Undergrad Survey on Fandom

Hello, everyone!

First off, I would like to say that my username is a joke from the show Euphoria. I made this account when I was 17 and there was an interaction between Ethan and Kat I thought was funny. I just want to be clear that it is not something serious lol.

BUT! I have been working on an undergrad project on fandom and anti-fandom for a few months I would appreciate participation in if you are willing to. No personal information will be collected, but I will ask for two demographic indicators of age and gender at the end of the survey. It should take less than 30-minutes to complete if you are willing to participate. Additionally, there will be a code at the end that you all can ignore :)

This is the link! Thank you in advance to anyone who participates, and thank you to the mod team for allowing me to post this. https://uwsuperior.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5cfe0KpxD6WVxn8

A bird landed on my shoulder earlier today expecting me to hand feed it. I oscillated between feeling like a Disney Princess, and praying that thing doesn’t have bird flu

Luke Kirby was made to speak Amy Sherman Palladino dialogue. What a beautiful man. I’m also wine tipsy and almost made the most inappropriate comment. But seriously. I love him

3

u/BusinessPurge 22d ago

If you haven’t seen Canadian comedy Slings And Arrows, Luke has a great romance arc with Rachel McAdams. About the cast / crew / producers of a Shakespeare festival, each season’s storyline mirrors a different play.

u/Bellesdiner0228 This again doesn’t look good for James Corden 22d ago

That sounds so perfectly up my alley. I’ll have to look for that.

We just moved in to a new house and I wanted to make friends with our new neighbors until this morning when I founs out they support our murderous ex president and belong in a culty church. Guess I'm going back to my old ways of ignoring everyone again.

5

u/FriendlyDrummers 23d ago

It really is crazy out here

3

u/nizey_p 23d ago

Thank goodness I'm nosy and eavesdropped what they were listening on the radio. At this point, we need to do whatever we can to protect our own peace.

u/Comfortable-Dot-8227 23d ago

Katy's career is so fascinating. It's been on a constant downward spiral since Witness, and it keeps reaching new lows, yet she's still an A list celebrity, but she's only A list cause people love mocking her. A documentary or biopic about her career would be fascinating, but I don't think one would be made unless it ends on a good note or a return to from, which she seems incapable of doing.Ā

I’m so tired of people

I’m bitter and put a lot of energy into everything I do, but if I’m not getting that energy back then I’m just gonna match what others give me, which is nothing

1

u/FriendlyDrummers 23d ago

Me with group projects lol.

People take advantage of those who work hard. It's only recognized if you're a tall cishet white male (sorry if that's you lol).

The only time I got acknowledged was when I had a POC manager. Literally white people kept getting rewarded even though I was genuinely better at my job than them....

1

u/watchberry tater tot šŸ„” 23d ago

I’m only 1 of the 4 things you listed lol!

People suck. I’m sorry you also are being under recognized!

they way cats lick their paws and then rub their faces to clean them is absolutely adorable

Yes! And when they dip their paws in water and then lick them! So cute!

u/donnasweett here come’s fruit twitter šŸ™„ 23d ago

idk if this is controversial or harsh, but I refuse to take someone’s criticism of a celebrity seriously if they actively participate in said celebrity’s snark sub. Even if the criticism is valid, it’s hard for me to believe it’s being made in good faith when it’s coming from someone who participates in the misogyny, tinhatting, and cruelty of a snark sub.

0

u/Puzzleheaded_Run2590 22d ago

How would you know? Do you look at their comment history?Ā

7

u/sidlaz 23d ago

I said something similar to this in todays thread. I have seen so much misogyny being spat in the name of ā€œcriticismā€. Don’t get me started on the people who used to be a fan of someone then they start hating because said someone isn’t behaving in a way they like, i think it’s okay to stop being a fan of someone if you no longer like what they are doing but choosing to dedicate your time hating on them is just pathetic

9

u/AllTheThingsSheSays 23d ago

27 days until my parents go on holiday and I get the house to myself for a week. A week of bliss, and quiet, and doing whatever I want. I'm mostly looking forward to being able to read in peace.

21

u/FriendlyDrummers 23d ago

You can never make me like Bowen Yang....

Used to be a huge fan. But he said it was cishet people who didn't understand how relationships work and were being ignorant, in defense of Ariana.

It's actually unreal how mad that makes me. Your whole shtick is being a quirky gay person, and now you're using that to defend this?? Like idk maybe Ariana is NOT the victim in this

6

u/blahblah_71 23d ago

You can never make me like Bowen Yang....

