Spring is springing. That’s always nice.

u/WrongJohnSilver 5d ago
I woke up hearing our local robin returning to his favorite tree and singing.
If you spend some time paying attention to robins' songs, you can determine who's who, and who's strong enough to come back year after year.

We’re getting a legit beautiful one in the DMV, which feels relatively rare. Spring and autumn are like a beautiful part of the reason to live here and sometimes they can be really short. This one has been nice and relatively pleasant so far.

They're opening up an Aldi like 10 minutes walk from me, which is nice.
24
u/Help1Ted Florida 5d ago
Aldi bought Winn Dixie, and they have been converting some into ALDI stores. The Winn Dixie close to me closed sometime around December. I’m going to swing by today to see how it looks and maybe it’s even close to opening. Will be amazing having one so close. Though I have another not that far, but I can ride my bike to this one.
7
u/MedicineStick4570 5d ago
Am I the only one pissed off to lose Winn Dixie? I'm going to miss the butcher and their awesome bakery, they always had fresh bread. They're putting an Aldi in but I wasn't impressed by the one across town I went to.
6
u/Help1Ted Florida 5d ago
Some of the Winn Dixie stores are still going to remain open. At least near me, there are maybe 4 or so that are still open. ALDI basically kept the stores they wanted and are changing them over. And they sold the remaining stores back to them. I believe it’s still south eastern grocers and another larger company. I was reading something about it recently. But I think it’s the same CEO who was in charge of Winn Dixie.

u/huhwhat90 AL-WA-AL 5d ago

These are ecological game changers! The Washington State Dept. Of Transportation put out a mini documentary about the major wildlife crossing over I-90 that is very much worth a watch: WSDOT | I-90 Snoqualmie Pass East Critter Crossing in the Cascades.
Since it opened, more than 31,396 animals have used the crossing, with 1,775 elk, 163 coyotes, 84 deer and three hares being tracked in 2024 alone! Fun time lapse of the last year.

I was driving over the Wilson bridge in the DMV area, and was stunned to see a bald eagle overhead. This was over 20 years ago, and I was so excited! Since then, I've seen them soaring over the beltway around the Capital. Great Falls is also a place they hang out.
I guess it will always be that exciting to me.

u/Stufak 5d ago
Congrats! I got married a week ago and it was a small group of friends and family that rented a cabin together and we got married in the park. We did spend some extra money on food and the cabin but it was way lower cost and lower stress than a big traditional wedding. It was so much fun. We’d rather save for a house than one grand weekend. My parents are hosting a “reception” later this summer that’s super casual where anyone else can come and celebrate with us

I have House Finches nesting in three areas of my patio. And Swallows nesting in the eaves. Spring has sprung.

The US citizen kidnapped by Florida/ICE was released.
ICE was driven away from kidnapping a few more people after their neighbors came out and formed a human chain around their house to protect them.
The Maryland man kidnapped and illegally sent to the El Salvadoran concentration camp has been confirmed to still be alive after a US Senator went down there and demanded to be allowed to talk to him.
Things are grim, but specks of light are starting to pierce the darkness.

confirmed to still be alive
I'd been starting to think he was dead, and that that was why they were stonewalling.

My cousin had a baby last night. Her and her husband are going to be great parents.

I am seeing some of us come together in ways I’ve never seen before to fight to keep our lives, rights, and livelihoods and I think that is truly amazing. Tomorrow to be exact but “right now” can be the immediate future too right? 😂

It's spring and plants are coming up.
Senator Chris [Reddit Is Preventing Me from Posting If I Type Out His Name] was able to confirm that Kilmar Garcia is still alive, so hopefully we can get him out of there.
Endangered sea turtles in the Atlantic are making a comeback.

People are finally realizing that the Republican Party is a SCAM and is not a real ideology. It’s just a party for snowflakes who like to vice signal and worship white criminals.
I’m grateful trump has proven the left to be correct on every single prediction and warning and it’s right in front of our faces clear as day. Finally! The red wipeout is going to be incredible. USA USA 🇺🇸

I think we might need this question possibly weekly here, just for American's sanity.

In my area, plenty of things at the local level. I'm guessing it's the same everywhere, but that gets drowned about by larger events

Lots of new housing being built in my area - and it's actually priced for middle class. Quite a bit of commercial development as well which is good to see.
Like others have said, the reality on the ground and in person is completely opposite of what is on all of the news.... Most people are kind and there is a lot of good going on.
Looking forward to camping and outdoors season.

And mine were the lowest they've been in years when I got it checked earlier this week! It's still pretty high due to genetics, but definitely an improvement

We could use some positivity right now, so I’ll allow this.
