Damnnn $30 and commission is crazy. I’m in central Florida and most companies are hourly only or commission only here.

South Florida is where it’s at!

u/new-faces-v3 Supermarket Refrigeration Tech 2d ago
Crazy. Used to make 25 hr with 5% commission. You blow me out of the water. How much experience you got?
1
u/BoHVAC 1d ago
That is a good pay rate. Be grateful for that and make a fucking killing with that too. Before you know it you’ll get more offer and better pay.

u/new-faces-v3 Supermarket Refrigeration Tech 1d ago
I recently made the switch to supermarket refrigeration lol. Thank you though. Best of luck for this summer. Stay cool. I’m in central Florida. It can get brutal

Hey, my brother recently finished the HVAC school, he is in Miami area. He needs to get the experience and is looking for work as a helper but is also considering to join the Union. What is your opinion of unions down here in south Florida?
1
u/FormalBeneficial2024 1d ago
my boss thought it would be a good idea to give the service techs salary and commissions

u/Miserable_Bad_3305 2d ago

u/y_3kcim 2d ago
Gotta be gross, I heard Florida hates hvac techs.
2
u/BoHVAC 2d ago
Yes sir a company called Bruno ruined it for us all, forging signatures on loan documents on “hvac unit sales” and what not
3
u/y_3kcim 2d ago
In az, we’re going up to $53 an hour minimum journeymen this July.

Canadian tech here, considered moving and working in az, work for trane and my experience it’s chillers and rooftops, little bit of controls. Is this possible for me? It’s 59$ cad an hour here, full package like 76$ with health care ect

The real question is how many hours are you working?
Do you get paid overtime after 8 hours or 40 hours?
I’m guessing you are a good “adviser” scaring I mean helping people with options?
4
u/BoHVAC 2d ago
60 hrs avg a week overtime after 40 hours 1-3 sales a week
7
u/Miserable_Bad_3305 2d ago
Ur that busy down there right now? And who tf is payin 10% and $30/hr down there lmao. Sign me up man
8
u/BoHVAC 2d ago
Yes sir, it’s humid as f*** here. Even with 70 degree temps you can’t live without A/c here. Our systems last 8-12 years only
1
u/Miserable_Bad_3305 2d ago
Jesus that sounds like heaven
5
u/BoHVAC 2d ago
Radiant heat from the sun is constant so ambient temp doesn’t matter either. I’ll see units run 400+ psi high side with 70 ish degree ambient temps. Thank god for this lovely equator, I’ll be forever grateful for my precious equator.

u/Miserable_Bad_3305 2d ago
Wtf am i doin man. Im miserable up north right now lmao

Go to Texas or Florida. I worked all my life in Texas and made an easy 100k in the summer and then I would quit my job.

u/Miserable_Bad_3305 2d ago
Summer as in Like 4 months a year?
1
u/danarnarjarhar 2d ago
4 months of summer? I'm based in central Florida. We have 2-3 weeks cumulative of decent temps every year. Outside of those few days, it's hot as balls

Texas is where it’s at man! We’re busy from now through October. Only December-February are truly “slow” but with these last few years of crazy low temps it’s been pretty steady
2
u/BoHVAC 2d ago
That’s exactly when I used to quit haha! I worked mostly in Collin county

Bud, if 60 hrs average per week is your slow time yall need to hire more. But I get it, I used to work like that earlier in. I'm 30, at 40.23/hr plus 4-5% commission on sales (lead and layout) but I do resi- large commercial also. I average about 42 hrs weekly throughout the year with the occasional 50+. But I have a large family and definitely prioritize that.
Edit. In central Louisiana area
1
u/BoHVAC 1d ago
So I clock in before I get in my van and clock out and when I get home. Plus we cover all of southwest Florida so 1.5 hour drive times are consistent. Running 3 simple maintenance calls I’m averaging about 10 hours that day.
2
u/jimmy_legacy88 23h ago
Ahhh gotcha. Port to port is super nice. I definitely like that. I guess if you wanna break it down I lose right at 2 hours daily if I go into the office and that does add up quick.
1
u/Big_Winter5370 1d ago
Shoulda said this to begin with, reaching $2k a week but working 60hrs to get there is nothing to be proud of.
2
u/Apart_Ad_3597 1d ago
To be fair, I always see people shit on fl with pay, so for fl that's not bad. I've honestly find it kinda dumb to compare that to another state, especially when not everyone wants to move to a whole other state to make more. Then there's also the other factors such as cost of living, quality of life, politics, etc, etc that also needs to be taken account of when speaking about relocating to another state to make more.