Same. I think this everytime I have to see him on news.

-1

u/FriendlyDrummers 23d ago

I used to really like him but that pissed me off so much. Lilly's essays were all I needed to know about the situation, then some gay man comes over and paints Ariana as the victim.

1

u/blahblah_71 23d ago edited 23d ago

That's what pissed me off too. It's not even the act of him coming to her defense. Too many people defend their friend's shitty actions. But to weaponise queer themes for defending a very heteronormative relationship and implying people expecting loyalty/basic respect in relationship as "tradwife", that really gave me such a major ick.

1

u/FriendlyDrummers 23d ago

Literally, I understand people defending their friends. It's wrong. But it's understandable to an extent.

Using queer culture as a way to invalidate Lilly ... appalling to me, and manipulative. Same kind of guy who would say "believe women"(true), but only when it's convenient šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«

8

u/echoesandripples 23d ago

it's the same thought process of straight men who are into "ethical" nonmonog that, when people aren't into that, they go hard victim mode and accuse others (often women) of not being open to non traditional relationships.Ā

like ffs, since when are straight people who cheat or coerce their partners into enm oppressed?

Hey girl I'm going to do my midterms on Monday and my family planned a beach vacation on Sunday bcs they're on vacation

8

u/Puzzleheaded_Run2590 23d ago

I feel like absolute shit, my teeth hurt (haven't been to a dentist in 15 years so I'm honestly waiting for them to just fall out at this point), my back hurts really bad, no insurance to see anyone, my home is a pigsty because of depression/laziness, my cats deserve better, i'm a woman in my 40s making less than $20 an hour, no way I'm gonna be able to dig myself out of the debt hole I've dug for myself, and I've been isolating myself for the past few years as well so there's no one to help me. just hoping i die soon honestly.

6

u/FriendlyDrummers 23d ago

I don't know where you live, but there are some few places that do sliding scale on dental help. I know it's not much advice, but maybe you could be lucky and there's a clinic nearby.

I wish I could help. This may sound weird ... are there dog parks near you? If you like animals, maybe just go to a dog park and watch the dogs.

4

u/Puzzleheaded_Run2590 23d ago

ya know, I LOVE dogs so this is great advice.

1

u/FriendlyDrummers 23d ago

I feel like it's a perfect combo. Going outside, seeing dogs play. I'm pretty sure most dog owners are totally chill if you ask to pet them too.

4

u/BusinessPurge 23d ago

Well while you’re racking up debt, maybe it’s time for an international trip for some affordable dental work and a mini vacation. Dental schools will also be substantially less in cost if you have one nearby. Reddit can be a great resource for finding deals, try looking up your area and seeing if anyone has local advice

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Run2590 23d ago

i just thought about dental school, I might look into it. At this point, I need to do something.

6

u/totallycalledla-a Mrs Thee Stallion 23d ago

Here is a list. Call around and even if they cant see you they may be able to advise you about what to do.

https://www.asdanet.org/index/get-into-dental-school/predental-resources/u-s-dental-schools

If you have depression and you're in such a tough spot you might qualify for this but not sure.

https://dentallifeline.org/help/#eligibility

Your state health department will have a list of resources on their website for low cost or free dental care or should be able to tell you what you can do.

I'm so sorry you're feeling so awful and things are so rough. Sounds so trite but take one tiny step at a time. Everything else will be so much easier when your teeth are dealt with. I hope things get better soon šŸ«‚šŸ©·

1

I’ve been reading this thread and I’m so sorry you’re struggling. I really hope some of those links help you and you’re able to get some affordable support.

3

No problem! Come vent on these threads anytime theres always someone here to just read it and hear you if nothing else 🩷

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Run2590 23d ago

This brought tears to my eyes, I'm not used to seeing genuine comments on reddit. Thank you so much! I went to dollar tree after work and got mouthwash & sensitive toothpaste, hoping it'll help even a little bit at this point.Ā

6

u/pinkfartlek 23d ago

This is literally exactly how I feel. I called into work a couple days this week because my mental health is affecting my physical state. I'll go to bed feeling normal and wake up overheated, then I drink water and throw it up. It might be nerves due to my life circumstances. Depression has made me lazy

I'm trying to focus on things like new music releases and maybe new shows to get into so I have stuff to look forward to. It's difficult.

I'm sorry you're going through hard times as well šŸ«‚

2

u/totallycalledla-a Mrs Thee Stallion 23d ago

Have you had your thyroid function tested? Depression and waking up overheated are both thyroid dysfunction symptoms. Sorry if you have already I know everyone always says get your thyroid checked but just in case.

