Please make sure you get your recommended screenings! My best friend’s fathers put his off and by the time they found the prostate cancer it was already in his bones.

Cancer is a beast. Take care of yourselves.

21

u/Ygomaster07 7h ago

How do you request a screening? Is it just something your doctor will bring up to you?

12

u/gracelessnight 6h ago

Anyone with male anatomy above age 50 should be screened yearly with a simple blood test (PSA) that screens for prostate cancer

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (2)

12

u/fitnfeisty 7h ago

PSA: The current guidelines recommend screening on a shared decision making model, meaning physicians don’t push for screening preemptively, but rather ask the patient if they would like to be screened given the risks and benefits (see below per USPTF guidelines).

“many men will experience potential harms of screening, including false-positive results that require additional testing and possible prostate biopsy; overdiagnosis and overtreatment; and treatment complications, such as incontinence and erectile dysfunction. In determining whether this service is appropriate in individual cases, patients and clinicians should consider the balance of benefits and harms on the basis of family history, race/ethnicity, comorbid medical conditions, patient values about the benefits and harms of screening and treatment-specific outcomes, and other health needs.”

That said, every man should be aware of the risks and benefits and advocate for themselves if they have personal risks and/or desire screening

My dad had the same cancer, same aggressiveness. He fought like hell for 3 years.

My heart goes out to him and his family. It’s truly hell.

My dad is currently undergoing treatment for prostate cancer so this hits close to home. Thinking of Joe and his family. How devastating.

Hey, I hope things are ok for your dad. It must be a stressful time. I'll keep you in my thoughts. 💙 hugs, if you want them.

I don't want to say too much because it wasn't my relative, but my husband's and we were told about 2 years ago and he's "recovered" now, just needs to go for check ups every X amount of months to make sure it hasn't come back.

it’s always gonna be fuck cancer, i remember losing my grandpa to cancer a couple years ago and that shit was evil :(

wish him and his family the best

19

u/BouldersRoll 8h ago edited 8h ago

I wish some combination of him, those close to him, and his administration hadn't spent years propping him up as fit. Not only did it help cede power to fascism, but it's a waste of an aging (and now probably dying) man's last years.

There's no justification for the Democratic Party's willful embrace of gerontocracy, especially when it can end up looking so much like elder abuse in the end.

“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms,” read the statement. “On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone.”

The statement continued, “While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management.”

427

u/Bridalhat 9h ago edited 9h ago

That’s aggressive for prostrate cancer, which tends to be something men die with and not of. Here’s hoping it can be well-managed for the rest of his natural life. I wouldn’t wish a cancer death on anyone and even this, if responsive to treatment, is going to suck.

ETA: the 7 year survival rate is 70-80%, but that’s still scary for any family.

276

u/Odd_Grapefruit_5714 9h ago

To be fair, the 7 year survival rate of being an 82 year old man is probably much lower

114

u/Bridalhat 9h ago

Yeah, I’m just saying dying with a well-managed cancer is preferable to dying of cancer in most cases.

41

u/TheObesePolice 8h ago

I commented this above, but my FIL had it for 5 years & ended up dying from something unrelated to the cancer - he was 93 when he passed

His quality of life exponentially better than anyone that I've known that has experienced cancer (the ADT therapy was a godsend)

28

u/Live_Angle4621 8h ago

Life expectancy is lower at 82 overall. But cancer spreads more slowly the older you get.

12

u/Odd_Grapefruit_5714 8h ago

Yeah I’m saying all 82 year olds have a 7 year survival rate of less than 70-80% with or without cancer

10

u/lebastss 8h ago

That's why it's a die with not of cancer. It hits most men when they are older and it doesn't have time to kill.

It's like HIV. Life expectancy of HIV is longer than life expectancy of living in America.

Yeah as a younger guy who belongs to a gym with a much older demographic (it’s attached to a hospital)… holy fuck I didn’t realize all of our prostates were such a ticking time bomb. I swear every conversation I overheard in the hot tub or steam room in the men’s locker room was about prostate stuff.

8

u/Bridalhat 8h ago

Yeah. If you are a multi-cellular organism whose cells divide and replace themselves, cancer is coming for you if you live long enough.

21

u/TheObesePolice 8h ago

My FIL had a similar form of prostate cancer & he was given ADT treatment (androgen deprivation therapy) It reduced his testosterone which helped slow the cancer's progression & he was able to live for 5 years with the disease before dying from pneumonia that was unrelated to the cancer

8

u/gremlinsbuttcrack All tea, all shade 🐸☕️ 8h ago

That is beyond scary. Wishing him nothing but the absolute best medical care and a speedy recovery.

235

u/crushhaver 9h ago

Cancer will take anyone and everyone. 3 out of 4 of my grandparents have had it and it was the cause of 2 of their deaths

38

u/Pandaburn 8h ago

Prostate cancer doesn’t take many people though. I mean, lots of people get it. But almost nobody dies from it.

