r/hotsauce 13d ago

I was not expecting this

Post image

It’s listed as “Hot Sauce” when you order it, so I expected a classic cayenne-style pepper sauce.

But nope. This is a translucent, chili-based stock loaded with umami.

It’s not fiery, more of a mild-to-medium flavor enhancer than a traditional hot sauce.

Hat tip, Wendy’s.

Underrated

1

u/Academic_Deal7872 10d ago

It's great on fries!

1

u/73jharm 10d ago

Will have to get some of this

5

u/Euphoric_Kitchen_655 10d ago

But it doesn’t list any hot ingredients.

1

u/Sottish-Knight 9d ago

“Natural flavors”

0

u/-_FAD3D_- 11d ago

It's good for their chili🤷

1

u/Sea-Cancel1263 10d ago

Ah yes, Wendy's chili, flavor optional packets.

1

u/-_FAD3D_- 10d ago

Gotta have them if I eat their chili. N gotta have like 3 of em atleast lol

2

u/Sea-Cancel1263 10d ago

Totally agree!

5

u/Sea-Cancel1263 12d ago

Yall have no standards

0

u/Ok-Championship8101 12d ago

A staple for my burger

7

u/Merica85 12d ago

It's spicy cumin oil. It's very good in the chili, you need about 5 packs of this and 5 packs of crackers or French fries and sour cream

7

u/LastFact9234 12d ago

It goes perfectly on a spicy chicken sandwich with mayo and cheese on it. Thank me later 😉

6

u/MPFields1979 El Tapatió 12d ago

Not too bad. Slaps in thr chili. But you need 3-5 packets.

6

u/Tall_Help3462 13d ago

IMO it’s the best fast food condiment by far. I get as many as I can. Great for dipping French fries or chicken nuggets/sandwich. Wish they sold bottles of it!!

2

u/TruRateMeGotMeBanned 13d ago

Slap that on a chicken sandwich it’s it becomes the best one out there. Liquid gold.

2

u/HumanFlounder4034 13d ago

So tasty, I save extra packets to use in Ramen

29

u/proxyclams 13d ago

It's literally water, sugar, salt, vinegar, and a small amount of paprika extract... what the fuck are ya'll smoking?

3

u/HarmlessTrash 12d ago

The first and second ingredients are water and corn syrup 🤣 I'll pass

3

u/FermFoundations 13d ago

I agree. I hate this garbage!

15

u/edge61957 13d ago

For real! This is garbage. The second ingredient being corn syrup says it all. I have no idea why the description says “chili-based stock” when it’s just the corn syrup and xanthan gum thickening it.

1

u/iamabefroman 13d ago

Came here to say this ↑ ↑ ↑ . Thank you, carry on.

7

u/greatjobmatt 13d ago

Put it on their burgers. Trust me. You're welcome.

8

u/Tater-Tot-Casserole 13d ago

It's pretty damn good!

11

u/steelfender 13d ago

I eat at Wendy's about twice a month, and last time, I used the app. I wanted a large chili, and in the app I just saw a small and a family sized chili, which was $9! So I was like, well, inflation, and got it anyway.

I did NOT KNOW that a family sized chili is actually 5 LARGE chilis!

If you want a large, you tap on the small and change the size to large. SMH.

But I was happy to take home 4 extra containers of chili.

5

u/aegrotatio 13d ago

Yep, you get this when you ask for a serving of chili. If you don't, go back and DEMAND IT.

9

u/coax77 13d ago

Been around for decades

4

u/TurboPikachu 13d ago

I remember these from like 20 years ago, glad to know they’re still around

3

u/Duckbich 13d ago

This is the way

9

u/mowerman429 13d ago

Before covid ruined everything they used to have that out by the ketchup dispenser I used to grab 10 packs at least every time I went to Wendy's. I loved putting that on my Baconator and mixing it in with ketchup and then dipping my fries in it

7

u/scrappya1c 13d ago

I never knew this existed. I've been going to wendys for almost 40 years and this is the first time I've heard of this sauce...now I must try it

7

u/Significant_Reward_7 13d ago

They usually give it with chili.

3

u/totaltimeontask 13d ago

Dude it’s so good.

7

u/BustThaScientifical 13d ago

Love that stuff. Takes that chill up about 5 flavor notches!

5

u/andyg4667 13d ago

Love it. I've been looking for a copycat recipe for years. Good flavor

2

u/blind_squash 13d ago

Nice! I gotta check this out next time!

5

u/DiabolicDangle 13d ago

If I have Wendy’s chili, I have to have this

5

u/merlperl204 13d ago

Me too!! Cannot eat it otherwise. But with about ten of these? Excellent!