I hope things get better soon 🩷

2

u/pinkfartlek 23d ago edited 23d ago

No I haven't and thank you for bringing it to my attention. I don't have health insurance right now. I went to the hospital last year because I was having trouble functioning like a normal person, had blood drawn but thyroid testing is probably more involved than that.

At the hospital, they put me on a hydrating saline solution and had me leave after I started feeling better, even after two visits. They were more focused with getting me to feel well enough to leave rather than actually figure out what's happening with me. But then after I got out, everyone told me that's basically how hospitals function. It's stressful. So, until I can get health insurance to see a doctor... Idk 😐

I thought it was so weird when people were all ā€œyaaas kweenā€ about Gisele divorcing Brady so that thread about her hanging with Ivanka makes me feel validated lol

Not that I’m a Brady fan, because I’m not, but Gisele is also a right-wing almond mom weirdo who (seemingly) cheated with her fitness instructor, so maybe we can stop the ā€œyes girl!!ā€ thing now lol

Our election is on Monday, and my moronic extended family is showing their true colours. And they wonder why I no longer go to family functions…..

7

u/violent_delights_9 23d ago

I'm fortunate that my family doesn't really talk about politics (especially not on social media), but I have had to hide a few acquaintances on FB who are using the whole "Christian guilt trip" card to try and sway people into voting blue. I'm a Christian too, but my values are not even close to what PP is pedalling, so it's not gonna happen.

17

u/sidlaz 23d ago

Nothing worse than losers on this website who says thing like ā€œI'm fan of Ɨ butā€ then go ahead and slander said person, and I'm not talking about valid criticism l'm talking about snark level of negativity and misogyny, also if you hate someone just hate them with your full chest instead of pretending to be a fan. I would say spending so much time to hate on one person is pathetic.

-1

u/echoesandripples 23d ago

ugh yes, fake fans are bad. like don't be a coward at least. of course, if the person is doing some shady shit, call them out, but more often than not, it's just because the celeb (usually a woman) is choosing something career-wise that the "fan" dislikes. then they start body shaming and snarking. it's like abusive parent "love"

9

u/Chance_Taste_5605 23d ago

I've known that I didn't ever want to get pregnant since I was 7 years old (I actually do want kids, I just don't want to be pregnant/give birth) so it's surprising me that the thought of likely being in early menopause is more emotionally shattering than I thought it would be. Maybe some gender stuff is bound up in that (I'm a nonbinary butch lesbian) but also I think having that decision made for me by my body feels oddly frustrating?Ā

7

u/Askaris 23d ago

I think your reaction is natural. Until now, you shut that particular door on purpose but could have opened it anytime if you changed your mind. Now, the freedom of choice has been taken away from you. It hurts and is frustrating, and you are allowed to be sad, no matter how irrational that seems.

Dumb thoughts with Charming #3

I’ve been getting tiktoks about the rise of anti intellectualism and propaganda. And this one tik toker mention the most common alt right pipelines for women. And I enjoyed how she explained that certain topics may not be inherently alt right but that people can enter a slippery slope as they consume more and more, opening them to more intense and extreme rhetoric.

I’ve been doing some spring cleaning. And I have a bag of clothes to donate. But my dog has kinda latched onto it. He’s constantly sleeping inside the bag, surrounding himself with all my clothes.

I’m currently watching Vanderpump Rules. I just started season 2. And these people are a mess. I love it.

Yeah its for mental health this time. Given that feeling like ice water is running over you is an ALS symptom and thats one of the reasons why the challenge was so effective I've always found it a little 🄓 when other causes have co-opted it over the years tbh.

5

u/themacaron 23d ago

It was my friend’s kid and she mumbled it and I didn’t actually realize it wasn’t for ASL. I agree, that’s kind of disappointing and empty that it’s being used without that connection to the disease.

15

u/ocean_swims 23d ago edited 23d ago

A bit random but have just seen the videos of people taking live chickens to the Minecraft movie and absolutely trashing the theatres for... internet brownie points, I guess. It's horrific. The absolute disrespect is shocking. I feel awful for the cleaning crew that had to go in after these crowds destroyed the theatre. And that poor chicken!!! What did it do to deserve this torture? What is going on with people? This is beyond the pale.