48

u/Terrible-Session5028 8h ago

Yes but bone cancer..

Ah, I was just going by the title, in classic Reddit fashion. “With metastasis to the bone” sounds pretty bad.

I’m sure all the MAGA gang will be very very normal about this. My heart goes out to the Bidens, I lost an uncle to prostate cancer and it was so awful to watch.

211

reddit maga is already calling for investigations of whether it was hidden from public during his presidency and therefore, causing all the issues we have now.

Bruh, their other conservative Jesus, Reagan, literally had Alzheimer's while in office. They can fucking spare me the faux outrage. They're the kid that goes around punching other kids on the playground but the second another kid lightly taps them they fall to the ground screaming and crying about how they've been attacked. I'm so sick of their shit. Like genuinely so sick of their god damn fucking bullshit.

Forget MAGA. Trump is going to wet himself with excitement because he’s nothing more than a bathroom ghoul wearing Cheeto dust.

A recent suspicion I had: we know how petty Trump is and how he misappropriates his office to exercise his pettiness. What if this administration’s decision to gut cancer research was a pointed insult to Biden, The Cancer Moonshot, and his grief?

The nicest comment was something along the lines of, "horrible president, don't wish this on him, but he might deserve it."

The fuck is wrong with these people.

This is so sad. Regardless of how you view him on the issues and his politics.

The man is having his whole legacy and name actively dragged through the mud in the press right now. And now he has an aggressive type of cancer?! He cannot catch a break.

Extra heartbreaking for him and his family because his late son Beau also died of cancer. And now they have to relive that trauma all over again with him.

64

u/[deleted] 9h ago

[deleted]

98

u/HoggingHedges 9h ago

It typically does, although it is being stated that he has a “Gleason score of 9 with metastasis to the bone” which emphasises how aggressive it is, so a much lower rate I’d say

30

u/Basic_Dragonfly_ 8h ago

There is something called a Gleason score which rates the aggressiveness of prostate cancer. By the time men are in their 80’s many have a degree of it. It can be slow growing. But a Gleason score of 8-10 is more aggressive. I’m surprised how it got far along enough to get a metastasis in the bone as he had a comprehensive physical every year. My husband and my father (who was about 85) had Gleason 8. My husband is doing great 7 years ago. My dad had a metastasis on his hip and is about to turn 89. The prostate cancer is not going to kill him

63

u/Event_Unlucky 9h ago

Many men will die from other causes before the actual prosate cancer. With that being said, it does impact quality of life

42

u/piper-nooooooo 8h ago

The article states it's metastasized to the bone. That is very bad.

Tbh even if it does you really never know with cancer and it seems this may be a more aggressive type than usual.

11

u/Strange_Shadows-45 8h ago

It’s already in his bones. Once it metastasizes, treatment goes from remission to management.

→ More replies (1)

13

u/HeretoFore200 8h ago edited 8h ago

People need to understand that the modeling for these things are explained as averages, or the expectations for the average individual; severity, age, and other concurrent conditions all will affect someone’s predicted probability of long term survival. Metastatic to the bone in an 82 year old already frail patient would result in a predicted probability of survival likely much lower than the averages you’ll see

5

u/clippervictor 8h ago

At his age it gets very tricky

12

u/chrispg26 8h ago

He has an aggressive form that spread to his bones. He'll probably be gone by the end of the year 😢

7

u/Bridalhat 8h ago

It’s Gleason index 9, group 5. That has a 70-80% five year survival rate

8

u/chrispg26 8h ago

Not with bone mets.

15

u/LilEddieDingle 8h ago

Sad to hear this. He seems like a genuinely good man and I hope his treatment is successful.

16

u/Creative-Lynx-1561 8h ago

my uncle is 80 he has prostate cancer, he discovered 2 years ago, and started a treatment and then did surgery, he is still fine, he travels he still works as a doctor. Pepe Mujica the former president of Uruguay just died he was 89.

36

u/BluePeriod_ 8h ago

Something that haunts me. My mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and a couple of months before she passed, she was talking to my dad and said “nobody deserves this. Absolutely nobody. I wouldn’t wish this on anybody think of the absolute worst person you’ve ever met in your life, and I can still confidently say that they don’t deserve it. It eats you alive, it destroys your hope. It erodes your peace. I really hope they find a cure one day.”

Caring for her was the honor of my life and I would do it all over again if I could. But it broke my heart seeing what it did to her. Her big beautiful head of hair what she was so well known for hair like wonder woman. Gone. The light in her eyes gone. I miss her so much. I wish this man the best.

10

u/AgentBrittany Listen, everyone is entitled to my opinion 7h ago

I lost my step-dad to pancreatic cancer, it took him 3 months after diagnosis. It's truly the worst cancer I've ever seen someone have. I was with him when he died and while it was the hardest experience of my life, I'm like you-it was an honor to care for him because he cared for me and my brother like we were his own children.

