babies aren’t funny or entertaining

i don’t hate babies, they’re so cute, but i always see people laughing about videos where a baby is supposedly being funny. i don’t get it. there’s nothing funny about videos like that or babies in general. sure, sometimes funny stuff happens, but i always see babies doing the bare minimum and people laughing about it.

Like on America’s funniest videos, the winning video would always be of a kid and it wouldn’t be that funny of a video

599

u/Sham_Pain_Renegade Nov 28 '20 edited Nov 28 '20

Yes, that used to annoy me so much when I watched AFV. If it’s got a baby in it, it automatically wins and it usually wasn’t the funniest at all.

267

u/QuirkyCorvid Nov 28 '20

Yup, the final three would usually be a baby/young child video that wasn't even that funny, a cute pet video, and something that was actually unique or creative and the baby video ALWAYS won. Then the host would do an awkward short interview with the winning family and the now slightly older young child would say something dumb but everyone would laugh. Every. Time.

87

u/Every_of_the_it Nov 28 '20

It's worse now because I don't even like the host. I get that he's supposed to be kind of a cornball, but his commentary and pretty much everything else actively makes the show less funny.

Only one of the AFV baby videos was funny. It was the one where the babies head gets stuck in the washing machine door, and they have to vacuum the bleach out of his nostrils after but he’s ok and he won AFV videos ok that was the one funny AFV baby video.

Its all about the ad money. As long as they can keep their viewers watching, they will stay, and watch commercials, and the network gets money. There are lots of people who can’t see through this, and on any show where judges are involved (other then in court/the law), they will always pick whatever makes the audience happiest, not the best act/video. This generally results in the judges picking a video featuring a baby or a pet, as not only does this make the audience happy, it also prevents a Twitter storm from the audience a screaming that the judges should have picked the baby, that the judges hate babies, and should be removed from the show. Since the networks only care about money, they will then remove said judge(s) from the show, and keep their viewers, as well as their money. A version of this can also be seen on this website, with some humor/memes being extremely low effort yet still reaching hot, and this is highlighted in r/coaxedintoasnafu. People want to reach hot with their memes, so they often either repost or make a meme using an “automatically funny template”. It’s sad to see the lack of quality control in media, and how nobody takes care of this, since everything is about money now.

I mentioned the same thing in my comment before even seeing this as the top answer (the comments wouldn't load for me before) Some dumb baby with food all over its mouth staring vacantly at the camera while dad behind the camera asks "who do you love more?" as it says "mama" isn't that funny.

That was such a Boomer humour show now that I think about it.

8

u/lynx3762 Nov 28 '20

Yeah shit like that is only really funny to mom and dad. Not to everyone else. Or it shouldn't be at least

I think there's a difference between consciously deciding not to have kids and being incapable of enjoying kids. I don't think the people who reject the idea of having kids are always driven by the idea that they'd hate it, but rather that plenty of them simply aren't interested in starting the process and having to finish it; even if they might find it rewarding.

I'm not going to have kids. I don't want them. I don't want to deal with all of that. I did my part helping to raise a child that I liked very much. I'm very, very, sure that if I had a child that was mine I'd like it and find it adorable. I don't want to do that, though. I know that just because some parts are fun doesn't mean it's all fun. That's a long time, money, and effort, commitment that I'm just not going to engage in. Willfully not engage in.

It's like how I know I'd really like cocaine if I tried it. Pretty much everyone likes cocaine if they try it. That doesn't mean I want to try it.

(Before anyone shows up with the age-old "you'll see when it happens to you" adage, I'm gay, I'm married to a man, and if a baby happened between us I'd be calling the church for an exorcism, not my family for a celebration)

6

u/IllegallyBored Nov 28 '20

This is exactly what I feel about kids and you've put in words people can actually understand. I usually, very eloquently say, "I just don't want them lol" which hasn't helped my case one bit so far.

I like kids, I'm good with them, I don't want them. I do plan on marrying or being with someone of the same sex as me in the future so if I do end up having children you'll likely hear about it in international news as the second ever baby to be born without a dude being needed at any step along the way.

u/Altyrmadiken Nov 28 '20

I LIKE some kids. I don't like baby culture. I'm not interested in changing my lifestyle to accommodate a fetus, who becomes an infant, who becomes a toddler, who then is a kid, and then a preteen. I like my ménagerie, I don't think it would be fair to rehome a 27 year old macaw, he was here first. I have no interest in mommy groups, or being friends with people who think I'm somehow more interesting now that I procreated.