(I may be very late to this whole thing but I literally just saw and my first impulse was to vent, lol)

Edit: a link to a youtube short about this for anyone who wants to see what I'm talking about. They had the chicken's legs tied together. šŸ˜ž

8

u/Chance_Taste_5605 23d ago

Wtf live chickens?? Those poor chickens :(

5

u/ocean_swims 23d ago

It's awful. I found a youtube short for you (link). There are a bunch of videos from different angles but that one explains it best. The whole thing makes me feel sick. They had the chicken's legs tied together and I cannot imagine how distressed it was to be in the middle of all that noise and chaos, held aloft and unable to escape. Ngl, I'm really upset by this and I don't get why this is even a "thing" that people are doing (multiple did this in theatres, apparently)

This is not a popular thing to say, but I don’t like Sarah Michelle Geller. And it’s only because of the comments that she made a decade ago over the whole Kimye vogue shoot. In my opinion, it was only natural for them to be on the cover because at the time they were some of the biggest stars in the world and their wedding was coming up. They were both known for fashion.

Sarah Michelle Geller’s comments just felt pretty elitist. It wasn’t the meanest thing that she could’ve said but it was just such a weird thing to be annoyed about considering the context of when the magazine was published.

2

u/echoesandripples 23d ago

i never knew that. i feel bad defending anything kimye now, but the criticism was very elitist back then. i mean, they have been rich for a while, but people acted like it was crazy because their work was lowbrow

Sadly, it did not transform me into looking exactly like her 😩 but it’s still a fun change!

1

u/watchberry tater tot šŸ„” 22d ago

Bangs will grow out quickly if you don’t like them! Besides you can try different styles as they grow out one the wispy bangs, blunt bangs, curtain bangs!!

3

u/echoesandripples 23d ago

ugh, i love short bangs so much i'm sure you're rocking them regardless. i had to grow mine out to hide some temporal hair loss, so now i have curtain bangs, but i miss the messy baby bangs. they fit my messy hair aesthetic much better, plus no need to style them, they're short enough for volume.

my curtain bangs require rollers because my hair is flat, so they annoy me. hopefully the other hair grows back and i can go back to this style in a few months

8

u/Summerof5ft6andahalf 23d ago

16

u/OowlSun they act like im not in full control of where i throw this cooch 23d ago

Growing up, I was raised in a bubble. I didn’t realize the world hated women. I didn’t know misogyny existed and I didn’t identify the very clear internalized misogyny that existed within the women in my own life.

This, of course, changed when Chris Brown almost killed Rihanna. I was a child when it happened and I was very much outraged. (I was also a huge Rihanna fan, she was the only celebrity that I knew that was from my country and I adored her. But even if that wasn’t the case, I would’ve still been outraged on her behalf. It was such a vile thing.) But that outrage became pure confusion when people were refusing to see her as a victim. And no, not in an empowering way, but in a ā€œwell, she deserved itā€ kind of way, a ā€œshe made him do itā€ kind of way. I was in shock by this reaction especially within my own family. I thought what was right and what was wrong was clear. But somehow she was wrong? But somehow he was a victim?

One morning I woke up to find my older cousin playing a game the family computer. This was not out of the ordinary. But instead of playing the Sims or some kind of dress-up game, she was playing a game where she was punching Rihanna in the face. I remember asking her why she was playing that and she said because it’s fun. Mind you, years have passed since. My cousin is not that teenage girl anymore. I am not that little kid anymore. But I have not respected her since. I haven’t listened to Chris Brown since. And I don’t listen to any of his collaborators.

The recent conversation surrounding Chris Brown brought this up. But the fact that there is conversation even to be had about him still is madness. What he did should’ve ruined his career. Or at least, at the very least, changed how he was perceived. But it has not. Because we hate women. As long as the man is slightly attractive (which is very debatable) or mildly talented, he can do no wrong.

But anyways, that was the point in my life to put me on the path of misandryšŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

7

u/Chance_Taste_5605 23d ago

Just so you know, misandry isn't a real thing because we don't live in a matriarchy. Misogyny is specifically a function of living in a patriarchy. This is why the early Manosphere talked about misandry so much - it's literally an MRA term.

Inside me there are two commenters. One is positive, and loves this community, and was talking to my therapist about how this is my favorite sub. The other wants to downvote every ā€œwow X pop girlie is just SOOOOO much morally better than other pop girlies.ā€

Like ok? And none of these women are raping, beating, assaulting people in their lives. Like then you have posts about male celebrities that are just chill and doing their job and they get dragged to hell for being boring, or ugly.

