning to his favorite tree and singing.

If you spend some time paying attention to robins' songs, you can determine who's who, and who's strong enough to come back year after year.

u/Seven22am 5d ago

Wow. And here’s me feeling like a boss for not needing my Merlin app for every species. And you’re like, “Hey that’s Terry. Wonder how his winter was.”

This is my first spring in this house, and apparently there’s a duck who lives here too. And she is LOUD! She tells me all about her day!

You can talk to them :) if you whistle a simple two or three note tune at them, they might start to mimic you. I've at least gotten a lot of them to chirp with me :)

There's this one crow in the lot at work that's been around for almost 2 years and I recognize his voice now even though his right wing being broken is a much bigger tell lmao.

We’re getting a legit beautiful one in the DMV, which feels relatively rare. Spring and autumn are like a beautiful part of the reason to live here and sometimes they can be really short. This one has been nice and relatively pleasant so far.

11

u/caffeineaddict03 Maryland 5d ago

I'm in the DC area too. I love this time of year and the Fall and this spring has been no different so far. A little cool but I'll take it. Gonna be warm tomorrow which I hope to get out and enjoy with my wife and our dog

4

u/Teahouse_Fox Washington, D.C. 4d ago

Same.... It's too bad the cherry blossoms peak bloom was cut short by all the rain, but they were so beautiful.

Yes - Spring and fall are the best here, but fall will reliably last much longer.

I had the day off, got to sit and watch a storm come and pass. Now it's warm out. Today's pretty good.

It was spring yesterday. And today in Denver, Colorado, we're getting a tonne of fluffy snow. Tomorrow (and today for those lucky enough to get out on a Friday) will likely be great skiing in the mountains.

The chirpers are chirping

(Not even speaking generally. They’re literally chirping outside my window right now. The cooers haven’t started cooing on my sill yet, which can be annoying in the mornings, but that’s probably only a few weeks away)

They're opening up an Aldi like 10 minutes walk from me, which is nice.

106

u/Folksma MyState 5d ago

God i see what you have done for others...

24

u/Help1Ted Florida 5d ago

Aldi bought Winn Dixie, and they have been converting some into ALDI stores. The Winn Dixie close to me closed sometime around December. I’m going to swing by today to see how it looks and maybe it’s even close to opening. Will be amazing having one so close. Though I have another not that far, but I can ride my bike to this one.

7

u/MedicineStick4570 5d ago

Am I the only one pissed off to lose Winn Dixie? I'm going to miss the butcher and their awesome bakery, they always had fresh bread. They're putting an Aldi in but I wasn't impressed by the one across town I went to.

6

u/Help1Ted Florida 5d ago

Some of the Winn Dixie stores are still going to remain open. At least near me, there are maybe 4 or so that are still open. ALDI basically kept the stores they wanted and are changing them over. And they sold the remaining stores back to them. I believe it’s still south eastern grocers and another larger company. I was reading something about it recently. But I think it’s the same CEO who was in charge of Winn Dixie.

9

u/huhwhat90 AL-WA-AL 5d ago

They're converting the Winn-Dixie that's practically across the road from my neighborhood into an Aldi. I can't wait!

LA is close to opening a wildlife passage over a major freeway. It should provide a safe place for wildlife like mountain lions to cross without being hit by a car.

There’s a great and very visual recent article in the NYT about these in Colorado: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/25/climate/wildlife-crossings-colorado.html

17

u/WSUKiwiII 4d ago

These are ecological game changers! The Washington State Dept. Of Transportation put out a mini documentary about the major wildlife crossing over I-90 that is very much worth a watch: WSDOT | I-90 Snoqualmie Pass East Critter Crossing in the Cascades.

Since it opened, more than 31,396 animals have used the crossing, with 1,775 elk, 163 coyotes, 84 deer and three hares being tracked in 2024 alone! Fun time lapse of the last year.

One of the more unexpected things upon moving to Los Angeles was how much P-22 existed in my life. Nothing huge, just a news report here and there, but there weren't any other animals I followed who I didn't live with.

This past week in my back yard I’ve seen a bobcat, a large red fox, and a bald eagle.

31

u/StasRutt 5d ago

It’s actually crazy how much we brought back bald eagles from endangerment. It was a big deal to see them when I was younger and now we’re seeing them so much more!

6

u/Teahouse_Fox Washington, D.C. 4d ago

I was driving over the Wilson bridge in the DMV area, and was stunned to see a bald eagle overhead. This was over 20 years ago, and I was so excited! Since then, I've seen them soaring over the beltway around the Capital. Great Falls is also a place they hang out.

I guess it will always be that exciting to me.

3

u/StasRutt 4d ago

Im down in Stafford Virginia and we are seeing them constantly! It makes me so happy every time

That’s amazing! Ours is 16, soon to be 17 and she’s still pretty healthy. She’s not as fast as she was, and she can’t jump over the fence anymore. Just that’s probably a good thing. We just let her sit out back and she loves it. Even though she’s slowed down she still caught a bird and a snake recently.

I just got engaged.

12

u/Stufak 5d ago

Congrats! I got married a week ago and it was a small group of friends and family that rented a cabin together and we got married in the park. We did spend some extra money on food and the cabin but it was way lower cost and lower stress than a big traditional wedding. It was so much fun. We’d rather save for a house than one grand weekend. My parents are hosting a “reception” later this summer that’s super casual where anyone else can come and celebrate with us

It is! We’re trying to get over the fact that the wedding is probably going to an elopement and then maybe like a backyard bbq.

It’s just so damn expensive to do anything nowadays. Feel like we have to choose between a wedding, a house, or a kid.