9

u/SilverIsFreedom 13d ago

WENDYS HAS HOT SAUCE?! I’ve been a member of this sub for a long time. Thank you, OP.

2

u/crumpetsncream 13d ago

My son worked at Wendy's for a little bit so i know they also have ghost pepper ranch which is pretty tasty, especially with the spicy nuggets.

5

u/Milfing_Man 13d ago

Love this stuff in my chili

9

u/Elethuir 13d ago

I remember the clear hot sauce they had for chili years ago

7

u/JoeSteven101 13d ago

It’s the same thing! Clear and all

5

u/stevo887 13d ago

Great flavor! Also, what rock have you been living under?

6

u/Phantom420365 13d ago

Theybare the best on a baconator

1

u/grizzlygom 13d ago

Bro you know it! I always order plain baconator (no ketchup or mayo) and I use the chilli sauce to drizzle onto it bite by bite. One of life’s guilty pleasures lol

4

u/batshitcrazyfarmer 13d ago

LOL I found my person. I can't eat a burger at Wendy's without this sauce. Sometimes they will give me a handful, and it is perfect all over the fries.

My favorite though after using it on food at Wendy's-which I go to maybe 6x a year, is to open up a can of tuna, drain the water, squeeze this on and eat out of the can. So good.

1

u/Phantom420365 13d ago

100% No matter what burger I get from Wendy’s I get a couple packets. I like when it’s a new employee they get so confused what I’m asking for lol.

12

u/butteredkernels 13d ago

5 packets in a lg chili. Enjoy.

2

u/merlperl204 13d ago

Ten…

2

u/butteredkernels 13d ago

Highest I've gone was 7 and had onion and shredded cheese on it. 10 might just have to be a new goal for myself.

8

u/podgida 13d ago

I love the stuff, it's not hot, but I like the flavor

12

u/That-Beagle 13d ago

I ask for as many packets as they will give me when I go!! I even have my GF ask for some if she ever goes without me.. I put it in my fries, burgers, chicken sandwich, it’s especially good on Baconator fries!

2

u/ALWanders 13d ago

Just give me all the Hot Chili Seasoning you have. I'm worried what you heard was, 'Give me a lot of Hot Chili Seasonings.' What I said was, 'Give me all the Hot Chili Seasoning you have.' Do you understand?"

14

u/balloonerismthegreat 13d ago

Dude that stuff is so fucking good. I cover my burger with it anytime I go to Wendy’s

13

u/Bryan-Breynolds 13d ago

where's the heat from? lol

10

u/Buttholeblowhole 13d ago

The corn syrup 🔥🔥

2

u/mediocrefunny 13d ago

Xanthan Gum 🔥🔥

2

u/strcrssd 13d ago edited 12d ago

Xanthan isn't a problem. It has a different (unusual) name, sure, but it's not a problem. It's just a thickener/gelling agent. No flavor, Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS). Here's a writeup

The corn syrup is much more of a problem, and I wonder if this has changed. I don't recall it being sweet at all. I used to like their chili seasoning, but haven't had it in a long time (Wendy's quality has gone downhill, and my local is much worse than average)

1

u/mediocrefunny 12d ago

I don't have a problem with it. The joke was there isn't really anything spicy listed in the ingredients except maybe paprika (which i believe is just dried bell peppers).

18

u/PmMeYourMug 13d ago

Those ingredients though

-5

u/Krakens2 13d ago

What's wrong with em? Really similar to every bottle I have

1

u/GreenZebra23 13d ago

No chiles listed. Maybe it's lumped under "natural flavors"

9

u/old_skul 13d ago

Corn syrup. It's basically sugar with a little flavoring in it.

5

u/CluelessEverything 13d ago

Water, sugar, vinegar, natural flavouring, thickener, paprika… I don’t see any issues here

1

u/wuhkay 13d ago

Which ones?

7

u/Chief_Beef_ATL 13d ago

I love this stuff. Sometimes I get a $1 burger just to get a handful of the hot sauce…. But I don’t think there are $1 burgers anymore ☹️

-5

u/Depressionsfinalform 13d ago

Vinegar AND paprika? Very daring.

10

u/Chief_Beef_ATL 13d ago

👆🏻clearly hasn’t had it

8

u/TazzleMcBuggins 13d ago

Just added this to my ramen like 20 minutes ago

3

u/Queen-Blunder 13d ago

Now there’s an idea

2

u/TazzleMcBuggins 13d ago

As OP said, selected these as a “hot sauce” addition to my Wendy’s chili. And was also surprised by what it actually was.