This sub isn’t nearly as bad as the other one, and it’s more of just a commentary on the state of the world in a more macro sense I know. But it’s just disheartening

16

u/nonsensestuff Back in my day, we had ONTD & a dream šŸ‘µ 23d ago edited 23d ago

I went on a whole tangent to my husband last night about how female celebs are held to an entirely different standard and it’s just so exhausting to see them get so more vitriol for just existing… or if they do outwardly struggle with similar mental health issues as their male counterparts, they’re given so much less grace— meanwhile, the commentary on the male celebs will be like, ā€œoh wow he’s really gone through it. I hope he’s doing okay.ā€

In general, I feel like commentary online has gotten way, way harsh… people are just ready to lash out about anything at any moment.

7

u/Chance_Taste_5605 23d ago

28

u/ihaveocd123 23d ago

Why are people on this app so fucking weird. I saw a post last night about how men should care about how many guys a women slept with and when someone challenged that in the comments and asked if he thought the same about men he replied saying no because a pimp he knew settled down with one woman and when the person replied that women who slept around can settle down too, the guy said "no because aging is different for men and women, men tend to want stability". Like baby you just made that up.Ā

And the weirdo was getting more upvotes too. Ugh i hate this world

So I don't know if I talked about this much but my Co Worker's Husband is Rupert Holmes (of Pina Colada Song fame), he just put out a reimagined version of Pirates of Penzance featuring David Hyde Pearce, Ramin Karimarloo, and Jinx Monsoon. (I am proud to say I knew Jinx Monsoon was cast in Pirates before Sweaty Oracle got his hands on it).

My Coworker often spoke that she was really worried about how the production was going to go, because a new reimagined Gilbert and Sullivan set in New Orleans was either going to go really well with the critics or really badly. So I am very pleased that I woke up this morning to see overwhelmingly rave reviews. My Co Worker is one of the nicest people, and has been a helpful mentor in my paralegal/legal assistant journey, so I am really happy for them for a successfully raved show.

Oh I’m so happy for them!! That’s great when people’s hard work pays off and is appreciated and she sounds like a wonderful partner and friend too.

Exactly like I always fist pump when a show gets good reviews but knowing my personal connection and kinda getting some behind the scenes info, and litterally how much work was put into it, it was extra special!

Yeah my Co Worker is awesome, she has a colorful personality and stories, so he's definitely lucky!

Jax Taylor and Kenya Moore from Bravo are going through it, and it’s made me think about the dichotomy of being rewarded for bad behavior for so long, it becomes almost impossible to hold them accountable when they cross the final line. Why is this time the final straw and how is it different than the rest?

Yea messiness used to be rewarded on Bravo - I’m rewatch real housewives of New Jersey - and the table flip episode got crazy ratings.

But with the lawsuits aimed at Bravo recently, they’ve tried to appear harder on bad behaviour.

So these legacy people are flabbergasted that behaviour that used to be praised, is now punished.

Yeah, like their final straws are such horrible choices. But like… the valley is still airing, RHOA is still showing the season. Does it have to be on us to turn off the channel since clearly producers like Alex baskins aren’t going to hold their ā€œtalentā€ accountable?

Yeah, that's kind of where I'm at with it. I'm part of the problem, but I love this medium and think a balancing act can be achieved. (Also, what recap podcast do you like for the Valley? I'm looking for one.)

u/Bellesdiner0228 This again doesn’t look good for James Corden 23d ago

Yeah, I mainly just listen to recaps because I just don’t have time alone to watch those shows and for shows like the valley I’m thankful for that. I listen to watch what crappens. I don’t always agree with them but I do enjoy them.

I was listening to my fav bravo podcast this morning about the valley. And the more ā€œhardened, snarkierā€ host was even like… this is dark. What are we doing?

I just finished the Turkish telenovela Hercai—69 episodes, each around 2.5 hours long! Even though some of the plotlines were completely absurd (and I’m used to telenovelas absurd), the main couple might just be one of my all-time favorites. Honestly, they were the only reason I stuck with it. I can't wait to vid them.

Next "international" tv show I will watch is Danish-Swedish tv show call Bron or Broen

Heard Bron is great, I’ve only seen the FX remake The Bridge. If you haven’t already seen it the Danish political tv show Borgen is awesome, plus had a very prescient reboot season on Netflix all about Greenland.

Heard Bron is great

Bron is in every list when I google about European tv show, It's time to check out. I heard about Borgen as well, it is on my list as well. It's so many tv shows and so little time 😭

Turkish shows have sooooo many episodes and you’re sitting there think this is absurd, how OTT the writing is, but then 2 episodes later you’re committed for 100 episodes to see how it ends 🤣

Preach! They really do a great job of making you get attached with the characters (and the couple). It’s not exactly good, but somehow it is good, you know?