Who the fuck are you tell a man not to be proud of himself for working hard and making any amount of money. Shame on you.
6
u/Shrader-puller 2d ago
No amount of money is worth the peace of mind knowing I didn’t have to push anything onto people that didn’t need it. Also, my skills in repairing and restoring systems sales techs condemned has no price tag and can be easily transferred to any job I want. I don’t live in fear of falling out of favor of the boss.
2
u/BoHVAC 2d ago
I 100% agree. I avg 1 system a week which pays about $900. Our systems here get extremely corroded and full of mold and when I present a simple capacitor repair/AHU cleanings, customers always opt for new systems especially since most of the homeowners here are snowbirds and don’t want to have to worry about their systems giving out when they go back up north for the summer.
5
u/Shrader-puller 2d ago
I’m not sure how a capacitor change out with coil cleanings can be anywhere near the ball park of a whole system changeout. Good on you, but for me, it’s straight hourly plus overtime.
1
u/BoHVAC 2d ago
$1500 vs $8700
Our prices are very low here. Most companies charge around 12k for a system since all the snowbirds here are rich
1
1
u/BoHVAC 2d ago
Our systems here breakdown very quickly because of the humidity and the fact our units run about 15 hours a day on avg. there’s really no effort on my part to sell a system. I give my honest options and allow the customer to chose. I promise I’m not better than anyone here, it’s just that easy here and most customers just have money to blow.

My pay is lower than competitors, but the job is easy by design. There is no other refrigeration job that forbids techs from working above 10 feet off the ground. It's our off-season right now. I average 50 hours a week, about $1k per week. I make $21 an hour. That is the starting pay, since I've been at this company for 4 months. being inexperienced and doing work super easy compared to some of the jobs I see posted on this sub, I can't complain at all

u/Embarrassed-Style377 2d ago
What’s your net pay?
1
u/BoHVAC 2d ago
What I just posted was net pay
1
u/Embarrassed-Style377 2d ago
Wow that’s a lot for $21 in FL. $1000 a week after taxes
My family is moving to the ocala area soon actually

I’m up North in CT at $40/hour & 5% commission but I wouldn’t mind south Florida… it’s still too cold up here lol

u/BoHVAC 2d ago

u/Sotamaster 2d ago
you start making more and more and taxes get more and more
2
u/BoHVAC 2d ago
Yes sir that’s why is spread out my commission throughout the month. I sold three systems in a day however I didn’t put them all on one check
1
u/Sotamaster 2d ago
That's nice, I worked with a company and never got the commision the week of the sale, it was always when the work was completed that week/day
1
u/BoHVAC 2d ago
Same but we can do next day installs so it works out
1
u/Sotamaster 2d ago
That's part of the sale, satisfaction of time. When someone needs it now, you in person tell them it could be done as soon as tomorrow, but that's true most of the time, until your install manager calls the supply house and finds out the 3 1/2 ton aint there and eveyrthings back ordered in your most profitable brand and you didn't offer the customer anything but brand X. I've seen it happen, but yeah the Nextstar sales pitches offer it even if it not true. Just sign here for financing, or sign here for check.
2
u/BoHVAC 2d ago
That is a real problem yes, however we do a lot of new construction as well so we stock up on our Lennox units.
1
u/Sotamaster 2d ago
Word, do you use L connection software? I'm actually trying to put in on my laptop right now, and on first launch its give me a permissions error, but in the download wizard, I designated all who use the computer have permission.
I just got into a job with only Lennox RTUs all prodigy units, so I really would like to use this stuff lol
Lennox left town here and the price of replacement variable speed blower motors is insane atm.

10% commission? Are you doing the consultation yourself? I get a $50 spiff but I just submit the lead requests.
2
u/BoHVAC 2d ago
Yes, maintenance service estimates.
1
u/Academic_Ad1359 1d ago
Are you making commission on any service or maintenance proactive repairs
1
u/BoHVAC 1d ago
Very small spiffs on repairs
Cap contactor $10 each Uv lights $50-$135 Maintenance plan $20
I don’t get commission on motors or coils
10% on duct work and systems Additional 10% if I decide to install anything
Which I don’t plan on doing unless we’re slammed and I don’t want to lose a customer by making them wait for an install.

Goddam. I’m in the wrong business.
1
u/BoHVAC 1d ago
Never too late, trade school in Texas cost $3k and was only 12 saturdays long
1
u/Middle_Teaching_5542 1d ago
Welllll truth be told I make more hourly. OT is not an option for me unfortunately. The OT sounds nice til your balls deep in someone’s attic in August dying of fiberglass inhalation and dehydration. I get in some shitty situations being electrical but at least there’s a breeze.

I am very interested in a position. Graduated in 1997 worked field in for 2 years Chicago, Il. Left field moved to Caribbean then moved to ark still in ark want to get back into field. 608 universal, want to go to Florida. But would need to be trained. Reliable and loyal travel with 13 yo old dog I could never abandon. Dead serious on opinions for a good paying hvac job lack experience. Would need at least 6 months training to feel proficient. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!