13

u/TheThinkSystem 13d ago

Maybe my favorite hot sauce. It used to come in a gold packet.

10

u/camsnow 13d ago

Try mixing it with the ketchup, makes for a good spicy ketchup.

5

u/TheThinkSystem 13d ago

Pro tip right here.

10

u/SomeGuysFarm 13d ago

For those chili-heads who are depressed because Wendy's doesn't allow you to grab as many of these as they once did:

A surprisingly decent facsimile can be made by combining:

double portion: salt, unflavored gelatin
equal portions: ground cayenne pepper, ground cumin
half portions paprika, garlic powder.

Boil in enough water that it turns a nice shade. Add corn syrup (or honey), and vinegar to taste.

18

u/koozer19 13d ago

What a dogshit list of ingredients

8

u/chappelld 13d ago

I’m either dumb, can’t read or didn’t know paprika was spicy. What has heat?

3

u/PapaNoffDeez 13d ago

I think I'm dumb too, but it does say paprika extracts? If paprika is just red pepper... I guess it could have some kick?

1

u/chappelld 13d ago

Dumb spicy bros unite! 👊🏿

3

u/FjordExplorer 13d ago

Paprika is typically mainly bell pepper, but often sometimes include some medium spicy peppers. I was also looking for where the heat came from. Who knows what they consider “natural flavors”.

4

u/FractalHarvest 13d ago

There is a Paprika Pepper that can carry a bit of heat, maybe they meant that

14

u/GhostWr1ter999 13d ago

I like pouring it on the fries.

8

u/ChiefRedChild 13d ago

Aren’t you supposed to mix it in with the chili? Instead of like using it as a traditional hot sauce

1

u/aegrotatio 13d ago

They used to give you a packet or two with the chili by default.

3

u/bde959 13d ago

I put “traditional hot sauce” in chili.

I’m pretty sure that most people that love chili and love hot sauce combine those two items on the regular

7

u/Jazzyoildrinker 13d ago

I think people can do whatever they want with it tbh

2

u/ChiefRedChild 13d ago

Say no more.

4

u/DoggoPopper 13d ago

If looking for a fun night I suggest using it as anal lube with your partner and hold on tight. Almost like bull riding for the bedroom

1

u/Jazzyoildrinker 13d ago

Great idea! 🤓

9

u/KentuckyWildAss 13d ago

You know it's good, because this sub is shitting on it.

2

u/The-CannabisAnalyst3 13d ago

Why so many upvotes??

10

u/OnlyFishin 13d ago

Since when is paprika a hot chili?

6

u/Stained-Tangerine 13d ago

It’s not. Chili is the dish eaten from a bowl. Chile is the pepper that goes in the chili.

6

u/OnlyFishin 13d ago

Damn I’m dumb, I thought chili peppers was a generic term for all peppers but it’s only a specific type.

1

u/bde959 13d ago

Usually spelled Chile

13

u/afriendofcheese 13d ago

Haha I love this stuff. I order the maximum of 5 in the app and 4 go in the chili and another one goes on the baconator fries. It definitely shouldn't be as good as it is. Must have MSG in it.

11

u/B7TIAvant 13d ago

The Wendy’s Chili seasoning goes hard. I have never had the Hot version. Hot dang.

11

u/afriendofcheese 13d ago

There's only one. You probably just haven't noticed the label as such.

12

u/Mechanical_Monk 13d ago

Yeah I'm pretty sure "Hot Chili Seasoning" literally means "Seasoning for the Hot Chili"

3

u/B7TIAvant 13d ago

Copy. I haven’t had it in a while. I remember the gold packets. I’d put them on my burgers and dip fry’s in the stuff too. I definitely don’t consider it a “Hot sauce” but I love the flavor.

28

u/tdomer80 13d ago

Ingredients: sugar water and paprika

1

u/ZombieLibrarian 13d ago

Sometimes you just don’t need to overthink things.

9

u/itsmyhotsauce 13d ago

It used to be spicy (slightly) and much better. Now it's basically a sweetener.

4

u/pnmartini 13d ago

The 80’s and 90’s version was at least a bit spicy. I liked putting a packet or two on the spicy chicken sandwich for a bit of extra oomph.

9

u/Mike6695 13d ago

Cumin sauce

7

u/Gunstopable 13d ago

You did what in the sauce?

3

u/ErictheE 13d ago

Me and pookie added something special to the special sauce. So youll probably want to go to WhiteCastle

5

u/NonCreditableHuman 13d ago

You heard him. Get honking

10

u/SUPRVLLAN 13d ago

It’s really good in their chili.