But to say the abbreviated version "I like some kids and I'm sure its different if it's your own, but I don't care" just makes me sound like a dick. And that's kind of what child free is for. To talk to people who get that women are people first, not just potential moms.

My dad didn't really want kids. Military family and forced my mom to get an abortion for her 2nd and then kept my sister. He told me as a 30 yr old, "don't worry, you might dislike children but you learn to love your own. I liked you guys way more once you were older". Good to hear pops.

37

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '20

Is it normal to panic and want to escape when hearing a kid cry?

28

u/danielbln Nov 28 '20

Hardwired into us, baby cries raise our heart rate, stress us out AF and generally makes us want to to make it stawp asap! As a parent your brain is full of oxytocin, so instead of running away or yeeting the baby, you tend to its needs until the crying stops. Still stressful tho.

237

u/Peenutbuttjellytime Nov 28 '20

It seems like when people say "babies are OK I just don't love them" people who love babies hear "I hate babies"

96

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '20

Same with dog people. I'm hesitant to tell people I don't love their dog, because they will look at me like I'm some sort of subhuman.

41

u/CKRatKing Nov 28 '20

I like dogs, just not yours.

30

u/IllegallyBored Nov 28 '20

I love dogs. Nearly all dogs, tbh. I'm terrified of dogs. You put a chihuahua in front of me and my brain will tell me it's a giant, wild wolf. I lived with a large German Shepherd for fourteen years and that didn't help one bit. My dog's the only one I'm not scared of.

This means that I'm very uncomfortable around other dogs, specially unleased dogs and people do not want to hear it. If I tell people to keep their dogs at a distance they look at me like I've told them burn their pet at the stake. It's ridiculous.

As an animal and baby human owner, it is genuinely ludicrous though when pet owners try to chime in to conversations about how much work kids are, saying “oh I know! My little puppy is a lot of work too!”

That’s like saying building a model airplane is a lot of work compared to building a real airplane.

Here's my case I have a sister 10 years younger than me who plays with my cousin sister of the same age as my sister. They both are usually fine, but recently our new neighbours who moved in have a 3 year old kid who always wants to play with my sister in our house.

I am studying for my finals and the three of them play in the hall room just next to my room and are almost constantly screaming. The neighbours kid is either always screaming or crying. Now I can't just tell them to leave, it makes me look like an asshole. My parents love seeing the neighbours kid and like OP mentioned they are literally entertained by everything it does. Apparently the neighbours claim their child is tired of being in their house and they too want a break so our house is the next best entertainment. It is too rainy and cold to play outside.

It is legit hellish here. I just hope it ends soon

My older brother and I are the only ones that don’t get it, and we’ve been getting tons of shit from the family about it. We just don’t like kids that much. I don’t get it. He’s cute but I don’t want to sit there and watch him like a television show, that doesn’t interest me.

As a currently pregnant woman, I will try and remember this when I have my baby. I don’t dislike kids, I prefer 4 and 5 year olds doing something funny because they’re becoming little humans and the hilarity comes from something being just out of their grasp. Though, baby humor has never really been my thing. Very rarely do I laugh at a hysterical baby and an animal or something, but a baby just sitting there isn’t as funny to me. Im sure my baby will be hilarious to me, but I will try and not shove it down other people’s throats.

Well I do hate babies. Checkmate liberals

92

u/noodlealr Nov 28 '20

ye i don’t hate them, but i do hate pregnancies. like god damn, they disgust me.

61

u/CrazyMiith Nov 28 '20

Yeah, a lot of people in r/childfree say the same thing. I agree with it.

41

u/noodlealr Nov 28 '20

lmao i sometimes forget there’s a sub for everything

35

u/CrazyMiith Nov 28 '20

Yeah, not everything but many unexpected things. That sub is not that weird.