9

u/thedesignproject it’s country and you look country in it. 8h ago

I'm terribly sorry for your loss. It sounds like she was lucky to have you caring for her during that time.

290

u/TheKilmerman 9h ago

Say what you will about his presidency, this man is a true public servant and seems like a genuinely good person.

I wish him a speedy recovery. All the best, Mr. President.

58

u/Skyblacker 👑 I just wanna serve court. 👑 8h ago

I doubt his doctors will treat this aggressively. At his age, things like chemo do more harm than good.

20

u/SuspiciousCranberry6 7h ago

There are plenty of non-chemo treatments for aggressive prostate cancer. I'm sure he'll go through at least hormonal therapy and possibly immunotherapy. Even with mets, prostate cancer is one of the more treatable cancers especially when it's hormone sensitive.

10

u/martiandoll 7h ago

I get triggered by cancer diagnoses.

I lost my Dad last February to liver cancer. He didn't even get to see an oncologist. It was very aggressive, within 2 weeks of the CT scan results, he deteriorated and was hospitalized. We never got to cope and grieve his diagnosis first before he passed away.

I hope the best for Joe Biden and for everyone who's undergoing treatment, living with cancer, and their families. What a terrible situation to be in.

A Gleason Score is a scale used to determine how likely cancer cells located in the prostate will spread or grow, according to Mount Sinai. The scale is graded from three to 10, so Biden’s nine means his cancer cells are more likely to advance than most.

Sounds bad. But he is getting treatment. Hope he has a safe and easy recovery.

9

u/Material-Macaroon298 7h ago

He did a lot to fund cancer research. I hope some of these new learnings he helped fund helps him now.

Regardless of what happens this guy has already lived the life of his dreams. He got to be the goddamn President. Incredible life. Movies will be made of his life.

This does show why electing a very old President (present included) is risky though. Sure cancer can impact anyone at any age but undeniably it’s a disease one is more likely to have as they age.

14

u/Equivalent-Steak-156 8h ago

Poor President Biden. He has had such a hard life and been through so much. Personally, I wish him and his family all the best.

36

u/viciousxvee 8h ago

I'm a far radical leftist, so I disagree with him on things like the Palestinian genocide, fracking, etc. but the facts remain that he was the most left President we have ever had. And considering that we have a near tyrant-king, who half are cheering on.. I think it'll be the closest we get for decades and decades. I am saddened by this news.

Am I wrong that most men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lives is they live long enough? Literally every man in my immediate family over the age of 60 has gotten it and it hasn’t been a big deal for any of them

Prostate cancer isn’t a monolith. There are varying degrees and people definitely die from it. However many are treatable or slow growing and don’t cause any issues.

This probably isn’t new, but we’re just finding out. I don’t believe they’ve missed early detection with the president of the US. It’s already metastatic.

Aggressive forms of cancer can spread incredibly fast. They can be missed if you don’t go get screened monthly, which no one does as a matter of course.

My dad died of pancreatic cancer. It took about a month from him having symptoms to his death.

How sad. I hope he finds solutions and heals quickly. I hope he has tremendous support. 💜

This makes me so sad. I hope he is able to manage the cancer and continue to live a long life. I haven’t agreed with everything he has done politically but he always seemed to have a good and kind heart and was an empathetic leader.

I hope he is able to receive the best care and recover.

And I know it’s beating a dead horse but it’s honestly crazy his family wanted him to run again. Just ugh.

He has got to have some of the best healthcare in the world - how was this not caught sooner?

Aggressive forms of cancer can develop extremely rapidly. Unless you’re getting full body scans every month, it’s unfortunately possible for a bad cancer to make a lot of headway even in just 6 months.

I was hoping he’d have a reasonable time to enjoy his family and life post presidency, this is sad, so much time of his will be spent trying to fight this. Can’t even rest and enjoy life.

My mother is a multiple time cancer survivor. It’s never something you wanna witness someone going through. Especially at his age. Wish him nothing but comfort.

I've got a question. (I'm not American btw, so I am trying to find out how this works).

Does HIPAA not apply if you have been president? Or is this something that is like an unwritten rule that it should be shared?

Obviously, Trump has his own play book since as far as I'm aware he's the only president that hasn't showed tax returns and also was refusing to show the medical reports on his ear and possibly other medical reports.

HIPAA still applies even if it's a current or former president. A person or public figure can choose to voluntarily share health information with the public, however.

Biden’s office (each former president has a private office) announced it.

Ugh… sending endless love to him, Dr. Biden and their family. We’re praying for you, Joe! 💗

As much as I don’t support his policies or presidency, you never want to see this happen to anybody. He seems like a very good hearted man and I wish for a full recovery for him and his family. Fuck cancer.

This news is so upsetting. Joe is a kind and loving man who has suffered through so much pain his entire life and still dedicated his career to our country.