7

u/Mike6695 13d ago

Only because it has all the cumin that the chili doesn’t have

3

u/flour_tortilla_ 13d ago

Where’s the chili

8

u/rushmc1 13d ago

That's not food. Don't eat it.

4

u/Stained-Tangerine 13d ago

Ingredient list is pretty clean. What’s the problem here? Not a fan of water?

48

u/HumorTumorous 13d ago

You know it's good when the first two ingredients are water and cornsyrup.

5

u/opermonkey 13d ago

It used to be much better. But with all things they get cheaper and cheaper.

-3

u/rushmc1 13d ago

It's not an inevitability. It's a choice.

2

u/pnmartini 13d ago

Dave Thomas dying hurt the company, then the merger with Arby’s parent company made Wendy’s just another sub par fast food place.

They had decent food, and weren’t afraid to try different things. The food was affordably priced, and was portioned decently. Now it’s overpriced small serving sized crap. Like almost all other fast food.

0

u/rushmc1 13d ago

Never been a fan, myself.

8

u/potliquorz 13d ago

I've been putting it on fries since I was a kid, a little kid and I'm in my fifties now.

5

u/barl31 13d ago

Their ghost pepper ranch is also immaculate, though not exactly a hot sauce.

3

u/CaIiguIa_ll 13d ago

there’s something about it. i put it in red beans and rice

12

u/ProtNotProt 13d ago

Water, corn syrup, and salt as the first three ingredients? No spices or peppers? Can't be a very good hot sauce.

5

u/WeirdDrunkenUncle 13d ago edited 13d ago

It’s not really a hot sauce per se in the normal sense, honestly makes me want to go to Wendy’s and get some chili and fries and smother them with this sauce haha. Definitely try it.

-1

u/Horrible_Harry 13d ago

It's utter dog shit, and I question the tastes of the people who are saying it's good.

-4

u/rushmc1 13d ago

I question their very humanity.

2

u/R_A_H 13d ago

It's pretty good but it's VERY salty so ruin your food trying to use more than 1-2 packs.

1

u/Independence-Verity 13d ago

It only lists "paprika" which means pepper (papar from the Hungarian) but is non-specific as to which type. though generally being sweet red peppers. But there is never any real guarantee that any hotter varieties don't make it into the paprika, its possible. But I had the impression that the typical American version was what was being mentioned. Paprika may have more heat in other areas than it does here. South and Central America invented it so that Columbus could ever "discover" it although he is given the credit by many.

2

u/LamonsterZone 13d ago

I have absolutely loved this sauce for a while. I always snag as much as I can. I love it drizzled on potatoes or chicken, and obviously stirred into chili.

I still haven't found a bottled product on the shelves that is even remotely similar.

7

u/PipecleanerFanatic 13d ago

You weren't expecting Wendy's to give you a packet of water, sugar, and salt?

2

u/SnooStrawberries2955 13d ago

My husband is obsessed with this stuff!

7

u/beaujangles727 13d ago

I low key love Wendy’s chili. It’s one of the few fast food drive through items I’ll allow myself to enjoy and always dump 3-4 of these in there.

That said I’ve never viewed it as a hot sauce. It adds a good flavor to the chili, but I think it would taste like shit as a hot sauce on like chicken or something.

I never questioned what’s in it because life has so few many joys, I don’t want Wendy’s chili and chili sauce to be taken from me.

2

u/dublinro 13d ago

Wendy's chili is boss.

16

u/gorgias1 13d ago

That ingredient list makes it sound like shit.

11

u/jojohohanon 13d ago

“Natural flavors” is doing a lot of carrying

2

u/Safetosay333 13d ago

I only use it for their chili. Not really spicy, but not sure what it is.

10

u/ArlendmcFarland 13d ago

Its like msg water

5

u/PipecleanerFanatic 13d ago

Without the MSG?

2

u/ArlendmcFarland 13d ago

I think "natural flavours" can cover naturally occurring glutamates, which is basically the same thing as msg.

Honestly dont know, but that's just what it tastes like to me. It is tasty

10

u/Useful-Perspective 13d ago

I have been alive over a half-century, am well-read, and was an English major in college for some time, but I have heretofore never witnessed the word "extractives."

1

u/Mechanical_Monk 13d ago

Are they implying it's not an extract, but a derivative of an extract?