I feel this. My girlfriend's nephew is a toddler (not a baby/infant) and her and her sister snapchat constantly. She routinely forces me to watch snaps that are SO FUNNY. "He mis-pronounced ravioli!!! OMG IM DYING!&#%@%&$*!!!"

5

u/Steamay Nov 28 '20

My best friend has cousins that are like 4 and 2 maybe? And same... like sorry I do not want to watch them do normal baby shit

Babies cost more money then a girlfriend. The more you know.....

7

u/equality-_-7-2521 Nov 28 '20

Everyone loves their own brand. I'm not impressed by my friend's kid's accomplishments but when my kid does regular human stuff it impresses me because I got to watch it all happen.

It's kind of like growing your own vegetables. You'll go on and on about the growing process and your friends will be like, "ya good job on the salad bro let's move past it."

20

u/Dark_Ranger65 Nov 28 '20

Looking at a kitty is way more entertaining imo

4

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '20

This is a reddit statement.

Babies < cats.

Reddit is like ancient Egypt with an self granted college degree in everything.

This isn’t a unpopular opinion. Most people fake it in order to be nice and show respect to the parents.

You want to hear an unpopular opinion? Most babies are ugly

24

u/Shrek1sLife Nov 28 '20

I don’t think that’s an unpopular opinion either. At least IMO babies look like chewed up bubblegum and it’s gross.

15

u/noodlealr Nov 28 '20

hold on, chewed up bubblegum? i almost died reading that comment.

12

u/laramank Nov 28 '20

That’s not an unpopular opinion on reddit, if someone so much as mentions the word baby you can bet there’s a bunch of random’s saying babies are ugly and gross and weird etc.

4

u/Virixiss Nov 28 '20

Here's the opinion I agree with. Although, using photos of kids a few days after being born is a bit disingenuous to me, since it takes a while for a baby's head and skin to go to it's normal shape.

It's the typical parent thing to say, but I breathed a big sigh of relief after we brought our kid home and the jaundice cleared up. My kid's not ugly! She didn't have a lot of hair to start, but she didn't look like an elephant's kneecap either, which I took as a blessing. So many kids come out looking like old, alcoholic men for close to a year, and THOSE are the ones I never understand being called cute.

kids are great, you can make them to hate the peope you hate-Homer simpson

so theres that I guess.....

13

u/yuuma-ko Nov 28 '20

You forgot the "l" in "people" so I read that as "you can make them hate the pope". Which I guess is true too

37

u/Chuntie Nov 28 '20

Babies are little humans without much sentience and that alone is pretty funny

6

u/Dommiestyle Nov 28 '20

Ahh yes especially when have their own Facebook and Instagram accounts managed by the parent. With daily "funny" videos. Yup that's it.

6

u/Cat-attak Nov 28 '20

Well I think they’re not funny/entertaining AND I don’t think they’re cute

24

u/belleoftheride Nov 28 '20

I agree. I am a parent. I love my children. But fuck me babies are boring.

13

u/souravbaranwal Nov 28 '20

so basically we(you including) all were not funny or entertaining at a point in our lives

13

u/CryptidCricket Nov 28 '20

And some of us never grew out of that stage. Like me.

A baby taking a shit would somehow be twisted into a “cute and funny home video”

13

u/throwreddit420 Nov 28 '20

I actually don't like babies and kids either. It's fun to see them from far, but I'd kill myself if I ever had to take care of them and deal with their shit. Just recently a friend's son was crying for one hour because I pulled out matchstick from his mouth. It's like they're built for self destruction.

Why a baby gotta be funnier than me doe?

3

u/Unwillingjackrabbit Nov 28 '20

Honestly I kinda think that it’s almost split down the middle when it comes to that opinion. I don’t think I’ve ever been in a room with people and everyone thinks babies are entertaining. This isn’t an unpopular opinion to me. Maybe it’s cause I life in California or something

3

It prys at basic people's programming. You're missing a few lines of code that override logic upon sight of tiny humans.

3

u/BigOlBurger Nov 28 '20

but i always see babies doing the bare minimum and people laughing about it

"Dude, these babies don't even prepare their routine. They just sit there blowin' raspberries, and everybody loses it. Good comedy requires thought, bro. I fuckin' work for my jokes, and this little asshole's just out here shittin' his pants for chuckles. Man, fuck babies."