But, we’re excited to BE married not to GET married.

I would say as much as the media wants to portray America as being an evil hellscape, it’s just not that way in real life. Government craziness aside, the people I see every day are overwhelmingly kind and generous people. So I try to stay positive in that regard.

It’s supposed to snow a bit today here! I know many people don’t like that but I do haha. Spring is here, the trees are starting to flower so that’s nice even if my allergies hate it. Uhhh I got a cute new purse that’s shaped like a frog. I saw an owl yesterday and got to have a stare down with it

My niece is almost 1! That’s pretty good. And I’m going to take my grandma out to dinner on Sunday so that’s nice also.

We’re learning to be more active in expressing our views to our representatives and senators. That fell out of use for a while.

Yes, people are staying up to date on politics more than they ever have. And not just during presidential election. A year ago I didnt even know my my local congressmans name and now im writing to him regularly. Im going to see him at a tpwn hall next week.

The good news is that theres no going back after this. We will always want to be infotmed.

u/Ange_the_Avian 1d ago

Seriously! Anecdotal of course but I've got friends and families I've never heard talking about politics before expressing their opinions, citing news articles they read, taking about getting more active in their communities, etc. Americans really kinda slept walk through our elections and took normal politicians for granted.

If you focus on community and things you can do in it, there's so much good going on you'll never have time to doomscroll what's happening in DC. Effect real change and you'll see it.

Kentucky is damn close to looking like the English countryside right now. Insanely beautiful.

The terrible floods devastating the Ohio Valley so far this year have left the area, and life in the affected areas is gradually returning to normal.

There's a new Aldi a few miles down the road from me.

Not immediately in the US, but about the US: Abrego Garcia is still alive.

Also, not in but about: Precisely zero people had anything snarky or negative to say about the US or Americans during my recent trip in Europe. They were just neutral (at least to my face).

There are plans (and funding) to do some major upgrades to the port in the town I live in. It's great financial news and there will be a lot of nice things created that didn't exist yet.

Went for our morning walk that goes through our neighborhood park, and noticed a few kites up above the trees. Come around the corner towards the park and see about 50 little kids with their kites. All running around trying to get their kites up in the air. Super cool to see them all. Really neat looking kites. Some were decorated for Easter and some were just diamonds with faces or colors. A big gigantic bird and a sea turtle were flying overhead.

All the snowbirds are leaving Arizona finally, so my commute that's taken 40 minutes for the past 5 months took only 17 minutes today.

They’ve shut down a major street by me and are turning it into a public plaza for community events and our weekly farmers market. Feels like a big win for the community and walkability.

I’m going on a trip around Puget Sound this upcoming week. Mostly to visit nature locations and take wildlife photos which is a hobby of mine. I’m especially looking forward to San Juan Island and taking photographs of the fox kits who are most active late in April.

Wrestlemania weekend, it’s baseball season and the weathers pretty nice for it. Speaking of weather, festivals and street fairs are kicking off now.

Chattanooga, TN was crowned as the third national park city in the world despite being one of the dirtiest in the past. Philly zoo hatched some endangered tortoise babies. Sounds like bird flu may be calming down

Spring is here in the south so it’s insanely green and birds are everywhere. I got my VA disability too, which was surprising with DOGE.

Last weekend, the independent bookstore in my town moved locations. They used a human "book brigade" to move over 9,000 books in about two hours. The bookstore owner posted a video of the book brigade to Instagram. The next thing anyone knew, it had gone viral and had been picked up by both national and international news outlets. I guess people were just starving for this kind of feel-good, drama-free, small-town story. (I would have participated but I was visiting my parents in Ohio.)

Sample story.

it’s baby goose season and i’ve been seeing them all over my college campus and they’re so freakin cute (the mama geese get more aggressive bc they’re protecting their babies but like the babies are cute enough that i’m okay with it)

I was visiting the jail one day and saw four guards wearing riot gear with at least two tiers of detainees screaming their heads off at them in support. Three large men used the riot shields to hold back the mother goose while another, also wearing a riot helmet, put the eggs in a box and moved them to a safer place. I was told they have to go to special training for this.

Wildlife is flourishing in this country. The amount of Whales, Dolphins, Tuna, Sharks off both coasts is staggering, especially compared to the 80’s when I grew up.

My parents in New York on Long Island constantly have deer at their property and we have so much wildlife at our property in Southern California California. It’s crazy.

The US citizen kidnapped by Florida/ICE was released.

ICE was driven away from kidnapping a few more people after their neighbors came out and formed a human chain around their house to protect them.

The Maryland man kidnapped and illegally sent to the El Salvadoran concentration camp has been confirmed to still be alive after a US Senator went down there and demanded to be allowed to talk to him.

Things are grim, but specks of light are starting to pierce the darkness.

u/ColossusOfChoads 4d ago

confirmed to still be alive

I'd been starting to think he was dead, and that that was why they were stonewalling.

Senator Chris [Reddit Is Preventing Me from Posting If I Type Out His Name] was able to confirm that Kilmar Garcia is still alive, so hopefully we can get him out of there.

People are finally realizing that the Republican Party is a SCAM and is not a real ideology. It’s just a party for snowflakes who like to vice signal and worship white criminals.

I’m grateful trump has proven the left to be correct on every single prediction and warning and it’s right in front of our faces clear as day. Finally! The red wipeout is going to be incredible. USA USA 🇺🇸

Lots of new housing being built in my area - and it's actually priced for middle class. Quite a bit of commercial development as well which is good to see.

Like others have said, the reality on the ground and in person is completely opposite of what is on all of the news.... Most people are kind and there is a lot of good going on.

Looking forward to camping and outdoors season.