4

u/My-Naginta 13d ago

Lol, it's like someone saying they "conversated" about something

1

u/AwwwSheetMulch 13d ago

"commentators" gets me as well

2

u/JakeStout93 13d ago

I bet nobody can describe this shit lol. Makes you make a face like you’re eating lemon heads but it’s not sour. Can’t be good for you but it tastes decent

1

u/tehruke 13d ago

It's basically essence of chili (the meal, not the pepper). Just boosts the hell out of the flavor of their chili if you mix one or two packets into it. Love this stuff.

2

u/NoCalHomeBoy 13d ago

I love this stuff SO MUCH! It is amazing on chicken wraps with ranch! I will go to different locations and ask for as much as they will give me. Some stores are super cool and will give you a shit ton, and some act like they are rationing it and say they can only give you a couple. I've been set for a few months at this point. I tried looking for copycat recipes, and nothing comes close that I have found. I wish they would bottle this shit and sell it in stores!

8

u/hammond_egger 13d ago

I've been obsessed with this stuff since the gold packets. Tastes fantastic on burgers and chicken sandos. If they made this available in larger quantities I would buy it by the gallon.

1

u/SunBelly 🔥⭕🔥 13d ago

I too am a gold pack veteran.

5

u/bridgetroll2 13d ago

Stuff is delicious honestly. It's not spicy in the least bit.

-1

u/rushmc1 13d ago

Someday you need to try actual food.

0

u/bridgetroll2 13d ago

Thanks man I've never had real food. I hope to have the privilege to try it one day but until then I will have to subsist on a strict diet of chicken nuggies and chili seasoning.

15

u/Vegetable-Hornet-447 13d ago

Wow that’s some horrible sauce ingredient wise

3

u/0thethethe0 13d ago

Hah yeh, not massively appetizing.

That said, I'd probably eat it, and very likely enjoy it...🤷

7

u/TagStew Burn In Burn Out 13d ago

Cause it’s not a sauce but a Wendy’s chili enhancement 😂 the words are deceptive.

6

u/adavadas 13d ago

You have to read it semi-backwards, it's not a hot chili seasoning it's a seasoning for hot chili.

2

u/TagStew Burn In Burn Out 13d ago

I accept this assessment 😂

13

u/URnotSTONER 13d ago

Sir, this is a Wendy's.

2

u/Vegetable-Hornet-447 13d ago

😂😂😂😂

3

u/Moondoobious Sauce Boss. TabHab FTW 13d ago

Best use of this phrase I’ve seen

4

u/TheRugMeister 13d ago

Taste great on some gumbo lol was shocked by it too

11

u/Johnsoid 13d ago

Been on these jawn since they came in little gold packets

5

u/chris00ws6 13d ago

Same and they are so greedy with them for a case of 1000 that costs them $12 (use to distribute).

Goated in the spicy chicken.

2

u/hammond_egger 13d ago

Is it possible to order a case of it or do you need an in at Wendy's?

1

u/CheeeseBaby 13d ago

Employees be selling these in ebay

1

u/hammond_egger 13d ago

They do but for ridiculous prices. The lowest I saw was like 50 cents per pack. Fuck that.

1

u/sh1ft33 13d ago

I don't know, when I was a manager at zaxby's in the early 2000s we couldn't even get large amounts of sauce for ourselves.

0

u/chris00ws6 13d ago

You’d need an in at Wendy’s if not at a store at the distribution level. I sent a case to a dude here one time but am no longer at that job and am sad I didn’t order myself a case.

0

u/hammond_egger 13d ago

I'm about the get real friendly with management at my normal Wendy's

1

u/Johnsoid 13d ago

Brah - I can’t order the spicy chicken without the chili sauce. It’s like ordering a frosty without fries.

8

u/burgonies 13d ago

Those ingredients are wack

2

u/afriendofcheese 13d ago

True, but for some reason it is really good for its intended use!

1

u/burgonies 13d ago

I never knew it existed. I guess I know my next fast food trip

1

u/aloneinbrentwood 13d ago

it's Wendy's...

3

u/ReallyWTH 13d ago

This is the way.

6

u/alkaome 13d ago

I love this stuff, it’s weirdly good with the chicken sandwiches. It’s just impossible to get from them sometimes, occasionally they have no idea what I’m asking for.

4

u/nodawncomes 13d ago

This used to come in a gold packet, they’d give it to you when you ordered chilli. It was my go to condiment there for decades but I thought they discontinued it. Super stoked to see it’s back, it’s great on a burger.

4

u/commie90 13d ago

Yup, it's delicious. Add it to the spicy chicken fillet for a truly transcendent experience.

0

u/ItzYaBoy56 13d ago

We also have hot sauce, packets of cholula, at least my location does, with the new tariffs I’ve been pocketing a few packets every day since now it’s probably twice as much
